## **Our Impact in 2024** 

## A year of purpose, growth and connection 

_In 2024, the British Pilgrimage Trust made significant strides in reconnecting people with the land, with each other, and with themselves through the transformative power of pilgrimage._ 


Our 2024 Expanded Programme We saw a sharp rise in guided pilgrimage events, e.g. the Aldous Huxley pilgrimage at Halloween and the Green King pilgrimage in Windsor. 


Our 2024 Wellbeing Impact All guided pilgrims in 2024 were invited to complete wellbeing surveys. 


New routes specifically designed for bereaved parents and for people navigating emotional challenges were piloted with great success and will be developed further in 2025. 

Average scores across physical, emotional, spiritual, and social measures ranged between **8.4 and 8.9 out of 10** , evidencing the significant personal benefits of pilgrimage.

## Pilgrimages for the Bereaved 



Our bereavement pilgrimage, led by Dawn Champion with support from Helena Grace and Julia Sands, gave grieving parents a gentle space for healing and consoling each other. Participants shared profound emotional experiences and reported an enduring sense of connection, support, and peace.

## ‘Reset Yourself’ Pilgrimages 


Our ‘Reset Yourself’ programme helped participants process major life transitions and emotional trauma. 

These two-day pilgrimages included overnight stays in Sanctuary accommodation and provided an immersive environment for deep personal reflection and healing.

## YHA Pilgrimages for Low-Income Communities 

We partnered with the Youth Hostel Association to offer free, guided pilgrimages as part of their Festival of Walking in Cambridge, Lewes, and York.

## 2024 Digital Impact 


We launched a new digital presence in Q1 2024, centred around a pilgrimage library and interactive map. The British Pilgrimage Trust website is now home to the largest searchable digital library of pilgrimage routes and sacred places in Britain. Expansion and improvement of the digital product continues, to improve searchability, map performance, and pilgrim engagement.

## 2024 Digital Impact 

In concert with the website, we have continued investment in social presence, and expanded our email nurture and engagement campaigns, to improve the likelihood of those who visit our website to actually walk the path. 

280,000 people visited our website at www.britishpilgrimage.org in 2024 


11,500 new people joined our newsletter list in 2024, expanding our community of engaged followers to over 33,000, with our newsletters receiving an average open rate of 45% — 2x industry average. 



250 routes and 335 places were added to our new website, all fully documented, with route maps, photographs and links to guidebooks. 




Hundreds of route files are downloaded every month, to assist pilgrims follow a route. 


>48,000 fans follow us on social media allowing us to reach over half a million people with inspiration, stories and songs, reading recommendations and seasonal celebrations such as Michaelmas, Imbolc, Spring and Candlemas.

## Community Development & Advocacy 

Pilgrimage Advisory Support 

## New Pilgrimage Collaborations 

This support includes best practice guidance, business case evidence, and connecting local leads to useful networks. 

Meeting held with consultants for the Glastonbury World Heritage Site bid to explore how pilgrimage could support their proposal. 

Delivered talks across the country, including the St Olav’s Ways conference in Norwich and the Welsh Places of Worship forum establishing national and international links with St Olav’s Ways and other British stakeholders. 

Opened a collaborative dialogue with the Scottish Pilgrim Routes Forum, laying the groundwork for future cross-border efforts.

## International Collaborations

## Holistic Education 


## New Training Programme for Educators 

Our new training sessions for teachers and youth group leaders are now live, providing digital resources and immersive in-the-field experiences. 

The programme blends spiritual, sensory and cultural learning with national curriculum links.

We trialled a modular talk format to equip volunteers with compelling, accessible presentations to spread the message of pilgrimage more widely.

_for the year ended 31 December 2024_ 

The trustees present their report with the financial statements of the charity for the year ended 31 December 2024. The trustees have adopted the provisions of Accounting and Reporting by Charities: Statement of Recommended Practice applicable to charities preparing their accounts in accordance with the Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland (FRS 102) (effective 1 January 2019). 

## **OBJECTIVES AND ACTIVITIES** 

## **Mission and aims** 

The British Pilgrimage Trust (BPT) is dedicated to reviving the ancient practice of pilgrimage in Britain, making it accessible and relevant to people of all beliefs and backgrounds. Over the past year, our efforts have catalysed a significant increase in interest and participation in British pilgrimage, with our free resources and guided routes enabling thousands to reconnect with nature, their communities, and themselves. This annual report highlights our key achievements, the impact of our work on individuals and communities, and outlines our future goals.

## **FINANCIAL REVIEW:** 

## **Financial position** 

We made a net loss for the year of £20,609 ( 2023 net loss - £35,198). This is accounted for by a £20,627 of book costs in the year through the reprint of a publication, together with nearly £22,000 of website redevelopment costs. These costs were planned and in our 2024 forecasts. Our unrestricted reserves on 31 December 2024 were £40,312  (2023 - £74,936) and restricted reserves were £14,015 (2023 - £nil). 

## **Reserves policy** 

In 2023 the Board of Trustees reviewed our reserves policy in the light of the ongoing cost of living crisis. The free reserves fund was amended to a minimum of 4 months of essential expenditure and will rise again in 2024 to six months. 

## **STRUCTURE, GOVERNANCE AND MANAGEMENT** 

## **Governing Document** 

The British Pilgrimage Trust is constituted as a Charitable Incorporated Organisation (CIO) and is governed by its Constitution. 

## **Recruitment and appointment of new trustees** 

Trustees are recruited and appointed in accordance with the terms of the Constitution. Apart from the first trustees, every trustee must be appointed for a term of three years by a resolution passed at a properly convened meeting of the trustees. In selecting individuals for appointment, the trustees have regard to the skills, knowledge and experience needed for the effective administration of the CIO.

