Cylch Meithrin Ysgol Glan Morfa Annual Report 2021/22

Good evening everyone. I am proud to be able to report back on Cylch Meithrin Ysgol Glan Morfa’s third full year of operation, a year of consolidation and growth for our Charity.

I am delighted to report that by January we should be at full capacity, in terms of the numbers that the Care Inspectorate Wales permit us to host at our base in Ysgol Glan Morfa. This means 16 children in the morning and sixteen in the afternoon, and a staff consort of four full time workers to look after them.

Our Leader Bethan has been our rock over the past year and clearly the Cylch she organises with her team is appealing to parents in the local area. She provides some lovely feedback further down.

Lleucu also has moved on from apprentice to full time employee: she continues to study on her Childcare course and we are proud of her development over the past twelve months. What a great story for our Cylch her development from parent to volunteer to apprentice to employee is.

In terms of the Staff we were sad to bid farewell to one of our “Founding Sisters,” Wendy Roberts, who has moved on to work at another local Cylch. Wendy’s passion and commitment to the children, allied to Bethan’s peerless organisation and leadership were critical to building our reputation amongst parents in our early days and she will always be part of our organisation’s story. We were however extremely lucky to recruit Shanade Dibble to replace Wendy as Cylch Assistant, she has fitted in brilliantly since joining around Easter time, and is taking Welsh lessons to improve that skill set. We were also delighted to recruit another Cylch parent, Kiran Kaur as our 121 Assistant, and she has recently been confirmed on full time terms.

My team of Trustees, namely Sian Regan, Tessa McBride and Keeron Stone, plus Rory McBride who has helped us as a Committee Member have worked tirelessly, and for nothing all year. They have helped to pull down grant schemes, covered a complicated payroll arrangement and even helped out as volunteers when needed. We have a great camaraderie and mutual support for each other at stressful moments which is crucial for any organisation. I salute these four and am delighted to propose to you the appointment of Rory McBride plus Aled Phillips– both parents at the Cylch, as Trustees - who will further strengthen our team.

During the year we passed a Care Inspectorate Wales inspection and have improved some our Management processes, such as organising regular supervision sessions and updating our policies on their recommendation.

We benefit from, and to an extent are insulated by a fantastic arrangement from the School who provide us the space rent and utilities costs free, and a dedicated support worker in Miss Maguire. Bethan has reported to me how the School’s support has been crucial and we thank Mr Thomas and his Staff for their continued support.

We thank and appreciate the support of our funders. Cardiff City Council’s 30 Hour Childcare scheme is an absolute godsend for us. The funding comes directly to us and allows us to plan ahead, and increase staff number where needed. We have also enjoyed the reassuring support of Mudiad Meithrin throughout the year.

Our financial situation, as you will see from our accounts, is stable not to say healthy. We have built up reserves as a responsible Charity should, and I am delighted to say that we recently agreed to become a Living Wage Employer, meaning pay rises for all our Staff, to help on a difficult winter. As a parent the notion that childcare should be a poorly paid career has always stunned, not to say

appalled me and I hope we can play our part to buck that trend. Our brilliant staff certainly deserve no less.

Finally we welcome anyone who would like to join us on the committee moving forward –the opportunity to put on social events has returned so please do speak to us afterwards if you are interested in getting involved.

Thanks once again to everyone involved in Cylch Meithrin Ysgol Glan Morfa, I am truly honoured and humbled to Chair this wonderful organisation.

Thomas Crockett
