Achievements and Performance

SORP reference
Summary of the main
achievements of the
charity, identifying the
difference the charity’s
work has made to the
circumstances of its
beneficiaries and any wider
benefits to society as a
whole.
Para 1.20 The band gave a number of performances
throughout the year at various types of
events, organised by both the band and third
parties, to large public audiences. This
includes events with a long-running history
in the community such as Emley Show,
annual Remembrance events in Clayton
West, Emley, and Cleckheaton, and the
annual carol service at St Michael’s Church,
Emley, which sold out within 5 days. The
band continues to be in high demand for
events throughout the year, especially in the
Christmas period.
On the contest stage the band attended the
National Brass Band Championships of
Great Britain in Cheltenham in September
2024, the first time the band had qualified in
12 years. We also achieved a placing of 4th
in the 2ndSection at the Yorkshire Areas;
this result was high enough to give us
promotion to the 1stSection for the first time
in our history.
Our main fundraising event, Emley Real Ale
Festival, was extremely successful and well-
attended throughout the weekend, building
the band’s connection with the local
community and contributing to our financial
reserves.
The band continues to offer an environment
in which its members can enjoy the hobby of

brass banding, with the commensurate positive effects on their wellbeing (for detailed research on the positive wellbeing benefits of playing in brass bands see e.g. https://doi.org/10.3389/fpsyg.2019.01176).

Financial Review

Financial Review
Review of the charity’s
financial position at the end
of the period
Para 1.21 The charity maintains a healthy financial
position, with income rising significantly in
2024/25 compared to the previous period
(£20,462 vs. £15,638), driven primarily by
an increase in sponsorships/donations
received, as well as more income through
membership contributions and concert fees.
Combined with a return to normal
expenditure levels following significant
bandroom maintenance costs incurred in
2023/24, the band saw a surplus of
£2638.51 over the accounting period.
Statement explaining the
policy for holding reserves
stating why they are held
Para 1.22 Emley Brass Band has some obligations as
a result of, for example, owning the band
room, which would need to be covered if it
was wound up. A minimum level of
reserves of £1,500 has been agreed to
cover these costs. Significant reserves are
kept to cover any significant maintenance
costs to the bandroom should they arise.
