FROM THE FOUNDER AND CEO FOR THE YEAR ENDED 31 MAY 2021

2020/2021hasbeenadifficultyearforallcharitiesandVeterans'Growthisnoexception.Ourfocushasbeenon
usingsuchresourcesaswereavailabletoustofindnewwaystoreachandhelpveterans,whileworkingwithinthe
limitationsimposed by the COVID-19 pandemic.
Onenotableimpactofthepandemicwasthatveteranswerereluctanttoreachout,withmanystrugglingtoadapt
toonlineformsofcommunicationsuchasZoomandTeams.Isolationandlackofsocialisationwerekeyissues,
affectingboth veterans themselves and their loved ones. For some, a lack of work meant significant economic hardship
too.
Iamproudthatasanorganisationwewereabletohelpmanyveteransto"heatandeat",providingfoodparcels
andsupport with heating costs during this period. We have secured funding to enable us to do the same from January
2022.
Despitethesechallenges,theVeterans'Growthteamremainedatthecoalface.ThesitewasmadeasCOVIDsecure
aspossibleandwecontinuedtodeliverasmuchface-to-facesupportasthesituationallowed,workingbothwith
groupsandone-to-onewithindividualserviceusers.Wealsoworkedonlinewithgroupsandindividualsunableto
travel.I amhappy to report that not one veteran was referred to another organisation due to us being unable to help in
some way.
Thesitehascontinuedtoexpandatpace.Thingsarealwayschanging,anditcanbedifficulttorememberthestate
thesitewasinwhenwefirstarrived.Weareworkingconstantlytoimprovethefacilities,andtherearemore
changesplanned for the winter of 2021/22.
Ourworkforcehasgrownovertheyear,too.Duetothenumberofreferralsreceivedfromotheragenciesand
theconsequentriseinnumbers,wenowhavefourpart-timemembersofstaff:twoqualifiedsocial
therapeutichorticulturists, one trainee social therapeutic horticulturist and a farmhand.
Therehavebeenchangestothemake-upoftheboardoftrusteesoverthelastyear,ascanbeseenonthe
CharityCommissionwebsite.IlookforwardtoworkingwithournewboardmemberstoensurethatVeterans'Growth
continuesto expand and to support as many veterans as possible for years to come.
Fundingwasinshortsupplythroughouttheyear,butweneverthelessgainedinsomeareasandcontinuedto
pushforwardwithourplans.Ourresidentialprojecthasbeenparticularlyhardhitbythelackoffundraisingactivitybut
we arenowabletoofferaone-bedroomhouseeitherasaccommodationforveteransattendingcoursesandtheir
families,or foruseasrespite.Assoonasfundraisingcanbegininearnestandgrantsstarttobecomeavailablefor
thissortof projectwewillbepushinghardtogainthefundsweneedtotakeourplansforward.Havingcompleteda
firewalk,a superherorunandtheLondonMarathonthisyear,Iplantotakeabackseatin2022butIwillcontinue
tosupporteveryone thatgives their time and effort to raise funds for this great charity.
AsCEOIamproudofeverythingthathasbeenachievedbyoursmallteaminthelastyear.Itisreallyhearteningto
seethechangeintheveteransweworkwith,andtohearfromtheirfriendsandfamilythedifferencetheyseetoo.
I amconstantlymonitoringthecostsinvolvedinrunningthecharitytoeliminateunnecessaryexpenditureand
ensure thateverything we do spend is delivering maximum impact.
IamdelightedtoreportthatwewerenamedNHSSouthEastMentalHealthCharityoftheyearandthatwehave
nowsignedtheArmedForcesCovenant.Iamexcitedaboutthefutureandaboutourplansfor2021/22,andIfeel
confidentthatwhatwedowillcontinuetohaveapositiveimpactonourveterans.Tofindoutmoreaboutourplans
andkeep uptodatewithourprogress,pleasefollowoursocialmediaaccounts.Inthemeantime,thepicturesbelow
giveaflavour ofwhat's been going on at Veterans' Growth this year.

applicabletocharitiespreparingtheiraccountsinaccordancewiththeFinancialReportingStandardapplicableinthe UK
and Republic of Ireland (FRS 102) (effective 1 January 2019).

