existing practices regarding poverty
providing a platform for the community to
address important moral & social issues &
focus academic attention and intelligence
upon them.
We have five key objectives:
1. Build a diverse network of
academics, and provide a platform
for them to connect with each
other.
2. Support our networks in developing
a multi-disciplinary evidence base
in relation to poverty, inequality
and human flourishing that can be
used for policy-making.

-
Equip our network of academics with the tools and skills to engage effectively with policy- makers and the media.
-
Connect policy-makers with our academic network, both to provide them with a better understanding of the existing research and to link up research with their needs and objectives.
-
Widen the public discourse around poverty, inequality and flourishing society, to enable the public to hold policy-makers to account for the implications of policy decisions.

Over three sessions ASAP UK hosted an
event on Addressing Poverty After the
Pandemic: challenges and solutions
This session debated some of the biggest
issues emerging from the COVID-19
pandemic.
Over the last 12 months we have seen a
radical change in income and job security
in the UK. Not only have we been
encouraged to rethink who are “key
workers” but many citizens have had to
live on 80% income and unable to work for

extended periods of time. Labour market
disruption, job insecurity and economic
recession may be the post pandemic
context in which we have to address
poverty.
This session brings together three
panellists to explore the current levels of
poverty in the UK with recently published
research from the Joseph Rowntree
Foundation and a discussion regarding
Universal Credit and the social security
system. The aim is to encourage discussion
about the policies we need to tackle
poverty as the UK emerges out of the
pandemic.
Panellists:
Professor Jane Millar – University of Bath
Dr Emma Wincup – Joseph Rowntree
Foundation
Dr Daniel Edmiston - University of Leeds
To follow on from this year's Climate
Conference COP26 in Glasgow ASAP hosted
a panel event on:
The Climate Crisis and Children's
Lives: Poverty, Health, and Child
Rights
We had three panellists to speak on the
topics that have arisen at COP26 in line
with their specialisms and the outcome for
children:
Professor Sir Michael Marmot, University
College London - Child Health, Inequality
and Poverty
Dr Francis Vergunst, University of Montreal
- Climate Change and Children's Mental
Health
Dr Thomas Bundschuh, Sheffield Hallam
University - The Climate Crisis and
Children's Rights
Our panellists explored how the climate
crisis reveals and exacerbates existing
poverty and health inequalities, how it
affects children's development and mental
health and how these climate harms have
created a child's rights crisis.
We ran this event as the start of a series of
events with academics and stakeholders
working together to campaign on behalf of
children. In this context, we are also
planning a special issue of the Journal
ASAP.
During this period ASAP UK also expanded
