MINUTES OF THE ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING OF THE

NOTTINGHAMSHIRE LOCAL HISTORY ASSOCIATION

At 3.45 at Ravenshead Village Hall on 2 April 2022

• 1) There were no apologies for absence.

• 2) The results of the 2021 voting in lieu of Minutes were noted. Proposed by Carol Moore and seconded by Sylvia Barton.

• 3) The Trustees’ Report for 2021 was accepted. Proposed by Jo Blaney and seconded by Gill Sarre.

• 4) Treasurer’s Reports on a) Statement and Adoption of Accounts for 2021 and b) Membership Subscriptions were accepted. Proposed by Gill Sarre and seconded by Mike Chapman.

• 5) Election of Officers and Committee Members. The following were elected ‘en bloc’:

Chair: Bob Massey

Secretary: David Barton

Treasurer: David Anderson

Other Committee members: Adrian Gray, Jeremy Lodge, Judith Mills, Sarah Seaton and Chris Weir.

Proposed Jo Blaney and seconded by Marg Thorne.

• 6) Any Other Business: The meeting was advised that the autumn NLHA Forum would be held on Saturday October 29[th] at Ravenshead Village Hall.

TRUSTEES REPORT ON ACTIVITIES DURING 2022

FORUMS

Two Forums were held in 2022, in April and October. Both were held in Ravenshead Village Hall and were well attended. Each offered a balanced range of local history topics.

• On April 2[nd] :

• Nottingham Women’s History Group: Plaques to Nottingham’s wonderful women Dr Charlotte May and Dr Anna Walas: Nottingham, city of caves Peter Liddle: The Rutland Roman Villa Project David Johnson: Elizabethan wall paintings in the Saracen’s Head Hotel, Southwell

NOTTINGHAMSHIRE HISTORIAN

The new size of the magazine seems to work well. It’s easier to keep on a bookcase. If we had the resources and manpower, it would be a good idea to create an index of all articles in the magazines (starting with the small version only – past copies would be far too time consuming to index) and source binders so that a collection of the magazines could become, in effect small books that fit perfectly on the shelf for our members. I appreciate that they become available online, but the above would be an added bonus. I appreciate that none of us currently have the time to do this.

I have at least two large articles for the next Historian but need more for the following one. If you could put a call out to members at the next meeting. Putting the magazine together is a timeconsuming exercise and I only really man the email address around preparation time. I took the role on temporarily whilst a replacement editor was found, however, I appreciate that like all roles in the organisation, no one really wants to take on such a time-consuming position. If a replacement was found, I would happily step aside. Jeremy Lodge has continued to be a great support to my role as editor and I appreciate his input.

This month’s edition has articles on Pelham Street and its Lost Statue , The Trent Bathman ; Henry Russell Tootell, East Retford and the Browning Connection and Jesse Yelton Cherry : From Utah to Nottingham . As well as the usual Time Hop, Book Reviews and Websites and Jeremy had kindly added a piece about Collingham and the Coronation.

For the next edition, I have an article on Greasley Castle by Stanley Chapman and another by nonagenarian Eric Walker on his childhood in Nottingham. Eric’s is so long, it will have to be in two parts but contains brilliant information about Nottingham eighty years or more ago.

SOCIAL MEDIA, WEBSITE AND NEWSLETTER

1. The newsletter is now produced to a regular timetable every two months. The number of organisations contributing has slowly increased and the list of speakers has been amended to only cover speakers with relevance to Nottinghamshire.

2. After a brief technical issue, the website events page is being updated regularly. However it tends to be the same few organisations that request this. If organisations would use the NLHA Group Facebook page, then they would probably reach far more people than those who might chance to look at the website.

3. The two Facebook pages continue to function in parallel. It is arguable that we have any need for two pages and should perhaps seek to bring them together. The ‘main’ NLHA page has 3700 followers, with about 58% women. Posts can regularly reach over 8000 people. Most of the followers come from Nottingham, Retford, Mansfield and Newark. The NLHA group is smaller with, curiously, the most members from Newark. However it is more active as more people can participate.

During 2022 Grants were awarded to the following individuals and organisations:

• Nottinghamshire Nursing History Group – 1) Funding to finance purchase of images for history of Sherwood hospitals project. 2) Purchase of roll-up banner - £200

2024 Subscription Rates

The Committee are recommending that membership subscription rates for 2024 should remain unchanged at: Individual - £10, Joint £12.50, Organisation - £15

At the end of 2022 membership stood at 196 (2021 – 196) made up of: Individuals: 137 (2021 – 140) Organisations: 59 (2021 – 56)

Election of Trustees and Officers

Currently there are eight Trustees. It is a requirement that at each AGM one third of the Trustees shall stand down and can offer themselves for re-election and it is usual that those who have been longest in office retire, though can be re-elected.

For the year 2023 the following Trustees will retire and all have confirmed that they are willing to be nominated for re-election:

David Barton: Nominated by David Anderson, Seconded by Judith Mills

Jeremy Lodge: Nominated by David Anderson, Seconded by David Barton

Adrian Gray: Nominated by David Anderson, Seconded by David Barton

The following trustees remain in office: David Anderson, Bob Massey, Chris Weir, Judith Mills and Sarah Seaton

There are three Officers (Chair, Secretary and Treasurer) who stand down each year and can offer themselves for re-election. They have all confirmed that they are willing to be nominated for re-election.
