British Pilgrimage Trust 2024 Impact Report British Pilgrimage Trust

Our Impact in 2024

A year of purpose, growth and connection

In 2024, the British Pilgrimage Trust made significant strides in reconnecting people with the land, with each other, and with themselves through the transformative power of pilgrimage.

Our 2024 Expanded Programme We saw a sharp rise in guided pilgrimage events, e.g. the Aldous Huxley pilgrimage at Halloween and the Green King pilgrimage in Windsor.

Our 2024 Wellbeing Impact All guided pilgrims in 2024 were invited to complete wellbeing surveys.

New routes specifically designed for bereaved parents and for people navigating emotional challenges were piloted with great success and will be developed further in 2025.

Average scores across physical, emotional, spiritual, and social measures ranged between 8.4 and 8.9 out of 10 , evidencing the significant personal benefits of pilgrimage.

Pilgrimages for the Bereaved

Our bereavement pilgrimage, led by Dawn Champion with support from Helena Grace and Julia Sands, gave grieving parents a gentle space for healing and consoling each other. Participants shared profound emotional experiences and reported an enduring sense of connection, support, and peace.

Pilgrimages for the Bereaved

“It was never a case of trying to fix anything... but we all left some things behind that needed leaving. Everyone helped each other take a few more steps along their grief journey.” — Dawn Champion, pilgrimage leader

“It was an extraordinary three days. I found it profound and powerful. To be guided, have companionship and support in the gentle and strong practice of walking with intent meant I was able to explore, learn about, feel and leave behind parts of my grief.” — Bereavement pilgrimage participant

“Being able to share my grief in an empathetic environment was very valuable. A pilgrimage is a very appropriate environment for sharing your emotions.” — Bereavement pilgrimage participant

“Time to reflect, to find meaning in the land, forming connections with others who share my loss. I feel I know how to draw upon walking to help me in the future.” — Bereavement pilgrimage participant

‘Reset Yourself’ Pilgrimages

Our ‘Reset Yourself’ programme helped participants process major life transitions and emotional trauma.

These two-day pilgrimages included overnight stays in Sanctuary accommodation and provided an immersive environment for deep personal reflection and healing.

‘Reset Yourself’ Pilgrimages

“Incredible release. Felt like three weeks away in two days. Genuinely transformational. Profound without the bullshit.” — Reset Yourself pilgrimage participant

“My favourite parts were the quiet parts — to see what bubbles up. Also, the guide’s enthusiasm and knowledge, being able to orientate myself not just physically but emotionally as well.” — Reset Yourself pilgrimage participant

“Listening to what the wind was telling us via the oak trees... the flowingness of the walk, not too restricted by timings. It really felt connected, and I enjoyed the silence.” — Reset Yourself pilgrimage participant

“My favourite part was the walking/land connection. Peter Owen-Jones’ spiritual guidance was so focusing and deeply moving. We laughed and cried and felt like we had been away a LONG time.”

YHA Pilgrimages for Low-Income Communities

We partnered with the Youth Hostel Association to offer free, guided pilgrimages as part of their Festival of Walking in Cambridge, Lewes, and York.

“Guy gave us such a fascinating insight into a very familiar location... interesting and invigorating ` along the way. Opportunities to reflect.”

“I didn’t really know what to expect... but once the group took up the intention with gusto it really worked. I genuinely felt like part of a group with a shared purpose.”

Dozens of new pilgrims took their first steps, with many sharing how the experience brought new understanding, invigoration, and a sense of community.

“The whole pilgrimage was special and so informative. I learnt about folklore concerning various plants, stood and reflected by bowl barrows, and was moved by the realisation that we were walking on ancient land in the footsteps of our ancestors.” — YHA pilgrimage participant

FINANCIAL REVIEW:

Financial position

We made a net loss for the year of £20,609 ( 2023 net loss - £35,198). This is accounted for by a £20,627 of book costs in the year through the reprint of a publication, together with nearly £22,000 of website redevelopment costs. These costs were planned and in our 2024 forecasts. Our unrestricted reserves on 31 December 2024 were £40,312 (2023 - £74,936) and restricted reserves were £14,015 (2023 - £nil).

Reserves policy

In 2023 the Board of Trustees reviewed our reserves policy in the light of the ongoing cost of living crisis. The free reserves fund was amended to a minimum of 4 months of essential expenditure and will rise again in 2024 to six months.

THE BRITISH PILGRIMAGE TRUST (CIO)

NOTES TO THE FINANCIAL STATEMENTS for the year ended 31 December 2024

1 Accounting policies

Basis of preparation of financial statements

The British Pilgrimage Trust is a charitable incorporated organisation (CIO) registered in England and Wales.

