After several years of vastly reduced due to COVID-19, the charity was able to raise funds and deliver a single principal project to further its objective: Aphasia New Music Group(ongoing) After an unsuccessful attempt in the previous period, the charity reapplied and secured a grant of £67,540 from Arts Council England’s National Lottery Project Grants programme. This sum enabled the delivery of regular co- creative music workshops for adults with aphasia in London, in collaboration with the UCL Communication Clinic and Second Movement. The charity also took one-off music-making workshops to drop-in groups across the country, in partnership with national charity SayAphasia. |

Achievements and Performance

| Summary of the main achievements of the charity, identifying the difference the charity’s work has made to the circumstances of its beneficiaries and any wider benefits to society as a whole. Para 1.20 In delivering the long-planned Aphasia New Music Group, the charity pioneered the use of music making as a tool for creative expression for communication disabled adults, as well as exploring its potential for integration into speech and language therapy. The charity achieved this by building on strong links with the UCL Communication Clinic and Second Movement. and is planning to sustain the focus of this project on collaborative work between people with communication disabilities, artists and speech and language therapists. The Aphasia New Music Group unites people with aphasia (PWA), professional musicians, and speech and language therapists (SLTs). Unlike other music projects, which typically involve singing familiar songs or commissioning composers to write on behalf of PWA, the project exclusively focuses on the co-creation of new music. Facilitators support individuals to write lyrics, compose, use their voices and play instruments, always led by the interests and experiences of group members. When a person’s access to language changes, music can offer a vital form of self- expression, social cohesion and empowerment. In addition, writing music from scratch requires a great deal of communication and collaboration, offering a range of additional benefits which integrate well with PWAs’ ongoing therapy in clinical settings. The charity’s partnership with the UCL Communication Clinic enabled us to engage, through HEIF funding at the UCL Division of Psychology and Language Sciences, a Research Fellow SLT. Covering all our activity to date, this SLT measured the project’s impact and found evidence of statistically significant benefit to PWA, using two standard measures (the Aphasia Impact Questionnaire and the Communication Confidence Rating Scale). These measures indicated that after taking part, people with aphasia were significantly more confident in their communication, and that aphasia had significantly less of an impact on their lives. Benefits also extend beyond sessions; for example, one individual began using public transport independently again for the first time since their stroke, and another traveled outside London with us for the first time in three years. Beneficiaries also include family and friends, who see loved ones in a new light; audiences, who learn about aphasia; and artists, who develop new skills in collaborating with PWA. |

Independent examiner’s report to the trustees of Oedipa for the Year Ended 31 July 2023
I report on the accounts of the Trust for the year ended 31 July 2023, which are set out on pages 2 to 8.
Respective responsibilities of trustees and examiner
The charity’s trustees are responsible for the preparation of the accounts. The charity’s trustees consider that an audit is not required for this year under section 144(2) of the Charities Act 2011 (the 2011 Act) and that an independent examination is needed.
It is my responsibility to:-

Basis of independent examiner’s report
My examination was carried out in accordance with the general Directions given by the Charity Commission. An examination includes a review of the accounting records kept by the charity and a comparison of the accounts presented with those records. It also includes consideration of any unusual items or disclosure in the accounts, and seeking explanations from you as trustees concerning any such matters. The procedures undertaken do not provide all the evidence that would be required in an audit and consequently no opinion is given as to whether the accounts present a “true and fair view” and the report is limited to the matters set out in the next statement.

1. ACCOUNTING POLICIES
Accounting convention
The financial statements have been prepared under the historical cost convention, and in accordance with the Financial Reporting Standard for Smaller Entities (effective April 2008), the Charities Act 2011 and the requirements of the Statement of Recommended Practice, Accounting and Reporting Charities.
Incoming resources
All incoming resources are included on the Statement of Financial Activities when the charity is legally entitled to the income and the amount can be quantified with reasonable accuracy.
Resources expended
Expenditure is accounted for on an accruals basis and has been classified under the headings that aggregate all the cost relating to the category. Where costs cannot be directly attributed to particular headings, they have been allocated to activities on a basis consistent with the use of resources.
Taxation
The charity is exempt from tax on its charitable activities.
Fund accounting
Unrestricted funds can be used in accordance with the charitable objectives at the discretion of the trustees.
Restricted funds can only be used for particular restricted purposes within the objects of the charity. Restrictions arise when specified by the donor or when funds are raised for particular restricted purposes.
