Para 1.17 and 1.19 |
Over 120 students from over 80 state supported schools registered on our main programme, Art History for Everyone. This delivers an Extended Project Qualification (EPQ) in one year, and is underpinned by the Art History A Level teaching, delivered over the course of two years, both from September 2019. Encouragingly, we saw increased demand year on year for places on our two courses at The National Gallery and Wallace Collection. We were oversubscribed with students voluntarily choosing to attend classes on term-time Saturdays to study for additional qualifications. Significantly, at least half of our students are from BAME and/or Widening Participation backgrounds, and often both. AHLU offers students weekly online homework clubs and individual EPQ and |

study support from AHLU’s Student Liaison
Officer plus individually assigned specialist
EPQ mentors from across the sector. We
also offer students support with university
applications, access to work experience,
information about careers in the arts, and
membership of our alumni organisation.
Until March 2020 our free Art History A
level and EPQ courses for state supported
students were delivered on term-time
Saturdays at the National Gallery and the
Wallace Collection in dedicated teaching
spaces generously donated by the galleries
When the galleries closed in March 2020,
as a result of the pandemic, our Art History
for Everyone A level and EPQ courses
pivoted online, and have continued virtually
ever since, on Zoom.
In the academic year from September
2020, we recruited 80 students. Over 40%
of this cohort of students are BAME, over
60% have Widening Participation
indicators, and over 30% are both BAME
and WP.
AHLU’s continued online delivery again
allowed us to recruit over half of our
students from outside Greater London.
55% of the current student cohort come
from across the UK, including Scotland,
Wales and Northern Ireland. A significant
proportion of this cohort have Special
Educational Needs, significant disabilities
and some are Looked After Children / in
Foster Care.
Many of our students tell us they have had
more teaching and support from AHLU than
from their own schools throughout the last
year of the pandemic.
AHLU has become recognised as a sector
leader in delivering Art History courses
online, collaborating with partner
organisations including the National Gallery
and Christie’s on online events.

| Summary of the main achievements of the charity, identifying the difference the charity’s work has made to the circumstances of its beneficiaries and any wider benefits to society as a whole. |
Para 1.20 | Our most significant achievement in the year to September 2021 was to run a complete academic year using on line delivery. As noted above, the Covid lockdown meant that we had to “pivot” to online provision, like many other organisations. We have continued virtually ever since, on Zoom. Our online classes are interactive and run by expert teachers, with the support of a team of specialist teaching assistants who run break-out group discussion using interactive Miro whiteboard technology, and teaching resources issued via the Google Classroom. |

Review of the charity’s Para 1.21 At the end of the accounting period the
financial position at the end charity held significant reserves. See
of the period CC16A
During the financial year achieved and
indeed exceeded our reserves policy: to
hold six months’ worth of turnover in
unrestricted reserves.
Statement explaining the Para 1.22 The aim was to achieve a level of reserves
policy for holding reserves that would ensure the delivery of a full
stating why they are held academic with no risk of disappointing
students.
In practice this means a reserve policy of
having 6-month turnover.
Fundraising during the year was very
successful especially considering the
extremely challenging Covid environment
when many charities were struggling with
fund raising.
Amount of reserves held Para 1.22 At 30 [th] September 2021:
