Trustees’ Annual Report 2022 The William Mills Foundation

Overview

2021-2022 saw a slow return to a new normality after COVID had disrupted activity across the sector.

We had fantastic news from the National Lottery and, working alongside Bewdley School, we successfully applied for circa £196k to refurbish and open The Will Mills Centre. The Bewdley School has been the receiver and distributor of these funds, as they hold the lease for the Will Mills Centre from Worcestershire County Council.

The centre has been open as a youth hub since March 1[st] and is used by up to 50 young people on Monday to Friday evenings. The funding provides for a Youth Centre Manager to manage these events. The feedback from young people and the community has been extremely positive. The centre is used by multi-agency organisations to assist with your work in the morning and The William Mills Foundation has access to it in the afternoons, for delivery of our Programmes.

We hosted a golf tournament at Bewdley Pines Golf Club on May 2[nd] 2022 and held a 5-a-side tournament in conjunction with Rock Sports Football Club on June 26[th] 2022. We started planning for the Silver Celebration Ball which is due to be held on 22[nd] October 2022.

Both these events, and the centre launch were supported and attended by our supporters locally, and from across the UK. This included encouraging supporters who had previously not attended and donated to events.

We continued to provide the Facebook page, The Mindful Tribe Wyre Forest, to support 11–18-year-olds across the Wyre Forest with yoga, mindfulness and emotional well-being. See Appendix A: Activities, Services and Projects delivered for details.

The Foundation was also supported by people who undertook individual challenges to fund raise for the Foundation. These included: Rory & Arran Gulliver summited Mont Blanc – July 2022 Jack Tillett & Cameron Taylor – Newcastle Marathon Becky O’Brien – Cycle Ride Euan Ford – Snowdon Summit and Marathon.

We made 2 awards during the year. These were to support young people in attending national athletics championships. We also provided 4 circus skills sessions during the Easter holidays at The Will Mills Centre. These were targeted at young people who would otherwise have had no holiday activity. Ten families, plus an additional 16 young people with 9 adults attended these sessions.

Please refer to Appendix D: Trustees’ Financial Report 2021/202 Our aims for the year were:

Trustees’ Annual Report 2022 The William Mills Foundation

Registered Charity No. 1179790

  1. To open The William Mills Centre, as a legacy to Will and a location from which to deliver and extend our charitable work

  2. To increase our activity with young people once COVID-19 allows

  3. To increase donations via standing order

  4. To increase the diversity and number of our volunteer trustees

  5. To reinstate our fundraising events once COVID-19 allows.

We achieved objective 1 .

Objective 2 was not achieved before the end of this operating year as schools were still not back with young people attending full time. We had meetings with Bewdley School and Stourport High School and although programmes were arranged and offered to both schools, neither school took up on these, stating they were not organised enough since COVID to implement this extra-curricular activity. This was a disappointment to the Foundation and as a result, we agreed that we need to look at other avenues to access young people in the future.

We achieved objective 3. Our donations via standing order increased resulting in an average of £341 pcm.

We achieved objective 4 and were delighted to welcome Euan Ford and Bilal Ibrahim as trustees to the WMF. In doing so we acknowledged advice from the Charity Commission in reflecting diversity within our committee by enrolling two men in their 20’s

We achieved objective 5. Refer to Appendix D: Trustees’ Financial Report 2021/202

Our volunteers have continued to show wonderful support in undertaking individual events and increasing donations. In addition, we have kept our running costs as low as last year’s levels.

This allows us to end the year in a healthy financial position for a charity of our size and longevity, and confident that we will remain resilient and able to operate in the years ahead and in a post-COVID-19 environment.

The Mindful Tribe Wyre Forest

The Mindful Tribe page has been up and running since April 1[st] 2020. We have 42 members on the page. They receive a live zoom yoga session every month plus advice on mindful practice. All members can access every session numerous times, as well as on the live session as they are kept posted on the page. We have dip sampled the sessions and they have built wonderfully from beginners to really different styles. The yoga instructor is patient and gives modifications all the way through. The members tend to be shy to engage but are definitely using the resources.

I have sought feedback from the members and received the below comment, notably from parents:

"My daughters & wife have done the sessions together each week - lots of giggles & creaking joints, but they have enjoyed working together! Thank you for this opportunity."

"Hi, my daughter completed the box breathing yoga class to help with anxiety. She has used the method that this class taught several times to help control her worries and to help her stay calm when she has started to panic. It has been super useful and is something I know she will continue to use throughout her life. Thank you x”

We intend keeping this Facebook during COVID-19, so into our next financial year, as we have limited means in which we can actively support young people with face-to-face sessions.

Future Steps Awards are made to individual young people. These awards are made upon recommendation for young people who have potential shown in relation to a particular skill or life skill, but something within their life presents a barrier to their development or achievement. Generally, these awards are up to £250.

We have made two awards, relevant to this annual report since July 2021. The awards made have allowed two young people to attend and compete in National Athletics championships in Manchester.

Each young person awarded has some barrier or difficulty. Some of these are physical, some emotional and some practical. They may be caused by illness, disability, family breakdown or bereavement, for example. We use the knowledge and expertise of school staff to nominate young people for our awards.

We evaluate the effectiveness of our awards by asking the young people what they think they will achieve and why this will help them in their future life. We then set timelines for this feedback. The young people are then also seen and spoken to at some point during their award pathway by trustees from The WMF to assess progress towards these goals.

The Future Steps Programme did not operate in FY2021-2022.
