BURTON AND DISTRICT BEEKEEPERS ASSOCIATION (Reg Charity 1178268) REPORT OF THE TRUSTEES YEAR ENDED 31[ST] DECEMBER 2020

Charitable Status

The Association is affiliated to The British Beekeepers Association. It is implicit that the rules of the BBKA form part of the governing rules of the Association. Formed over 50 years ago it became a Charitable Incorporated Organisation (CIO) in 2018.

The Association is also known as Burton BKA.

Trustees and Committee

The Trustees and Committee members who served at any time during the year are shown on page 1.

There is no formal policy for recruitment and training of Committee members or Trustees. Appointments are made in accordance with the governing document and are approved at the AGM each year.

Association Objects

The objects of the association are:

  1. To preserve the Honeybee by promoting and furthering the craft of Beekeeping.

  2. To educate the Association's members and the Public in all aspects of Beekeeping, including the benefits of bees in the Environment, in particular but not limited to the counties of Staffordshire, Leicestershire, Warwickshire and Derbyshire, in affiliation with the British Beekeeping Association.

Review of Achievements and Performance for the Year

In membership terms 2020 was another very successful year for the Association, total membership reached 134 (2019 125).

COVID - 19

In common with all organisations, COVID – 19 has severely restricted our ability to engage with one another, or with the wider public. So the year has been a very unusual one. However once we managed to master Zoom towards the end of the year, it became possible to meet electronically, and we held our first Association meeting just after the year end.

Education

On the education front, although many members continued to study modules under the B.B.K.A.’s examination scheme, no examinations have been possible. Nor was it possible to run a beginners course. A Zoom based beginners course for 10 members has been held since the year end.

BURTON AND DISTRICT BEEKEEPERS ASSOCIATION (Reg Charity 1178268) REPORT OF THE TRUSTEES YEAR ENDED 31[ST] DECEMBER 2020

Review of Achievements and Performance for the Year (Cont’d).

Training Apiary

After a major donation was received in the Spring we began to move forward with the training apiary. A road has been built, the area has been fenced and a container placed on site. We have cleared the area, and planted 35 fruit trees on the site. There are now 4 colonies in residence and we expect to hold our first beginners’ practical courses and our AGM there in late May.

Public Awareness

Due to COVID – 19 the Association has been unable to engage in any public meetings.

Financial Resources

Association funds have improved significantly over the year, with income in excess of expenses of £18.5k (2019 £9.4k). During the year we invested significantly in the training apiary which, after depreciation is recognised in the balance sheet at a net book value of £17.1k.

Overall, association funds amounted to £44.9k (2019 £26.4k) at the year end.

Asian Hornet

Asian Hornet incursions did not hit the UK significantly during 2020. Possibly one of the main reasons for this was significantly reduced travel and trade between the UK and France or Spain because of COVID, and the reduced opportunity for the pest to “hitch hike” into our countryside. Nevertheless this invasive species continues to be a serious threat to beekeeping in the UK.

Burton BKA has an Asian Hornet Action Team who will work with the agencies, and representatives from fellow associations to ensure that, everything which can be done to prevent this pest establishing itself in the UK is done. To this end we continue to participate in national initiatives aimed at supporting the authorities when incursions are found when the season develops.

Dave Coates (Chairman and Acting Secretary)

BURTON AND DISTRICT BEEKEEPERS ASSOCIATION (Reg Charity 1178268) REPORT OF THE INDEPENDANT EXAMINER YEAR ENDED 31[ST] DECEMBER 2020

I have completed my examination.

In connection with my examination, no matter has come to my attention:

  1. Which gives me reasonable cause to believe that, in any material respect,

  2. a. The requirements to keep accounting records in accordance with section 130 of the Charities Act 2011; and

  3. b. The requirement to prepare accounts which accord with the accounting records compliant with the accounting requirements of the Charites Act 2011

have not been observed.

  1. to which, in my opinion, attention should be drawn in order to enable a proper understanding of the accounts to be reached

BURTON AND DISTRICT BEEKEEPERS ASSOCIATION (Reg Charity 1178268) NOTES TO THE ACCOUNTS

Notes to the Accounts

Note 1. Restricted funds are funds for which the use is restricted by the donor. Grants from bodies wishing to support a specific activity, for example the development of a training apiary, would be treated as restricted funds.

Note 2. The accounts have been prepared on an accruals basis. 2021 subscriptions received in 2020 have been treated as paid in advance and are not therefore included in Charity funds at the end of the year.

Note 3 Association assets are stated at cost (or valuation at December 2020) less depreciation. Depreciation has been provided in 2020 at 15% (Library and Association equipment) or 10% (Cups and Awards). Preliminary expenditure to establish the training apiary has not been depreciated because it has not yet come into use.

Note 4. The Association has a small shop, run for the benefit of members, enabling beekeeping materials to be purchased at competitive prices.

Shop stock was valued at cost at the close of business on 31 December and the figure for shop profit has therefore been calculated using standard accounting practice.

Note 5. Cash in hand comprises cash floats confirmed as held by members at the year end, plus cash sales of sugar not banked at the year end.

Note 6. Creditors comprise expenses incurred by committee members prior to the year end, which have since been paid.
