This is the annual report of the Trustees of Berwick & District Friends of Dementia, first registered as a charity on 11 September 2017 –charity number 1174583.

The report covers the period from 1 April 2023 to 31 March 2024.

Mission Statement

Berwick & District Friends of Dementia exists to support persons in Berwick-upon-Tweed and surrounding area who have a diagnosis of dementia, together with their family and carers.

Aims and objectives

Berwick & District Friends of Dementia aims to provide support and encouragement to persons suffering from mild to moderate dementia, and their families and carers, by means of social opportunities and a range of appropriate leisure activities.

Achievements and performance

The organisation’s principal undertaking is Alz Cafe, which is held each Thursday from 1030 to 1230 at a hired premises in Berwick-upon-Tweed. Here refreshments are provided for members, and there is time and space for socializing and to undertake stimulating activities.

There are currently 38 members and 5 volunteers. We also welcome anyone interested in visiting us to observe how we operate.

Financial report and accounts

Berwick & District Friends of Dementia has benefited during the year from many generous donations made by organisations and individuals from Berwick and the surrounding area.

Donations have been received this year totalling £6917.

Main areas of expenditure were rent for premises - £2009; transport costs - £1818; group activities - £2840, outings and events £6479.

Expenditure exceeded income by £4987 this year, but our bank balance at 31 March 2024 was £36,442

Activities

Regular activities have included singing, massage therapies and seated yoga, poetry reading and pottery, as well as a variety of indoor and tabletop games. outings to various shows and pantomimes, an annual boat trip in the River Tweed, and celebrations of St Andrews Day and Burns Day. There were coach trips to Kelso Garden Centre and the Alnwick Garden.

In June we celebrated our 10[th] birthday as an organisation with a special event o entertainment and refreshment.
