Objectives and Activities
| SORP reference | ||
|---|---|---|
Summary of the purposes of the charity as set out in its governing document
Para 1.17 | To provide Islamic education for the benefit of the public through the provision of classes, lectures and teachings on the Islamic faith to enlighten Muslims and others about the Islamic religion. To promote social inclusion for the public benefit by preventing people from becoming socially excluded, relieving the needs of those people who are socially excluded and assisting them to integrate into society. Note: ‘Socially excluded’ means being excluded from society, or part of society, as a result of one or more factors including: financial hardship, old age, ill health (physical or mental), family breakdown or being a member of a socially and economically deprived community. |
Summary of the main activities in relation to those purposes for the public benefit, in particular, the activities, projects or services identified in the accounts.
Para 1.17 and 1.19 |
In light of the purposes of the Charity as set out in its governing document, its main activities are the provision of interactive classroom/online sessions focused on Islamic knowledge, teachings & the various schools of thought. These include Quran lessons, translation, hadith & further studies, self-improvement exercises, use of audio & visuals, various classroom activities & games, group sessions, educational trips, quizzes and Q&A sessions. Those who wish to attend the workshops/classes but require financial support, are assisted by the Charity by |
providing discounted subscriptions and deferred payment schemes. The Charity also sells books and educational material (e.g., course folders & notes) to students and the public. The Charity holds occasional fundraising events to generate and increase public awareness of the Charity and its aims, and to be able to raise funds in order to carry out its objectives. The Charity also provides physical and emotional support to the less fortunate/socially excluded, including elderly people and the terminally ill, aiming to improve their quality of life. This includes but is not limited to, assistance in day-to-day social and domestic activities. During the national lockdown due to the Covid-19 pandemic commencing March 2020, the Charity increased its efforts and provided, where possible, small scale shopping assistance and food services to those identified as self- isolating and those affected by COVID- 19.

Achievements and Performance
| SORP reference | ||
|---|---|---|
Summary of the main achievements of the charity, identifying the difference the charity’s work has made to the circumstances of its beneficiaries and any wider benefits to society as a whole.
Para 1.20 | The Charity has grown in size via its classroom/workshop-based activities. It currently enrols approximately 50 students to its weekly courses which covers not only the translation of the Quran and understanding of its meaning via interactive learning sessions, but by also encouraging the implementation of the positive message of the Quran in daily life. The educational classes held by the Charity have made a small yet significant difference to the beneficiaries of the classes by delivering information and improving knowledge on the religion of Islam as well as bettering one’s character, the importance of social work and helping others in need. The classes also bring together people who otherwise find themselves alone in times of need. For example, during times of hardship and sickness, our students have found support and comfort with fellow students, as well as |
domestic help and assistance with daily needs. The Charity moved to a bigger classroom venue in March 2020. The new premises were hired to accommodate the growing student base and their needs, and to provide a better learning experience and higher quality of teaching. The bigger classroom overall provided better educational standards to all students and assistants involved. However, due to Covid-19 and the subsequent national lockdown announced just a few weeks later, all classes and activities were subsequently conducted online (via Zoom) to enable the Charity to continue fulfilling its objectives. The fundraising activities and event held by the Charity, before the national lockdown was announced, were successful in the aim of creating awareness for the Charity and raising funds for its purpose. The growing student base reflects this.

Financial Review
Review of the charity’s financial position at the end of the period
Para 1.21 | The main sources of income/donations for the Charity are via voluntary donations and student/classroom subscriptions. |
|---|---|---|
In the period to 31st August 2020, the
---
Charity is grateful to have received a
total of £19k in gross income/donations.
Total costs incurred were £15k, giving a
net position at the end of the period of
£4k.
The main source of donations/income
came from the following:
• Classroom Activities/Student
Subscriptions £8k
• Voluntary receipts/donations £7k
• Receipts from Charitable
Activities £4k
• TOTAL £19k
Costs were incurred for the following:
• Classroom hire/rent £11k
• General costs £1k
• Teacher fees £1k
• Printing, postage, supplies £1k
• Other £1k
• TOTAL £15k
The higher costs this financial year were
mainly attributed to the cost of renting a
classroom to be able to provide a better
educational experience to the growing
student base. The contract for a new and
bigger classroom was agreed and
signed in early March 2020.
Although these new premises benefitted
the Charity’s objectives and student
experience, unfortunately, the Charity
was unable to make full use of the
classroom and its facilities due to the
announcement of the national lockdown
just weeks after agreeing the contract
and its terms. This meant that the
Charity incurred a significant financial
cost from the unoccupied rental space.
The Trustees have been negotiating with
the landlord. However, this cost is
expected to remain in place until the end
of the contract in Feb 2021. The Trustees
have however, managed to obtain a
decreased rental fee for the remainder of
the classroom lease, decreasing the
rental obligations from £1250pcm to
£900pcm. These revised payments
commenced in Aug-20, and will continue
until the contract end.
This higher cost base, along with the
inability raise funds via live/in-person
events and goods sales, inevitably had a
net impact on the financial position at the year-end. The Trustees are seeking to review the cost base of the Charity with the aim of reducing it further.

Policies and procedures adopted for the induction and training of trustees
Para 1.51 | A Safeguarding Policy and associated Officer have been in place since Feb 2019. Safeguarding Policies are reviewed every 3 months or as required by the Charity’s Safeguarding Officer. A Protection Policy has been in place since June 2019. In March 2020, when Covid-19 was declared a pandemic by The World Health Organization, the Charity’s Trustees and volunteers took immediate action to protect all those using its facilities including its Trustees, volunteers, and students. On 8th March, the Charity had in place clear instructions (in the form of a poster), on careful conduct, personal hygiene, due diligence and how to protect oneself & others. The poster was placed in clear view for all upon entering the classroom. The poster included the “Catch it, Bin it, Kill it” advise as well as instructing all attendees to wash their hands for 20 seconds and/or to use hand sanitiser. With the rise of Covid infections, the Trustees decided to close the classroom on 16th March, due to concerns for the safety and wellbeing of its volunteers and students, acting slightly ahead of Government advise. The primary justification for this action was to ensure the safety for all volunteers and students, the vast majority of which are over the age of 60 and use public transport. |
The teaching site remained closed for 4 months until the easing of lockdown restrictions in the England. During this time, all classes continued as usual but via various internet platforms & E- learning and no disruption was caused to students’ education. Prior to reopening onsite classes, a deep clean of the classroom was carried out, arrangements made to allow for at least 1 metre spacing between desks, restricting the number of people allowed to enter the classroom, and new guidelines for all visitors (including Trustees, volunteers and students). The guidelines included that issued by the Government on Covid-19 symptoms and management, and temperature checks of individuals entering the classroom, the provision of and requiring visitors to use hand sanitiser provided at the reception desk before entering the classroom, and for all visitors wear face masks. The Charity ensured that all desks and chairs of the classroom were cleaned using antibacterial cleaner daily by the first arriving volunteer. A full inspection of the premises was conducted by the Charity’s Safeguarding Officer on 21[st] July 2020 prior to reopening the classroom to students/visitors. The classroom by reopened by the Trustees, albeit with a limited number of seating available. Students who were able to easily and safely attend classes in person were permitted to do so, while others were encouraged to continue distant/online learning/attendance.
