– Devon SLS 2021 Sports Report AGM report for 27th January 2022

Overview

Following all events being cancelled in 2019/20, due to Covid, 2021 provided an opportunity to run Ocean events with limited restrictions. With all competitors having missed nearly two years of competitive surf lifesaving events the focus was very much on participation and fun events. Because some Covid restrictions were still in place and concerns that running events in the core of the summer could be difficult with very busy beaches being anticipated the events were moved to September dates.

Pool Events

Due to restrictions, lock downs and SLSGB Covid guidance no pool event took place in 2019 or 2021.

Ocean Events

The sports committee decided to have two events Nippers and a second event encompassing all other categories (Open, Youth, Masters). Due to limited dates (and favourable tides) the two events would happen on consecutive days one on south and one on north coast. While this is a lot of commitment from those officiating putting a lot of hours in over a condensed period, it did mean that all Devon events could be covered in one weekend limiting the disruption of two weekends for officials and possibly competitors and parents committed to different categories.

Nippers Devon Champs (Exmouth – 11[th] September)

Competitors – 198 (2019 – 244) down 20% from last event but given the disruption we have had over the last 18mths this is a good sign for the future.

Feedback from all was positive a great introduction on flat water for new participants and for those who had been away from competition for nearly 18mths. Thanks for Exmouth Beach Rescue Club for hosting the event so well and providing boat cover.

Youth, Open and Masters (Saunton – 12[th] September)

Competitors - 40 masters (2019?) / Youth – 78 (2019 104) / Open - 4! (2019 ~20)

The day ran well with the slightly reduced event programme (no double ski, tube rescue, board rescue, swim relay) finishing around 4.00pm. Medals for the youth only were presented.

Again, thanks to Saunton Surf Lifesaving Club for hosting the event and providing boat cover.
