Trustees’ Annual Report for the period

From 27/9/2019 Period start date To 26/9/2020 Period end date Charity name: Friends of the Stockton & Darlington Railway Charity registration number: 1177252

Objectives and Activities

SORP reference
Summary of the purposes of
the charity as set out in its
governing document
Para 1.17 To advance the education of the public
about the Stockton and Darlington
Railway (S&DR) and its seminal role in
the development of the modern railway
through its national and international
influence and the conservation of the
structures, archives and artefacts of the
S&DR.
Summary of the main
activities in relation to those
purposes for the public
benefit, in particular, the
activities, projects or services
identified in the accounts.
Para 1.17 and
1.19
Much of our work concerns working with
partners in local government and
statutory agencies. This is provided on a
purely voluntary basis by trustees
working with local authority planners, the
Rail Heritage Board and Executive group.
Volunteer groups and members also
provide guided walks and maintenance of
key heritage sites. Our expenditure in this
period has included funding studies for
conservation purposes at Brusselton
Reservoir and Fighting Cocks, the
printing of guided walks booklets and a
feasibility study for a heritage
engineering project to re-build an early
railway engine replica ‘Royal George’
Statement confirming
whether the trustees have
had regard to the guidance
issued by the Charity
Commission on public
benefit
Para 1.18 Our trustees and officers are aware of the
guidance on public benefit and the
requirements of this are taken into
account when decisions are made.

Achievements and Performance

SORP reference
Summary of the main
achievements of the charity,
identifying the difference the
charity’s work has made to
the circumstances of its
beneficiaries and any wider
benefits to society as a
whole.
Para 1.20 Much of our work at present concerns
working with partners in local
government and statutory agencies to
help shape and influence plans and
spending on conserving the built heritage
of the S&DR. To this end we have
contributed to the design and
development of the proposed S&DR
walking/cycling route; branding and
interpretation strategy and events
programmes. We have monitored
planning applications and engaged with
planning authorities and developers to
ensure heritage is preserved wherever
possible. We have ensured that local
plans for Durham, Darlington and
Stockton all include policies to protect
the S&DR. We have undertaken research
and published this in our journal the
Globe, issued 3 times during the year. We
continue to foster and support local
groups along the line to maintain and
care for their areas. We have undertaken
two research and management projects
at Fighting Cocks and Brusselton
Reservoir.

Financial Review

Financial Review
Review of the charity’s
financial position at the end
of the period
Para 1.21 The charity continues to prosper with
membership growing and fees playing a
significant part in our core income,
supplemented by the sale of guide books.
Expenses have largely involved room
hire for meetings, printing, insurance and
membership of professional bodies such
as the Heritage Alliance. Some small
amount of reasonable expenses have
been paid to trustees and volunteers to
assist with materials and transport. The
charity accepted some small donations
from amongst others Glaxo. A small
contract was let in partnership with
Middleton St George Parish council for
the undertaking of a Statement of
Significance for the Fighting Cocks pub
to explore community purchase and
planning matters.
Statement explaining the
policy for holding reserves
stating why they are held
Para 1.22 We hold reserves for two reasons. We
have restricted reserves which are the
result of grant aid from outside bodies for
specific purposes related to our
charitable objectives. We have
unrestricted reserves largely accrued
through membership fees and which
allow us to carry out our basic duties and
pay for required items such as public
liability insurance. Unrestricted reserves
are allocated as the need arises on a case
by case base to fulfil our charitable
objectives.
Amount of reserves held Para 1.22 £9788.10
Reasons for holding zero
reserves
Para 1.22 n/a
