Surf Lifesaving Devon - Annual General Meeting Chair’s Report 2025

Introduction :

This year we had to alter our Annual Update to be in November due to a very crowded Calendar in the Spring of 2026.

Trustees:

Currently Devon has the following trustees: Sarah Durrant, Jan Reid, Dave Manley, Annette Deasy and myself.

I feel that we do need to expand our Trustees as there is much work to do and to ensure a wider representation of clubs if possible.

To this end we welcome Keith Hoppins, from Exmouth and Jacqui Southam, from Woolacombe and hope in the near future to have further representatives from Sidmouth, Croyde and Bideford plus any other club.

Keith Gammon does represent SLS Devon as our Sports Representative and has made a difference as to how Devon has been instrumental to changes within this area. He has reported back at every meeting and is a valued member of our team.

Overview :

It has been an amazing year for ‘ Sport Excellence’ in Devon with many clubs participating in both regional and national championships both Pool and Ocean and the advent of the following members being selected to represent Great Britain: Bob Whittaker and Kiren Gammon with David Miller as Reserve and Farli Abram as Youth Team Captain, Issy Holmes with Poppy Szymankiewiez as reserve. They earned many medals in the Ocean and certainly showed the wealth of talent that Devon has.

This was also played out in the SLSGB Nationals with our Devon Clubs putting on admirable performances in both the Pool and the Ocean. Congratulations to Woolacombe winning a triple in the Nippers, Youth and Open Ocean events. Devon is very proud of all our clubs and members who did enter the Nationals; they were extremely good and showed great promise.

Our members give up huge amounts of time in all aspects and we must thank James Szymankiewiez for his super Team Management for The Celtic Cup, which was held at Branscombe. We would like more of our Youth to join the Devon Youth Development Squad so that all clubs can be represented and then Devon may be able to field a full team. Grateful thanks to those that did travel; they showed great expertise in very tricky conditions and were a real credit to Devon and their clubs. We do have the depth within our clubs but we need more to participate please.

It is not only in Sport that we excel, club-members have also saved lives too. In the summer of 2025, Oscar, a young 14yr old lad from Saunton Sands Club, saved the life of a 60yr old board paddler and received National recognition and great accolade from the BBC. See the link below:

Another example of our versatility is the new example at Petroc; a newly affiliated educational establishment that has its own Surf Life Saving Academy. It is hoping to turn their youths’ skill development, passion and ambition into a career in LifeSaving. I believe that this maybe a first to do so?

Saunton Club also hosted a fantastic Nipper Development Day which was a great event encompassing life-saving skills and lots of fun and games including dancing! They also organised our first twilight event which we hope to have many more over the next year. We wish to encourage and be inclusive of all levels of ability and ensure greater participation in sport and further development of life-saving skills. Devon also promoted the 70yrs+ Masters Age Group which has given greater depth of inclusion.

The trustees are currently working on how to ensure better coverage and greater depth across the region.

For example there was training in Event Management and Safety and ensuing better accreditation paperwork. Although James Figes, could not officiate at our Nippers, we are grateful for his work with Keith Hoppins on our event accreditation which was excellent.

Sadly, due to adverse weather and lack of time, the SLSGB IRB Championships had to be cancelled for 2025. Much thought, work and training has gone into ensuring expertise and competence in driving and crewing IRBs on our seas and we have more members trained and enjoying the delights of this Life-saving section. A number of Saunton Club members have taken up IRBs and worked with Exmouth and Teignmouth gaining their awards plus given their time at our Regional and National Championships.

Officiating is an area of concern, plus also one of great sadness as this year we lost one of our much-loved officials, Don Duffield. He was very missed at our competitions both in Devon and across GB.

We have been fortunate to have a number who have stepped up and are on the new Officials Pathway and have already surpassed the Pool and Beach Level One. It is another direction and skill set which we Life-Savers can give to others.

Finally, to all those who work within our clubs and for our region to ensure the benefits of Surf Life Saving is given to members: whether it is coaching, admin, finance, safety, official, gear trailer, welfare, safeguarding, team-manager, committee member or supporter without YOU we could not exist so THANK YOU.

We look forward to 2026.
