Additional information
The main activities we undertake in relation to our purpose and key objectives:
-
Promoting health and fitness from a young age
-
Providing healthy and nutritious snacks for children from deprived backgrounds.
-
Providing inclusive physical classes for children, their parents' carers, designed to strengthen their relationships and increase their confidence.
-
Delivery arts and crafts sessions both in person and remotely to foster creativity and mental wellbeing.
In this financial year, Bigger Heart Zanzibar was awarded £10,000 by The National Lottery Community Fund Wales. With the grant, we aimed to deliver a health and fitness project remotely for young people and families that were most affected by the impacts of the Covid-19 pandemic. This is especially children from disadvantaged background who are living in poverty and can't have access to open space for physical activities, which also increases mental health issues for these families who struggling to put food on the table. This project will addressed this issue by providing well-being support to children and families from St Thomas area. Weekly activities will include: - dance lessons - craft & painting lessons - health & nutrition lessons - family bonding awareness sessions to tackle domestic abuse
All activities were delivered on a weekly basis. A total of 86 children were engaged and fully participated in the activities.
Outcomes
Since the beginning of the COVID-19, these children from St Thomas were feeling isolated and frustrated by the lack of physical activities and social interaction.
This project made them feel connected, socially included, motivated and will continue to keep them healthy mentally and physically. We worked in partnership with St Thomas Community school and they helped us to share information about this project so that everybody knew about what we are offering and could access our support.
