Public engagements include presentations and speaking engagements in schools, universities, faith communities, at civic occasions. and to a wide range of voluntary organisations. Matters raised by our speakers indude equalty and diversity. The public in generdl, and the charfity's Ilst of supporters, are informed about Issues relatlng to refugees and those seeking asylum through our website. regular newsletters, engagement with the local media, and social media presence, such as Fa￿boOk. The Trustees consider that they have complied with their dutles to have due regard to the public benefit guidance published by the Charity Commission.

Achlevements and performance in 2022-2023 The Board of Trustees met 3 tlmes during the year, and also held the AGM in November 2022. Officers of the Board meet Infomially on a frequent basls. to carry out the administrBtion and oversee flnancial affairs of the charrty. The Compass programme included provision for Ukralnlan ￿fijgeeS coming to Stay wlth hosts In York from April 2022. By March 2023 that number had grown to 3SO. The Charity works closely wlth York city Council, Refugee Athon York. and other l¢xal agencles, Induding housing services, to ensure that Ukrainian refugees have suttable hosting arrdngements whith meet thelr needs. Welcome packs are provlded for the chlldren who come, and other essential items such as UK Sim cards are made available. In December 2022, 450 asylum seekers were placed in a York hotel. Compass appeals successfully gathered essentlal dothlngi welcome packs for those arriving in the aty, and other items Identified as Important to thelr well- belng, Indudlng cydes for transport. Those accommodated In the hotel are monitored to ensure they are provlded wlth a safe, healthy, and secure environment. A weekly meetlng wa5 held of all front Ilne agenaes, and the company responslble for overseelng the contrattual ccommodatr'on at the hotel was a150 represented. Home Office representatives occasionally attend meetlngs. Whilst hotels are not an Ideal location for asylum seekers, the cirrumstances and welfare of those housed In York are greatly improved by the actions and commltment of our charlty and our partner5. ESOL tutors continue providing lessons a￿0$5 the clty, wlth referrals to commended online courses proving helpful during the year. A further 37 Indlviduals seeking asylum, leave to remaln permanently in the UK, clalming benefits, or applylng for UK cltizenship were also supported by the charity. The Homestay programme provlded 243 emergency bed nlghts for asylum Seekers in the clty. They were assured of a local, safe and secure environment, at a time when Asylum Support houslng was severely overcrowded and people were being held in fonner militsry barracks or hotels. As our financial year began in April 2022, the War in Ukraine was one month old. We have received more refugees in York over the past year. than at any tlme in the short history of our charity. Because of the close links with our partners, which we have worked hard to create, we are confident of conb"nuing to deliver the support developed over the past year. Thi5 will protect the well-being and safety of new and exlsting sanctuary seekers. York will continue to live up to its national status as a City of Sanctuary.

Financlal Review The charity's financial position at 31st March 2023 was as follows. Income for the year totals £93,845 of which £3,413 was donated by individuals. £25,523 was given by faith and community groups and £2909 from fund raising. Grants for restritted funds amounted to £62,000. Over the year, 90010 of payrnents were used to deliver support and assist the needs of individuals and familie5. Retained funds for 2023 stood at £79,919 (2022- £23,034). Funding met the needs of those using our servlces over the year. The non- financial support from volunteers far exceeds the financial output we are able to offer. We expect to meet all commitments on spendlng for the planned progrdmmes in 2023-24. Increased demand on our services as a result of the arrival of Ukrainian refugees means the need to malntain our increased income for the year ahead. Funding is assured to enable us to provlde spedflc and dedicated work wlth Ukralnlans In York. Appllcations for grants, fundraising and other donations are in hand. The Charlty pollcy on holding reserves and why they are held Malntaining a reserve enables us to guarantee tontinulty of work over the next 12 months. The amount of reseNes held at 31st Marrh 2023 was Increased to £35000. The figure is subject to review by the Trustees, dependent on assessment of essential runnlng costs of the chanty. The charity does not have a policy of holding zero ￿ServeS. There are no funds materially in deficit as of 31st March 2023.
