CARE FOR ZAMBIA – TRUSTEES REPORT YEAR ENDING 31 JANUARY 2021

Care for Zambia is the main provider of funds for the Mutende Project, Chingola, Zambia.

Care for Zambia works in partnership with the trustees of the Zambian Charity “Mutende Children’s Village”.

The project runs a children’s village and a primary school.

On average there are 34 children in the village and 170 children in the primary school.

2018 saw the firm establishment of two youth facility houses to cater for young people from Mutende Children’s Village, who have reached 18 years of age but have not finished their school education or are moving into tertiary education and cannot be re-integrated back into their extended family.

Activities in the year ending January 2021

A planned visit by three individuals was cancelled at the last minute in March 2020 due to Covid-19.

Zambia suffered economically from the result of Covid. The primary school was closed for much of the year. As no school fees were coming in, it was decided to pay a furlough payment of 75% of salary to the teaching staff in the school.

The refurbishment of the school continued with the replacing of 45 chairs and 6 tables in the school. It is the intention to upgrade the resources at the school.

Increased financial support has been given to the Primary School in a bid to support and improve the education. Some structural changes were implemented, but this has been hindered by Covid.

Money was donated to Care for Zambia to support those struggling in Zambia and this was duly sent out to help some families that were in difficulty due to Covid

All the workers in Mutende Children’s Village continued to work as normal and no cases of Covid were recorded by the children or workers. A strict policy of social distancing and exclusion of visitors was implemented by the management with success.

2020 saw continued improvement in educational results for many of the children in the children’s village. The success of their peers has been reported as giving great encouragement to the younger children.

It was the 4[th] anniversary of running the youth facilities, which have been a great success in supporting the young people during their tertiary education or training.

Mutende Children’s Village began a farming project, using money from the profits of the chicken project, with some success.

Throughout 2020 only one regular supporter out of seventy people ceased giving their monthly support and new people came on board to more than make up for this.