OBJECTIVES AND ACTIVITIES

Objectives and aims

Our Aim

Topreserveandprotectthementalhealthandtorelievetheneedsofmilitaryveterans,primarily,butnot exclusively,
through the provision of social therapeutic horticulture (STH).

Our Vision

Wewanteveryveteranfromthetri-servicethathassufferedorissufferingwithmentalhealthissuestohaveaccess to
STH and outdoor working, and to receive the best support and outstanding development opportunities.

Our Objectives

1. To provide STH to veterans from the tri-service in accordance with individual needs, and to refer on to specialist

organisations where appropriate.

2. To make this support available to the many organisations that cannot provide STH themselves.

3. To provide opportunities for further horticultural training and/or employment in the industry.

should undertake.

FINANCIAL REVIEW

Financial position

Theaccountshavebeenpreparedinaccordancewiththeaccountingpoliciessetoutinnote1totheaccounts and
complywiththecharity'sgoverningdocument,theCharitiesAct2011andtheStatementofRecommended Practice
applicabletocharitiespreparingtheiraccountsinaccordancewiththeFinancialReportingStandardapplicableinthe UK
and Republic of Ireland (FRS102) published on 16 July 2014.
Financiallytheorganisationisinreasonablehealth,butthereisaneedtoincreasetheleveloffinancialreservesheld. In
accordance with the guidance set out by the Charity Commission, the reserves are held in order to:
Forthesepurposesthetrusteesaimtoholdmoniesequivalenttosevenmonths'averageexpenditure,overalland within
eachofthecharity'sprojects.Thetrusteeswillallocateorretainmoniesforeachoftheprojectstoachievethislevel as
funds become available. The trustees will review the actual reserves level annually and reallocate funds accordingly.

Principal funding sources

TheprincipalsourcesofincomehavebeengrantsawardedtousbytheArmedForcesCovenantFundTrustand The
NationalLottery.SmallergrantshavecomefromTheLennoxHenryTrust,TheGreenhallFoundation,TheChalk Hill
Trust,ArnoldClark,PremierPolytunnelsLtdandTheSussexFoundation.Thesesourcesofincomehavemostly been
restricted,mostdonotcoveranywagesandhavebeenusedtomeettheobjectiveofprovidingSTHtoveteransfrom the
tri-service.
Wealsorelyonmanyvolunteersandfundraiserstoprovidedonationstothecharityandarrangefundraisingevents. The
income is recognised by Veterans' Growth and thank you letters or social media mentions are actioned ASAP.

FUTURE PLANS

The charity has identified the following key targets for the coming year:

STRUCTURE, GOVERNANCE AND MANAGEMENT

Governing document

Thecharityiscontrolledbyitsgoverningdocument,aconstitutionandconstitutesaCharitable Incorporated
Organisation.

Recruitment and appointment of new trustees

Veterans’Growthhasaformaltrusteerecruitmentpolicyandprocess.Newtrusteepositionscanbeadvertised by
Veterans’Growthornominationsfromthemanagementteamandtheexistingtrusteescanbeput forward.
Appointmentswilltakeintoaccountanyspecialistskillsneededbythecharity.Thosenominatedandappointed are
formally elected at the first AGM following appointment.

Organisation and key responsibilities

Thecharityisadministeredbynofewerthanthreetrustees.Thecommitteemeetsatleastthreetimesduringthe year,
either face-to-face or via video link. Two trustees must be present for a decision to be made.
TofacilitateeffectiverunningofVeterans'Growththeseniormanagementteamhasdelegatedauthority,within the
termsapprovedbythetrustees,foroperationalmattersincludingfinanceandemployment.Themanagementteam keeps
the trustees abreast of developments verbally and via email.
Theremunerationoftheseniorofficialsofthecharityisdecidedandagreedunanimouslybytheboardof trustees.
Remunerationwillreflecttheindividual'slevelofserviceanddedication,aswellasthecontributiontheymake to
promoting the objectives of the charity as outlined in this report.

