To promote improve, develop, maintain, and advance education and the
arts for the public benefit, in particular through the promotion, support and
encouragement of the art of music and all other art forms and specifically,
but not exclusively, by commissioning or supporting the commissioning of
musical works for the viola with or without other instruments or voices
which in connection therewith may include public performances,
masterclasses, coaching, open rehearsals, workshops, talks and lectures,
outreach programmes, publication of scores and parts and recordings.
ln accordance with the objects of the Charity, the VCC underwrote the
commissioning of a new viola concerto by CASSANDRA MILLER which
received its world premiere in Brussels (March 2023, Brussels
Philharmonic Orchestra) and subsequent performance in Edinburgh (May
2023, Scottish Chamber Orchestra). Co-commissioned by BBC Radio 3,
Brussels Philharmonic, National Arts Centre Orchestra (Ottawa), and
Scottish Chamber Orchestra, supported by The Viola Commissioning
Circle, this important new work from a female composer has attracted
further upcoming performances in Sydney, Barcelona and Ottawa in
future seasons.
In accordance with the objects of the Charity, the VCC underwrote the
commissioning of a new viola concerto by RYAN WIGGLESWORTH
which will receive its world premiere in summer 2025. Co-commissioners
are currently being assembled for this seminal work.
Past underwritten viola concerto from ANDERS HILLBORG received
further performances in Stockholm (March 2023, Stockholm Radio
Orchestra), Basel (April 2023, Basel Symphony Orchestra), Frankfurt
(May 2023, Frankfurt Radio Symphony Orchestra), and Dresden (June
2023, Dresden Philharmonic).
The trustees have had regard to the guidance issued by the Charity
Commission on public benefit.

Summary of the main
achievements of the charity
during the year
The world premiere of the Cassandra Miller Viola Concerto given by
Lawrence Power and the Brussels Philharmonic achieved critical acclaim
particularly in The New Yorker (critic Alex Ross). The Hillborg Viola
Concerto, previously underwritten by the VCC and having received its
world premiere in Liverpool in October 2021, went on to further
performances in the 22/23 Season.
The Lockdown Commissions continue to inspire young viola players
globally, with new performances of the works. The ninth work
(commissioned by the VCC from Olly Mustonen) was given a live world
premiere as part of the Fathom performance at Southbank Centre in
December 2022.
