TRUSTEES’ REPORT

The trustees present their first report along with the financial statements of the charity for the year ended 31[st ] July 2021. The financial statements have been prepared in accordance with the accounting policies set out on page 16 and comply with the charity’s constitution and applicable law.

TRUSTEES

The trustee’s names on page 2 have served throughout the year. Appointment of trustees is governed by the Constitution of the CIO. The Board of Trustees is authorised to appoint new trustees to fill vacancies arising through resignation or death of an existing trustee.

AIMS AND OBJECTS

Juvenis is a youth development organisation. The charity exists to act as a resource hub for children and young people across London, aged 10-25. Operating from its principal location in the heart of Brixton, South London, the charity provides advice, assistance, mentoring, recreational and educational activities for public benefit.

The object of the charity is to help young people, especially but not exclusively through leisure time activities, so as to develop their capabilities that they may grow to full maturity as individuals and members of society .

In developing strategies, setting objectives, and undertaking activities, the trustees have given careful consideration to the Charity Commissions general guidance on public benefit, and continue to achieve its object through the Education and Poverty programmes that facilitate:

A youth resource hub that provides individualised face to face support for young people, so that they are better able to address and tackle barriers that are facing them, such as, housing, financial problems/debt and family problems
The main programme, Positive Change, is a range of bespoke educational outreaches that help young people develop their skills and capabilities, and is designed and delivered with the aim of them being able to participate in society as independent, mature, and responsible individuals; activities include:
Partnering with other youth organisations to recruit and train young people to organise activities at local youth clubs
Build relationships with disadvantaged young people who are involved or at risk of offending and furthest away from employment
Facilitate small groups of young people per year to develop their skills by starting up their own community project

AIMS AND OBJECTS CONT.

Employability and enterprise initiatives to enable them to gain suitable employment through the delivery of personal growth and development workshops on topics that enable young people to build the confidence, selfesteem, and motivation with the aim of them avoiding being a NEET (Not education, employment and/or training) statistic; activities include:
Youth justice workshops in partnership with practitioners and employment brokers (like recruitment agencies) to address social issues and help young people become job-ready
Identify referral routes for young people to gain employment and/or training through partner programmes
Provide employment support including assistance with interviews, CV writing & functional skills

GOVERNANCE

The charity is governed by 4 trustees and managed by 1 full-time employed Manager and another full-time employee. The charity has a further 5 volunteers who support its activities.

In developing strategies, setting objectives and undertaking activities, the trustees have given careful consideration to the Charity Commissions general guidance on public benefit.

ACHIEVEMENTS AND PERFORMANCE

The Difference We Made: Impact Report, 2020-21

Our impact report sets out the positive changes we’ve made to the lives of vulnerable young people and their families in Lambeth.

We supported over 300 vulnerable children, young people and their families this year.

In this year’s impact report, we have focussed on the evaluation of our work on our main projects: DIVERT Youth, Raising the Game, Milk & Honey Bees and our partnership with Building Young Brixton.

Many of our projects work with young people who are experiencing some of the most complex problems we see in our communities; despite the challenges of this work, I am encouraged that we are consistently delivering positive outcomes even during a global pandemic.

I hope you enjoy learning about our work helping hundreds of children and young people, and we look forward to doing better work together in the future.

Who are we:

Juvenis has been in operation for over 5 years offering bespoke support and personal development for children and young people involved in or at risk of entering the youth justice system to turn around their lives and (re)engage with education, training, or employment.

Projects to date:

DIVERT Youth

In October 2021, we gained funding from the Youth Endowment Fund DIVERT Youth to continue working with young people aged 10-17 who also presented in police custody. Founded on the same principles as DIVERT, this programme provides tailored intervention and support for young people at risk of negative outcomes associated with serious violent crimes.

This year we incorporated a new element into the programme by offering therapeutic intervention via Partisan to young people and their families. We have worked closely with Impact for Urban Health and Global Fund for Children to bring in a consultant/advisor to enable us to make this therapeutic service part of our core offer going forward.

Raising The Game: The Norwood School

Funded through The Walcot Foundation and working in partnership with The Norwood School and Project YANA this project aimed to address the academic attainment gap and disproportionately high exclusion rates that Black Caribbean pupils in the borough face. We supported over 30 young people as they transitioned from primary to secondary education so they felt safe and secure, providing a link between the certainty of their existing school and the brave new world of their new one.

The ‘Raising the Game’ initiative is based on extensive research running in Lambeth schools to improve outcomes at all key stages, to raise aspirations and to reduce exclusions for Black Caribbean pupils who underachieve in relation to their peers nationally and locally.

Milk & Honey Bees

Milk and Honey Bees is an expressive safe space that allows young women and girls to flourish and take ownership of H.E.R (Healing, Empowerment and Resilience) through 1:1 sessions and creative group projects.

The aim is to enable young women and girls, who are often deemed as hard to engage, to create a safe space to express themselves creatively and the chance to feel supported and access opportunities, plus gain skills to navigate in society. Milk and Honey Bees supported 30 young women on their journey of healing whilst equipping them with social, employment and life skills that enable them to mobilise in their communities.