STRUCTURE, GOVERNANCE AND MANAGEMENT

Induction and training of new trustees

Trusteesareencouragedtoattendappropriateexternaltrainingeventswherethesewillfacilitatetheundertakingof their
role.
Newtrusteesattendanorientationmeetingtobriefthemontheirlegalobligationsundercharityandcompanylaw, the
contentoftheMemorandumandArticlesofAssociation,thevariouscommitteesanddecision-makingprocesses, the
financialplanandrecentfinancialperformanceofthecharity.Duringthisinitialorientationprogrammetheymeet key
employees and other trustees.

Risk management

Thetrusteeshaveassessedthemajorriskstowhichthecharityisexposedandaresatisfiedthatsystemsareinplace to
mitigate exposure. The review process comprises:
-ongoing review of the risks the charity may face
-establishmentofsystemsandprocedurestomitigatetherisksidentified,andtheimplementationof procedures
designed to minimise the potential impact on the charity should those risks materialise.

1. STATUTORY INFORMATION

Veterans'Growthisacharitableincorporatedorganisation,registeredinEnglandandWales.The charity's
registered number and principle address can be found in the Report of the Trustees.

2. ACCOUNTING POLICIES

Basis of preparing the financial statements

The financial statements of the charity, which is a public benefit entity under FRS 102, have been prepared in accordance with the Charities SORP (FRS 102) 'Accounting and Reporting by Charities: Statement of Recommended Practice applicable to charities preparing their accounts in accordance with the Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland (FRS 102) (effective 1 January 2019)', Financial Reporting Standard 102 'The Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland' and the Charities Act 2011. The financial statements have been prepared under the historical cost convention.

Inpreparingthefinancialstatements,thetrusteesarerequiredtomakeanassessmentoftheabilityof
thecharitytocontinueasagoingconcern.Thetrusteeshavepreparedacashflowforecastandbudgets
for thecharityandagainstthebackdropoftheCOVID-19Pandemica"reversestress"testhasbeen
appliedto theforecasts,seekingtoestablishthelevelofliquidityheadroomthecharityisexpectedtohave
duringthe12 monthgoing concern period.
Onthebasisoftheseforecastsandthefactthatthecharityhassubstantialnetcurrentassetsandnetassets,
thetrusteesareconfidentthatthecharityhasadequateresourcestocontinueinoperationalexistenceandto
meetitsliabilitiesastheyfallduefortheforeseeablefuture.Asaresultoftheabove,thetrusteeshave
concluded thatit remains appropriate to adopt a going concern basis of preparation in these financial
statements.

Income

AllincomeisrecognisedintheStatementofFinancialActivitiesoncethecharityhasentitlementtothefunds,
isprobable that the income will be received and the amount can be measured reliably.

Expenditure

Liabilitiesarerecognisedasexpenditureassoonasthereisalegalorconstructiveobligationcommitting
thecharitytothatexpenditure,itisprobablethatatransferofeconomicbenefitswillberequiredin
settlement andtheamountoftheobligationcanbemeasuredreliably.Expenditureisaccountedforonan
accrualsbasisand hasbeenclassifiedunderheadingsthataggregateallcostrelatedtothecategory.
Wherecostscannotbe directlyattributedtoparticularheadingstheyhavebeenallocatedtoactivitieson
abasisconsistentwiththeuse ofresources.

Taxation

The charity is exempt from tax on its charitable activities.

Fund accounting

Unrestricted funds can be used in accordance with the charitable objectives at the discretion of the trustees.
Restrictedfundscanonlybeusedforparticularrestrictedpurposeswithintheobjectsofthecharity.
Restrictionsarise when specified by the donor or when funds are raised for particular restricted purposes.
