Tring Lions Club was originally formed in 1973, and became a Charitable Incorporated Organisation in December 2018. Throughout this accounting period the Club has had a membership of 16 individuals. Tring Lions Club CIO carried out a number of fundraising activities in order to raise funds from the public. In conjunction with a number of other Lions Clubs in the area, we operated a second hand Bookshop in the Marlowes shopping centre in Hemel Hempstead. During this accounting year this was once again the main source of income.
Happily COVID restrictions from the beginning of the accounting period were gradually being eased, and this meant that the Bookshop was open more often than it had been in the previous accounting period. This accounted for the fact that the income from the Bookshop achieved £8985 for this accounting period, as opposed to £3242 for the previous year. The Club also benefitted from some Central and Local Government grants because the Bookshop had been closed because of earlier Government COVID restrictions and these are shown separately in the Accounts.
We were once again able to hold our monthly Business meetings face to face from August 2021 instead of online via Zoom. We were also able to resume many of our fundraising activities, having a fundraising stall at Tring Summer Festival in August 2021 and running a Car Boot Sale in September 2021.
Summary of the main activities undertaken for the public benefit in relation to these objects (include within this section the statutory declaration that trustees have had regard to the guidance issued by the Charity Commission on public benefit)
We also managed to hold our Chocolate Father Christmas and Chocolate Easter Bunny raffles as before which raised funds from the public of £795 in total for this accounting period. We held two online Quizzes during the year which invited Donations from those participating. This raised a total of £517. We also continued to sell some donated books and other donated items online through e-Bay. This brought in funds of £424 during this accounting period.
We were able to hold our annual Carol Concert in the Forge Car Park, Tring for the first time since 2019. However some Government COVID restrictions were in place, which coupled with the appalling weather on Christmas Eve meant that the amount raised was limited this year to £335. The Club topped up this amount from club funds and this allowed us to make a donation of £500 in January 2022 to the Pepper Foundation a Charity supporting families and children’s Hospice care at home.
During the accounting period we made a total of 32 separate donations to local, national and International charities and local good causes of varying amounts ranging from £90 to one that was of a value of £2000.
All of the Clubs for the elderly people of Tring and Berkhamsted that members of our club normally supported and provide transport or minibus escorts for, were cancelled throughout the entire accounting period due to concerns over the spread of COVID. So once again none of these activities could be carried out. Two members of our Club spent a day each volunteering at the Activity Alliance Games for Disabled Athletes in Coventry, one of our members helped out at the ‘Hillbuster’ event in Hemel Hempstead that raised £22,000 for DENS a charity helping the homeless and several members also provided escort duty for the Apple Fayre Procession in Tring.
All Trustees of Tring Lions CIO are aware of, and have seen the guidance issued by the Charity Commission, relating to procedures that should be followed regarding good governance of a Charitable Incorporated Organisation.

Section D Achievements and performance
Summary of the main achievements of the charity during the year
During this accounting period the Club raised £2398 through fundraising, and another £8985 was raised through the Lions Bookshop from the sale of second hand (donated) books, DVDs etc.
Tring Lions Club CIO was also the recipient of three COVID grants during the accounting period of £500, £1000 and £2739 from National and Local Government due to the closure of the Bookshop due to earlier COVID restrictions. The total Income for Tring Lions Club CIO for this accounting period was £18802.
Following the granting of CIO status in December 2018 Tring Lions Club CIO is now able to make a Gift Aid claim after the end of the tax year on membership subscriptions, and also on cash donations under the Gift Aid Small Donations Scheme (GASDS). The amount claimed relating to the Gift Aid from H M Revenue & Customs is included in these accounts.
Tring Lions Club CIO also made 32 separate donations to local, national, and international charities as well as to local good causes during the accounting period. The total amount donated this year came to £13691. Examples of our donations are:
£1600 Lions Club International Foundation (Disaster Emergency Fund) £1241 for a new Defibrillator at New Mill Baptist Church, Tring £1000 Grove Road Primary School (for School Trip) £990 for installation of two new Benches outside St Peter & St Paul Church, Tring £510 to MENCAP Dacorum to help cover costs of a Coach Trip. £500 to the DENS Foodbank. £500 to the Gaddesden Riding for the Disabled Association £500 to the Pepper Foundation £500 to Tring School – World Challenge (Vietnam) £500 to Ukraine Convoy (to cover Petrol costs) (Included in the Donations to the Lions Club International Foundation (Disaster Emergency Fund) shown above is a £600 donation for humanitarian aid for the people of Ukraine).
We continue to bear the annual maintenance costs of a Defibrillator in Tring Town centre which we arranged to be installed. This amounted to £178 for the accounting period.
We collected 3795 pairs of spectacles from members of the public for recycling. This is done using collecting bins in local opticians. Members collect them regularly and they are then sent to another Lions Club for checking and shipping abroad to less developed areas such as in Africa for use by the people there. Also during the accounting period 45 used hearing aids were also collected for recycling.
Finally, the members of the Club carried out 2677 hours of service to the local community during this accounting period, volunteering at the Bookshop and working on the various local community projects mentioned at Section C above.
