AUG 2020
Howard remotely repaired the Synology NAS server at Siavonga High School, Zambia. He also gave online support to our technical team in Lusaka.
SEP 2020
We raised money from individual donors to send out 15 non-contact digital thermometers to the solar schools.
Howard carried out training in Python and Scratch via Zoom.
NOV 2020
Through a campaign via gofundme and a generous individual donation we raised £1860. Teachers who had worked well on the programming course were rewarded with a Raspberry Pi computer each for their school. We used additional money to buy SSD drives for some of the laptops we sent out earlier.
JAN 2021
Training with Calc started – again via Zoom. Howard also set up a WhatsApp group for Science teachers which has proved a very useful forum for exchanging ideas and materials.
FEB 2021
We were awarded a grant from Wales for Africa for £5184. This is for the purchase of handwashing stations, soap and sanitisers and masks. Also for a mobile router for each school to make it easier to access internet for Zoom sessions.
MAR 2021
NAQEZ (National Action for Quality Education in Zambia- an influential organisation of educational professionals) visited some of the schools we’d helped in Monze and gave a glowing report of the usefulness of the resources. During March, we had submitted an application to UKAID small charities fund to equip three additional rural schools with solar power and computers.
APR 2021
With £3000 grant from Didymus Charity and additional GSS funds we used Munuhya Solar to install solar panels in Siamwiinga Primary School and we set up a hub of Raspberry Pi PCs and a Raspberry Pi server delivering RACHEL (Remote Area Community Hotspot for Education and Learning) learning resources.
The school reported that its 354 pupils have benefitted greatly from: free access to technology: access to information for their projects in school based assessment: due to contact with real things (computers), motivation and improved attendance in during classes: improved practical time for technology studies. Teachers have continued their professional development by using the TESSA modules (Teacher Education in Sub-Saharan Africa).
MAY 2021
UKAID cancelled their whole round of funding due to Government cuts. Applications to Oakdale Trust and Coles Trust were unsuccessful as both are concentrating on UK causes.
Applications were submitted to Chrysalis Trust for £8500 to equip a school as a training hub and Michael Cornish Trust for £1000 for science equipment.
JUN 2021
We were saddened to hear of the death of beekeeping trainer, Phillip Sikilwa, who had worked on our behalf with a womens’ group and four schools in Siavonga.
Howard carried out Zoom training on Intermediate Spreadsheets. Several teachers used their skills to record their pupils’ results over a period of three years.
JUL 2021
Applications to Chrysalis Trust and Michael Cornish Trust were both unsuccessful.
We started planning a new project involving a teacher and ex-teacher from Pentrehafod School, Swansea. It will aim to train Zambian teachers in the skills and techniques to use to improve the confidence and well being of all pupils but especially girls. It will also involve partnering with the Future is Female, Zambia, who will work with local communities and provide strong female role models to visit schools.
We’ve been donated 50 PCs and monitors and would like to disperse them to needy causes in Wales for free or for a small donation to our funds. 10 have been donated to Health Help International for use in their UK drop-in centre.
AUG 2021
We have started on the Advance Light Mentoring Course run by Hub Cymru Africa. We hope it will help us strengthen and grow our organisation. We submitted an application to Wales and Africa for solar power and a suite of Raspberry Pi computers to be used as a teacher training centre at Sianyoolo School outside school times. It was unsuccessful but we will continue to submit elsewhere.
The latest Zoom courses we are running are based on LibreOffice Writer. Using Simple Screen Recorder, Zambian teachers are working with Howard to produce short video clips illustrating each topic.
