Objectives and Activities

|---|---|---|
| Summary of the purposes of the charity as set out in its governing document |
Para 1.17 | To advance the education of the public in the history and heritage of Wales, in particular in the social, cultural and economic history of Cardiff docklands and the surrounding area in particular but not exclusively by providing an educational resource of historical material on the history and heritage of the area and creating opportunities for people to learn about the history and heritage of the area. |
| Summary of the main activities in relation to those purposes for the public benefit, in particular, the activities, projects or services identified in the accounts. |
Para 1.17 and 1.19 |
The main focus of our work has been the projects contained in the grant from NHLF namely Religion and Welfare in Butetown from the 1940’s to 1960’s and forgotten sporting icons. Volunteers, led by one of our trustees have gathered a large amount of information which we now have to develop into useable formats suitable for use in Schools. This work has brought us into closer contacts with local groups and clubs where we are always met with enthusiasm and interest. We have presented our work and the history of Tiger Bay to a range of organisations, local and national. Tiger Bay and the World [TBW] are part of a UK wide network focussing on Black history from a local perspective Together with Butetown Community Centre we hosted a delegation of people from Birmingham Alabama USA, where links |
| between Alabama and Wales were rekindled. Amongst the many events the chair of trustees presented our work at the launch of Wales Black History 365 and at a Jaz in the Bay celebration the diseased singers from the old Tiger Bay. Schools’ engagement continues and has expanded to include a Comprehensive school in Cardiff. TBW has developed a good working relationship with DARPL – Diversity and Anti Racism Professional Learning, who are helping us develop parts of collection into teaching materials. The targeting of underrepresented groups to include those with Protected Characteristics, for volunteers is continuing slowly but steadily. With the employment of a Community Engagement worker, this work has gathered momentum and numbers have increased We have run a number of volunteer days, where they were able to taed part in activities connected to our work. Volunteers were involved in an all day workshop where they interviewed and filmed elders from the community. In fulfilling its duties to meet the public benefit we have developed productive partnerships. Key amongst them are the partnerships with Glamorgan Archives and Cardiff Museum as well as local groups. We have also developed a good relationship with Cardiff University School of Journalism, where our volunteers were involved in developing an exhibition of photographs We are part of a Welsh History Forum shaping the development of showcasing Welsh History Community involvement and giving back is an integral part of HCE’s work. |

Para 1.38 | Volunteers play a critical role in the organisation without them we would not be able to achieve as much as we have. A dedicated group of volunteers have attended Glamorgan Archive where they have almost completed the tasks of cataloguing our collection. Other older volunteers help us identify individuals in old photographs and are always willing to be interviewed for exhibitions and TV programmes. Trustees and members of the steering committee give a lots of time and energy, keeping the organisation on track towards its programme of work and providing sound professional guidance. |
