Annual Report 2021
We are delighted to hold the AGM in person this year and are grateful to The Swan and Helmet for providing a suitable venue. The meeting is taking place at this time of year so that there is time for the accounts presented to the meeting to have been approved by the independent examiner .
This has been another difficult year for The Playhouse Theatre during which sadly our doors have remained closed. For many months we were unable to enter the premises in order to carry out improvement works and then discovered latent defects which need to be fully resolved before we are able to invite audiences back into the theatre.
On a brighter note we thank Sally Fuller our Treasurer, as although our regular sources of income have ceased and we have had to meet our usual overheads including rent, our overall reserves have increased substantially. This has been achieved through actively seeking and obtaining substantial financial assistance in the form of grants to minimise the impact of closure due to the pandemic. We were also able to make a substantial claim for business interruption caused by a notifiable disease under the insurance policy that we held from October 2019 to October 2020. (We no longer have the benefit of that cover as it was removed when the policy was renewed).
We shall have no difficulty in spending these funds on works required in order to maintain and improve the premises and make the theatre as covid safe as possible before we return to see productions. The current focus is on replacing the stage and providing ventilation in the auditorium. There are several other projects under consideration and we are likely to seek additional opportunities for funding in future with guidance from Gary.
The overall full membership remains at 61. When we have a firm date for reopening we shall be able to review the costs of admission and membership.
We are grateful to Mike, Ed and Phil for keeping a regular eye on the building while it was closed. Thanks also to Mark for helping Ed with preparation for the required works to replace the stage their efforts are really appreciated.
Running the theatre while closed and planning for re-opening would not have been possible without the tireless efforts of the trustees and committee
members who have continued to seek to ensure that The Playhouse Theatre has a future.
There are currently 5 Trustees when we are required to have between 3 and 9. Additional trustees can be co-opted at any time. Two are seeking re-election at the AGM
The trustees are delighted to be able to appoint members of The Management Committee ably Chaired by Corinna, to which the day to day operation of the theatre is delegated, to continue in their current roles with the exception of the role of house manager a position that is currently vacant. Our thanks go to Juliet O’Connor for having so ably carried out this role for several years and she will be missed as an actor, director and friend. We wish her every happiness in her new life in Scotland.
We encourage all of you to remain involved in the future of the theatre as performers, supporters and audience. We shall also need volunteers for the bar and front of house when we are able to re-open. We are looking forward to being able to invite audiences back into the building next Spring with ‘Lilies of the Land’ and ‘Bouncers’ as the first two shows.
