Section D Achievements and performance
Summary of the main achievements of the charity during the year
Planning Permission: A significant part of 2020-2021 activity involved applying for an achieving planning permission for the proposed artwork to be sited on the “green triangle” which is the acknowledged “gateway” to Bedford Park just oytside St Michael and All Angels Church on land owned by London Borough of Hounslow. This involved liaising with, at a professional level, topographical and arboricultural surveyors, heritage impact assessment experts, architects, planning consultants, conservation officers and local authority planning department as well as canvassing support across a wide range of local and international literary and educational opinion and engaging with the local community, private individuals, schools, St Michael and All Angels PCC and the Bedford Park Society (conservation). Managing this crucial public-relations and compliance phase without inperson meetings (due to COVID-19 restrictions) proved particularly difficult but we benefitted particularly from the support of the project’s patrons including Dr. Rowan Williams, poet and former Archbishop of Canterbury and actor Ciarán Hinds, plus Ireland’s Ambassador to Great Britain, HE Adrian G O’Neill as well as major support from local community groups, private individuals and local professionals offering advice and guidance. Planning permission was granted on 30[th] April 2021 Funding: The other main activity in 2020-2021 involved raising funds for the artwork (plus ground work, base/plinth, delivery, installation etc). Funding to pay for the professional fees (above) was sourced through local donations and donations via website (as well as lectures, literary walks etc).
A significant grant came from London Borough of Hounslow “Thriving Communities” Fund with the balance (plus fundraising costs) to be raised through Spacehive’s crowdfunding platform.
As with the planning-permission phase, fundraising without local inperson lectures, readings, events and literary walks (all prohibited for most of the year due to COVID-19) was particularly complicated but sme Zoom meetings, plus a lecture, plus a v. high level of social media activity meant getting very close to target within the financial year. Target was finally achieved on 20[th] July 2021 ( ie post-2020-2021-YearEnd).
