2020/2021hasbeenadifficultyearforallcharitiesandVeterans'Growthisnoexception.Ourfocushasbeenon
usingsuchresourcesaswereavailabletoustofindnewwaystoreachandhelpveterans,whileworkingwithinthe
limitationsimposed by the COVID-19 pandemic.
```

Onenotableimpactofthepandemicwasthatveteranswerereluctanttoreachout,withmanystrugglingtoadapt
toonlineformsofcommunicationsuchasZoomandTeams.Isolationandlackofsocialisationwerekeyissues,
affectingboth veterans themselves and their loved ones. For some, a lack of work meant significant economic hardship
too.
```

Iamproudthatasanorganisationwewereabletohelpmanyveteransto"heatandeat",providingfoodparcels
andsupport with heating costs during this period. We have secured funding to enable us to do the same from January
2022.
```

Despitethesechallenges,theVeterans'Growthteamremainedatthecoalface.ThesitewasmadeasCOVIDsecure
aspossibleandwecontinuedtodeliverasmuchface-to-facesupportasthesituationallowed,workingbothwith
groupsandone-to-onewithindividualserviceusers.Wealsoworkedonlinewithgroupsandindividualsunableto
travel.I amhappy to report that not one veteran was referred to another organisation due to us being unable to help in
some way.
```

Thesitehascontinuedtoexpandatpace.Thingsarealwayschanging,anditcanbedifficulttorememberthestate
thesitewasinwhenwefirstarrived.Weareworkingconstantlytoimprovethefacilities,andtherearemore
changesplanned for the winter of 2021/22.
```

Ourworkforcehasgrownovertheyear,too.Duetothenumberofreferralsreceivedfromotheragenciesand
theconsequentriseinnumbers,wenowhavefourpart-timemembersofstaff:twoqualifiedsocial
therapeutichorticulturists, one trainee social therapeutic horticulturist and a farmhand.
```

Therehavebeenchangestothemake-upoftheboardoftrusteesoverthelastyear,ascanbeseenonthe
CharityCommissionwebsite.IlookforwardtoworkingwithournewboardmemberstoensurethatVeterans'Growth
continuesto expand and to support as many veterans as possible for years to come.
```

Fundingwasinshortsupplythroughouttheyear,butweneverthelessgainedinsomeareasandcontinuedto
pushforwardwithourplans.Ourresidentialprojecthasbeenparticularlyhardhitbythelackoffundraisingactivitybut
we arenowabletoofferaone-bedroomhouseeitherasaccommodationforveteransattendingcoursesandtheir
families,or foruseasrespite.Assoonasfundraisingcanbegininearnestandgrantsstarttobecomeavailablefor
thissortof projectwewillbepushinghardtogainthefundsweneedtotakeourplansforward.Havingcompleteda
firewalk,a superherorunandtheLondonMarathonthisyear,Iplantotakeabackseatin2022butIwillcontinue
tosupporteveryone thatgives their time and effort to raise funds for this great charity.

AsCEOIamproudofeverythingthathasbeenachievedbyoursmallteaminthelastyear.Itisreallyhearteningto
seethechangeintheveteransweworkwith,andtohearfromtheirfriendsandfamilythedifferencetheyseetoo.
I amconstantlymonitoringthecostsinvolvedinrunningthecharitytoeliminateunnecessaryexpenditureand
ensure thateverything we do spend is delivering maximum impact.

IamdelightedtoreportthatwewerenamedNHSSouthEastMentalHealthCharityoftheyearandthatwehave
nowsignedtheArmedForcesCovenant.Iamexcitedaboutthefutureandaboutourplansfor2021/22,andIfeel
confidentthatwhatwedowillcontinuetohaveapositiveimpactonourveterans.Tofindoutmoreaboutourplans

contact Veterans’ Growth direct.

## `Q: How many employed members of staff do you have?` 

- `A: At present we have four part-time members of staff. Remuneration will always be considered carefully in the context of the contribution the individual can make to the goals of the charity.` 

## `Q: How much money did the charity make this year?`

A:Thecharityhasbroughtinincomeofaround£240,000thisyear.Around83%ofthisismadeupofrestricted funds
which must be used for specific purposes and within a set timeframe.
```

## `Q: How much do you have in reserves?` 

- `A: The charity is still in its infancy and does not have sizable reserves. Currently, our unrestricted reserves stand at around £45,000. We will look to build this up in order to make sure Veterans' Growth is on a sustainable financial footing.` 

## `Q: How many veterans did you help during the COVID-19 pandemic?` 

- `A: We provided assistance worth over £6,000 in food and heating allowances to more than 100 veterans, sent out over 70 grow-and-sow-along parcels, provided seeds to a huge number of veteran allotment-holder (both groups and individuals) around the country and worked face-to-face with more than 60 veterans.`

The main achievements of Veterans' Growth during 2020/21 were as follows:

- `Enhanced the accessibility of the site by installing 300m2 of patio, a concrete ramp and veg pods - accessible raised` 

- `beds for veg growing.` 

- `Created a safe, sheltered area where veterans and their families can work if the weather is unkind.` 

- `Provided food parcels using produce grown by those veterans who were able to attend the site during the pandemic.` 

- `Provided direct support to veterans with heating or food during the winter of 2020/21.` 

- `Continued to expand the site with the support and assistance of veterans and volunteers.` 

- `Organised and held courses for families including in flower arranging, planting hanging baskets, etc.` 

- `Successfully applied for many small grants which were used to reduce suffering in the veteran community though the` 

- `hardships of the pandemic.`

applicabletocharitiespreparingtheiraccountsinaccordancewiththeFinancialReportingStandardapplicableinthe UK

accordance with the guidance set out by the Charity Commission, the reserves are held in order to:

- `provide some capacity to launch new projects.`

## **2. ACCOUNTING POLICIES** 

## **Basis of preparing the financial statements** 

The financial statements of the charity, which is a public `benefit entity under FRS 102, have been prepared in accordance with the Charities SORP (FRS 102) 'Accounting and Reporting by Charities: Statement of Recommended Practice applicable to charities preparing their accounts in accordance with the Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland (FRS 102) (effective 1 January 2019)', Financial Reporting Standard 102 'The Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland' and the Charities Act 2011. The financial statements have been prepared under the historical cost convention.`
