Actlvltie8 and Achievements Governance Sadly. our chair, Bobbie Roberts died in February this year. Shè had been active right up to her admission to hospital and had chaired 8 meeting on 31. January. She made a great contribubon to the Friend8. and her d8dic4lion and hard work will be greatly missed. We were abo very sorry to hear of the death of our previous chair Colin Jeynes in November 2023. Although Colin Was no longer a trustee. continued to SeTr as volunteer guide and was a generous surter of the Friends. We ended the year with only five trustees hope to rlt three more al our first meeb'ng of the next finanaal year. The member8hip a8 at the end of March 2024 stood at 36 member8. W8 8r8 gr8teful to David Varley for pointing us in the direction of the Briiish Horologi1 Institute where we found Ross Alcock MBHI. Following an exploratory visit. he gave us a quotstion and th8 trustees decided to have two tavem dcrks and one longcase dock servId. A small adjustment is still needed on one to cope with the changing temperature, it is very e1ComIng to hear the dock thiming. We appreaate the hdp of Herttage ser418 in process and for 8greeing to resume weekly dock winding. The Mansion House has t1 dcth by Benjamin Huntsman, the Epworth born dockmaker who invented the crucible 8teelmaking process, and we have stsrted the pr6$8 of see.ng a grant to hav8 one of them restored to working order. (2) Advanclng •ducatlon of the publk and facllttatlng publlc use of the Manslon House and promotlng rnsearch We are delighted that the regular monthly Open Days nave taken place. and our volunteers have enjoyed welcoming people to the Mansion House and sharing their krK)wledge of the wond&rful building. A total of 1375 people ifjsited the Mansion House, many telling us that they INed in Doncaster all their lives but had not yet been inside. The numbers indude the 508 WIK) came through the doors on Steampunk Day. and whilst for some the main attractions offered were the popup café and a a wonderful backdrop for photographs, the event helped to introduce the Mansion House to a whole new group of people. The FrieIS were also pleased to out six tr5 for groups visiting the Mansion House, induding a repr&sentative from the Sister Crties programme in Mfilmington North Carolina, who was hoy.ng to stsrt a joint project with Doncaster. We could not support the Open Days and t(yJrs without our team of volunteers, and we were very pleased to recruit a further 8. Nearty all have now completed the Safeguarding training prov1dj by Doncaster Ciwncil. We have held two valuable volunteers, meets'ngs where new i$ and suggestions for improvement are aired. Prior to lod(down. the Friend8 had relVed a grant from the John and Ruth Howard Charitsble trust to print a ne*Y guidebook to the Mansion House. During lockdown
considerable rk had been (rried out by (Mn Evans. our former Secretary, to pull t0gettrr expert COntriborS to produce a digital version which was posted on the Friends, website. This year the trustees decided to use the funds to have the guidebook printed, but even in 3 years there were amendrnents to be made to indude new events induding the visit of the KiTrJ and Queen, and corrections due to new Search. All the contn'butors were therefore asked again to review a revised version, and the new guidebooks knpre printed in September. Complimentary copies 8re given to the volunteers and schwl groups. and are sold to the public via th8 Tourist Infcffiiation Ofte and on Open Days. All profits are used by the Friends for their charitable purkxjses. A new membership leaflet at)out the Friends was printed wrthout charge by Doncaster Counctl print department, and we are very grateful for their help. The November newsletter was produ1. induding artTdes about the Mansion House clocks. the Camielite Priory and Fr8nk Lockwood. The March edition was delayed due to Illness but will go OLrt in May 24. At our AGM David Varley gave a fascinating talk to our mombers and members of the public aboui the development of dock making, and speafically about the clock8 in the Mansion House. Thè Friends are happy to give illustrated talk8 to outside groups about th8 M8nsion House. and this year one give to the rmSWorth Ladies. The Friends continued to maintain 8n active Fabook page, and thanks are due to Miriam Clarke, who started the page and built it up to nearfy 1000 followers. VJe were pleased to welrxjme back Frank Carpenter as a voluntser, and he now does the regular posting. The Doncaster and Distri Heritage Assooation restarted ts annual Heritage Day, in September and were happy to take a *ll to promote ts Mansion House. We are grateful to lan Moore at 20-20 design for his help with our website. New articles have been added inctuding one relatiro to the Cannelite Priory. We Support the COU11 in encouraging use of th8 Manwon House. and we wera delighted when an event was held there in March, hosted by the Lord Lieutenant South Yorkshire, at which members of the national Community and Voluntary Service Honours Committee gave presentations in ord8r to encourage nominats'ons from peOe in Doncaster and surrounding areas. We hope that the very successfvl Aftemoon teas whith held before Covid will be resumed in the near future.