## **Independent Examiner's Report to the trustees of The British Pilgrimage Trust CIO** 

I report to the charity trustees on my examination of the accounts of the Company for the year ended 31 December 2024. 

## **Responsibilities and basis of report** 

As the charity's trustees, you are responsible for the preparation of the accounts in accordance with the requirements of the Charities Act 2011 (“the Act”). 

I report in respect of my examination of the Trust’s accounts carried out under section 145 of the 2011 Act and in carrying out my examination, I have followed all the applicable Directions given by the Charity Commission under section 145(5)(b) of the Act. 

## **Independent Examiner's Statement** 

I have completed my examination. I confirm that no material matters have come to my attention in connection with the examination which gives me cause to believe that in, any material respect: 

- 1 the accounting records were not kept in accordance with section 130 of the Charities Act; or 2 the accounts did not accord with the accounting records; or 

- 3 the accounts did not comply with the applicable requirements concerning the form and content of accounts set out in the Charities (Accounts and Reports) Regulations 2008 other than any requirement that the accounts give a ‘true and fair’ view which is not a matter considered as part of an independent examination. 

I have no concerns and have come across no matters in connection with the examination to which attention should be drawn in this report in order to enable a proper understanding of the accounts to be reached.

## **1 Accounting policies** 

## **Basis of preparation of financial statements** 

The British Pilgrimage Trust is a charitable incorporated organisation (CIO) registered in England and Wales. 

The address of the principal office is given in the charity information on page 10 of these financial statements. The nature of the charity's operations and principal activities are to re-establish and refresh the practice of Britain's distinctive pilgrimage tradition. 

The charity constitutes a public benefit entity as defined by FRS 102. The financial statements have been prepared in accordance with Accounting and Reporting by Charities: Statement of Recommended Practice applicable to charities preparing their accounts in accordance with the Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland (FRS 102) issued October 2019, the Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the United Kingdom and Republic of Ireland (FRS 102), the Charities Act 2011, and UK Generally Accepted Practice. 

The financial statements have been prepared to give a 'true and fair' view and have departed from the Charities (Accounts and Reports) Regulations 2008 only to the extent required to provide a 'true and fair view'. This departure has involved following the Accounting and Reporting by Charities: Statement of Recommended Practice applicable to charities preparing their accounts in accordance with the Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland (FRS 102) issued in October 2019 rather than the Accounting and Reporting by Charities: Statement of Recommended Practice effective from 1 April 2005 which has since been withdrawn. 

The financial statements are prepared on a going concern basis under the historical cost convention, modified to include certain items at fair value. The financial statements are presented in sterling which is the functional currency of the charity and rounded to the nearest £. 

The significant accounting policies applied in the preparation of these financial statements are set out below. These policies have been consistently applied to all years presented unless otherwise stated. 

## **Income** 

All income is recognised in the Statement of Financial Activities once the charity has entitlement to the funds, it is probable that the income will be received and the amount can be measured reliably. 

For donations to be recognised the charity will have been notified of the amounts and the settlement date in writing. If there are conditions attached to the donation and this requires a level of performance before entitlement can be obtained then income is deferred until those conditions are fully met or the fulfilment of those conditions is within the control of the charity and it is probable that they will be fulfilled.

## **1 Accounting policies (continued) Expenditure** 

Liabilities are recognised as expenditure as soon as there is a legal or constructive obligation committing the charity to that expenditure, it is probable that a transfer of economic benefits will be required in settlement and the amount of the obligation can be measured reliably. Expenditure is accounted for on an accruals basis and has been classified under headings that aggregate all cost related to the category. Where costs cannot be directly attributed to particular headings they have been allocated to activities on a basis consistent with the use of resources. 

Irrecoverable VAT is charged as an expense against the activity for which the expenditure arose. 

## **Tangible fixed assets** 

Depreciation is provided at the following annual rates in order to write off each asset over its estimated useful life.

## **Stocks** 

Stocks are valued at the lower of cost and net realisable value, after making due allowance for obsolete and slow moving items. 

## **Taxation** 

The charity is an exempt charity within the meaning of schedule 3 of the Charities Act 2011 and is considered to pass the tests set out in Paragraph 1 Schedule 6 Finance Act 2010 and therefore it meets the definition of a charitable company for UK corporation tax purposes. 

## **Fund accounting** 

Unrestricted funds can be used in accordance with the charitable objectives at the discretion of the trustees. 

Restricted funds can only be used for particular restricted purposes within the objects of the charity. Restrictions arise when specified by the donor or when funds are raised for particular restricted purposes. 

Further explanation of the nature and purpose of each fund is included in the notes to the financial statements. 

## **Pension costs and other post-retirement benefits** 

The charity operates a defined contribution pension scheme. Contributions payable to the charity's pension scheme are charged to the Statement of Financial Activities in the period to which they relate.

## **1 Accounting policies (continued) Cash** 

Cash at bank and cash in hand includes cash and short term highly liquid investments with a short maturity of three months or less from the date of acquisition or opening of the deposit or similar account. 

## **Debtors** 

Debtors and creditors with no stated interest rate and receivable or payable within one year are recorded at transaction price. Any losses arising from impairment are recognised in expenditure. 

## **Financial instruments** 

The charity only holds basic financial instruments as defined in FRS 102. Trade debtors, trade creditors and accruals are held at amortised cost as detailed in notes 10 and 11. Prepayments are not financial instruments. Cash is measured at face value. 

## **Going concern** 

The financial statements have been prepared on a going concern basis as the trustees believe that no material uncertainties exist. The trustees have considered the level of funds held and the expected level of income and expenditure for 12 months from authorising these financial statements. The budgeted income and expenditure is sufficient with the level of reserves for the charity to be able to continue as a going concern.
