'In May 2021 Jenna Downing from the YST, organised by the LSSP, came in to complete a session with 20 of our newly formed year 9 sports leaders. The course was designed to empower these leaders as Young Mental Health Champions, little did we know at the time what an amazing and wide-reaching impact this was going to have on our young people.
The day was really well received by the leaders and motivated them to want to help the students of our school. I was part of the presentation at the end of the day as judge and I was blown away by the plans the students had made.
After two weeks of further planning, we established a new after school club called 'Multisports' that was aimed at year 7 and 8 students who do not usually attend PE clubs. This ran for the rest of the term and was a huge success. It was so successful in fact that we put Multisports back on the extra-curricular timetable in September! It takes place after school on a Wednesday and we regularly have 50 students in attendance taking part in dodgeball, football, basketball and bench ball to name a few. This is all ran by our, now year 10, Young Mental Health champions and is a huge success for our school. I have never before been prouder of a group of students for seeing through an idea and running one of our most successful after school clubs.
We owe a great thanks to Jenna, the YST and the LSSP for giving our students this opportunity. Thank you.'
