From 1.04.2020 Period start date To 31.03.2021 Period end date

Charity name: Jarjeer Mule and Donkey Trust

Charity registration number: 1183446

Objectives and Activities

SORP reference
Summary of the purposes of
the charity as set out in its
governing document
Para 1.17 For the public benefit to relieve the
suffering of working animals in need of
care and attention by reason of sickness,
maltreatment, poor circumstances or ill
usage, and to educate the public in
matters of animal welfare by providing
grants to organisations, and in particular
to The Jarjeer Mule and Donkey Refuge.
Summary of the main
activities in relation to those
purposes for the public
benefit, in particular, the
activities, projects or services
identified in the accounts.
Para 1.17 and
1.19
Donations have been received and grants
made to Jarjeer Mule and Donkey Refuge
and to Maroc a Cheval to carry out animal
welfare needs throughout Morocco.
The main promotional work, including
videos, has been through social media.
Leaflets have also been regularly
distributed including a dedicated QR
code.
Sufficient funds have been raised to
facilitate the building of specialist stables
for horses brought back from the point of
near death through starvation during the
pandemic when the tourist industry in
Morocco collapsed. Six stallions and a
mare have now retired to the Jarjeer
Refuge.
The clinic that we helped finance last
year now offers emergency treatment for
equines in the community. We have
continued to provide medication and
protective clothing.
Statement confirming
whether the trustees have
had regard to the guidance
issued by the Charity
Commission on public
benefit
Para 1.18 The Trustees have had regard to the
guidance issued by the Charity
Commission. We are satisfied that this
requirement has been met in terms of
relief to abandoned animals and poor
families (who form a substantial sector of
the population as a whole) who could not

afford to keep their animals during the pandemic.

Achievements and Performance

SORP reference
Summary of the main
achievements of the charity,
identifying the difference the
charity’s work has made to
the circumstances of its
beneficiaries and any wider
benefits to society as a
whole.
Para 1.20 We are satisfied that our achievements
this year have made a substantial
difference for working animals in
Morocco, many whose lives have been
saved from starvation resulting in a
painful death but also to the wider public
as a whole who have avoided the public
health risk of equine corpses being left to
rot in public areas.
Review of the work we have supported in
Morocco shows very clearly that the
efforts of the organisations we support
have made a difference both in terms of
cruelty awareness and a willingness to
change in terms of the treatment of
working animals. We had monthly reports
from Jarjeer Mule and Donkey Refuge
who, in turn have been helping other
smaller charities in Morocco during
lockdown. We are satisfied that
admissions to the Refuge has doubled
during this last year as many donkeys
have been abandoned, some of them in a
very poor state. Sadly there have been
several deaths due to old-age or such
serious injuries that the vet has had to

intervene. The Refuge has also provided services to many Caleche horses in Marrakech who were starving as a result of the absence of tourists and owners loss of income. The Refuge continues to take mules and donkeys from various parts of the country such as Casablanca, Rabat, Tangier and south of Agadir. They undertake a considerable amount of outreach work and advise owners in surrounding area. Calls for assistance from Moroccans is increasing.
