The Trustees would like to thank all club members and the large number of volunteers who have helped to support our activities through the year, as well as the close partnerships that have continued, including those with Dartmoor Multi Academy Trust (Tavistock College), Lions of Tavistock, Mount Kelly, as well as West Devon Borough Council, Tavistock Town Council and the Armada Network.
In particular, we would like to acknowledge the contribution and many hours of dedicated hard work from all of our coaches and run leaders, as well as the excellent leadership of our Chair, Alistair Kinsey, and support from long-term Club Secretary, Sally Lipscombe (both who will be standing down).
Mark West has been elected as the new Chair, and will be supported by the existing Trustees, and a new Club Secretary, Carole Walters.
Despite reducing membership fees, the turnover of the Club increased, with the small surplus being transferred across into our reserves to support what is expected to be a big year in 2024, with the refurbishment of the main athletics track a priority, following a fire causing damage to the facilities earlier in the year.
The Club successfully organised a number of high-profile events, including our monthly Tavy 5k, Tavy 7, Tavy Relays and Tavy 13 (Half Marathon) which also incorporated our biggest ever Primary Schools Challenge.
Next year, due to the track refurbishment, we will be putting on hold the Tavy 13, but would very much like to host a Devon Open Competition towards the end of the summer.
The Club is fortunate to have an excellent reputation for supporting field events, in particular coaching for throws and jumps, and the year saw a number of outstanding results from junior athletes in this area.
We continue to see a significant number of enquiries for new members, with a fantastic range of ages and backgrounds, from primary school age right through to aspiring athletes in their 70s. The Club will continue to be proactive in supporting a regular Couch to 5k pathway for those interested in starting or returning to running.
Perhaps the biggest milestone of the year, was the Club taking ownership of the lease for the main track and field facilities, providing us with a 25-year lease for continued sporting activity, and providing a stable basis from which to work with funders and public sector agencies over the coming years.
Refurbishment of the track is scheduled to start in March 2024 for a period of 6-8 week, with the Club looking to move coaching elsewhere in the interim period, before celebrating the re-opening of facilities in late April or May.
For the longer-term, the Club would very much like to continue to raise funds and invest in facilities, so that a proper gym, toilets and Club House can be developed on-site adjacent to the track. These plans are at the centre of implementing the principles from
Sport England’s 10-year plan, - Recover and reinvent, connecting communities, Positive experiences for children and young people, Connecting with health and well-being, active environments.”