The address of the principal office is given in the charity information on page 10 of these financial statements. The nature of the charity's operations and principal activities are to re-establish and refresh the practice of Britain's distinctive pilgrimage tradition.

The charity constitutes a public benefit entity as defined by FRS 102. The financial statements have been prepared in accordance with Accounting and Reporting by Charities: Statement of Recommended Practice applicable to charities preparing their accounts in accordance with the Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland (FRS 102) issued October 2019, the Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the United Kingdom and Republic of Ireland (FRS 102), the Charities Act 2011, and UK Generally Accepted Practice.

The financial statements have been prepared to give a 'true and fair' view and have departed from the Charities (Accounts and Reports) Regulations 2008 only to the extent required to provide a 'true and fair view'. This departure has involved following the Accounting and Reporting by Charities: Statement of Recommended Practice applicable to charities preparing their accounts in accordance with the Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland (FRS 102) issued in October 2019 rather than the Accounting and Reporting by Charities: Statement of Recommended Practice effective from 1 April 2005 which has since been withdrawn.

The financial statements are prepared on a going concern basis under the historical cost convention, modified to include certain items at fair value. The financial statements are presented in sterling which is the functional currency of the charity and rounded to the nearest £.

The significant accounting policies applied in the preparation of these financial statements are set out below. These policies have been consistently applied to all years presented unless otherwise stated.

Income

All income is recognised in the Statement of Financial Activities once the charity has entitlement to the funds, it is probable that the income will be received and the amount can be measured reliably.

For donations to be recognised the charity will have been notified of the amounts and the settlement date in writing. If there are conditions attached to the donation and this requires a level of performance before entitlement can be obtained then income is deferred until those conditions are fully met or the fulfilment of those conditions is within the control of the charity and it is probable that they will be fulfilled.

Page 20 .

THE BRITISH PILGRIMAGE TRUST (CIO)

NOTES TO THE FINANCIAL STATEMENTS (continued)

for the year ended 31 December 2024

1 Accounting policies (continued) Expenditure

Liabilities are recognised as expenditure as soon as there is a legal or constructive obligation committing the charity to that expenditure, it is probable that a transfer of economic benefits will be required in settlement and the amount of the obligation can be measured reliably. Expenditure is accounted for on an accruals basis and has been classified under headings that aggregate all cost related to the category. Where costs cannot be directly attributed to particular headings they have been allocated to activities on a basis consistent with the use of resources.

Irrecoverable VAT is charged as an expense against the activity for which the expenditure arose.

Tangible fixed assets

Depreciation is provided at the following annual rates in order to write off each asset over its estimated useful life.

Fixtures and fittings 15% on a straight line basis

Stocks

Stocks are valued at the lower of cost and net realisable value, after making due allowance for obsolete and slow moving items.

Taxation

The charity is an exempt charity within the meaning of schedule 3 of the Charities Act 2011 and is considered to pass the tests set out in Paragraph 1 Schedule 6 Finance Act 2010 and therefore it meets the definition of a charitable company for UK corporation tax purposes.

Fund accounting

Unrestricted funds can be used in accordance with the charitable objectives at the discretion of the trustees.

Restricted funds can only be used for particular restricted purposes within the objects of the charity. Restrictions arise when specified by the donor or when funds are raised for particular restricted purposes.

Further explanation of the nature and purpose of each fund is included in the notes to the financial statements.

Pension costs and other post-retirement benefits

The charity operates a defined contribution pension scheme. Contributions payable to the charity's pension scheme are charged to the Statement of Financial Activities in the period to which they relate.

Page 21 .

THE BRITISH PILGRIMAGE TRUST (CIO)

NOTES TO THE FINANCIAL STATEMENTS (continued) for the year ended 31 December 2024

1 Accounting policies (continued) Cash

Cash at bank and cash in hand includes cash and short term highly liquid investments with a short maturity of three months or less from the date of acquisition or opening of the deposit or similar account.

Debtors

Debtors and creditors with no stated interest rate and receivable or payable within one year are recorded at transaction price. Any losses arising from impairment are recognised in expenditure.

Financial instruments

The charity only holds basic financial instruments as defined in FRS 102. Trade debtors, trade creditors and accruals are held at amortised cost as detailed in notes 10 and 11. Prepayments are not financial instruments. Cash is measured at face value.

Going concern

The financial statements have been prepared on a going concern basis as the trustees believe that no material uncertainties exist. The trustees have considered the level of funds held and the expected level of income and expenditure for 12 months from authorising these financial statements. The budgeted income and expenditure is sufficient with the level of reserves for the charity to be able to continue as a going concern.