Working closely with Sony UK this year will allow us to bring a new project to the forefront of our work with MHB’s. Young people will be learning songwriting, production, photography, styling, music business, project management, business and finance, marketing, content creation, and CV & interview workshops. Further sessions focused on mindfulness, breathwork, self-love, reprogramming our brains, affirmations, chakra work, group exercise, goal setting, healthy relationships, and so much more.

Case Study:

Jordan was just 14 when he was arrested and referred to the Divert Youth programme. Since then, supported by his mentor Godwin, he’s been making positive choices and is now enjoying school and a series of extracurricular activities. Here, Jordan and Godwin talk about their relationship, Jordan’s hopes for the future – and FIFA.

Jordan

So there was an incident. I don’t really want to talk about why, but I ended up getting arrested. That was when the police told me about Divert. They said it was a good programme, so when I got referred, I wanted to see what it was about, to see if it could benefit me. I went into it with an open mind. This was about three months ago now.

The first meeting I had with Godwin was here – I came in with my auntie. After that I would just meet him by myself, and we’ve met every week since then.

The first time I met him by myself, we went to get food and after that we were talking. He was asking me, what do I want to do? He asked me what I was into. I told him I liked rugby, acting and modelling, so he started looking into it. He’s been looking for rugby teams for me, I’m going to be doing a play and he’s helping me to find a modelling agency. He’s helping me with my future.

Godwin

I think that first meeting went really well. For a lot of the young people we work with, the relationship at the beginning can be rocky – it takes a while to build up trust. But with Jordan, from the get-go he was open to new ideas, and that’s what I think has been so exciting about mentoring him. I knew he’d be open to my suggestions, to trying new things. From the start we found a nice groove.

Jordan

I’m in Year 10 now, coming up to GCSEs, so Godwin asked me if I need any help with learning. I said it would be good to get some extra classes for Maths and English, so he’s helping me with that. School’s actually great right now, I’m enjoying it. I like BTEC Music, PE and Drama most. I just really like acting, playing a role. I’d like to be in movies or TV shows one day.

Godwin

It’s been a few months now since Jordan got referred to us, and he’s been such a pleasure to work with. He’s always had a positive mindset on him, always been enthusiastic, right from the start.

I think our first few sessions were around friends and family. We spoke about different types of friends and what type of friend you think you are in the group. Jordan told me he’s the one that does the jokes, and I can tell you that’s true!

Our journey has involved different things at different times. The early stages were mainly about building up our relationship, but we also talked about careers, about things like friendship groups, being your own person and peer pressure. Then we started playing FIFA – and I want it to be on record that I’m better than him!

Jordan

That isn’t true.

Godwin

Ok, ok, he’s actually quite good.

Jordan

That first time when I met him without my auntie, he just seemed trustworthy. I felt like I could talk to him about stuff, and it was always just relaxed. Playing FIFA, having jokes. He makes me laugh! But working with him has also given me confidence to meet new people.

Now, I just feel more mature. I feel smarter than before. He’s helped me to work out who are good friends, and who aren’t.

Godwin

I think his confidence is massively up. He’s become much more sure of himself through our conversations and I’ve seen that maturity just grow in him. The key things I was meant to

work with him on were in terms of behaviour and personal development and I’ve seen those changes taking place.

With school, for example, I don’t think there’s even a problem anymore, so we’re just trying to work on his grades now, and I’m signposting him to a tutoring organisation to support him with that.

He’s near the end of his mentorship now, and I’m really proud of how far he’s come. To be honest, I think the sky’s the limit for him because there are just so many areas he can flourish in.

Jordan

Godwin has always given me really good advice, and he’s just a strong role model – he’s inspiring. And he’s good at FIFA. Actually no, that last one’s a joke!

The whole thing’s been a really great experience. My auntie is really happy about all of this, and I know she’s proud of me and what I’m achieving. To anyone who gets offered this, I’d say go for it – and enjoy it while it lasts, because it goes fast.

When I think about the future, I know I like acting, I know I like music, I know I like modelling – but playing rugby is what I love the most. It’s what I’m best at, and I think I’m good enough to go pro, so my goal is to play professional rugby, maybe for a team like Harlequins one day. That would be really great.

Finally, I’d like to thank the children and young people, it is our privilege to work both with and for them. Their stories of resilience and tenacity continue to inspire me and remind everyone at Juvenis how important it is that we do all that we can to ensure children and young people are given the opportunity for a brighter future.

Our vision is still as important as ever ‘a future where all young Londoners have more than one chance to fulfil their potential.

FINANCIAL REVIEW

For the year ended 31[st] July 2021, the trustees consider the financial position of the charity to be in line with expectations.

The charity received funding from several organisations for their development and the delivery of their work:

LB of Lambeth - Divert Youth (RF) Network for Social Change The London Community Foundation Citibank Compass School Donation Guys and St Thomas LB of Lambeth EIPS Sony Music Springall Mattel The Global Fund for Children The J Van Mars Foundation The London Community Foundation (UF) The Norwood School

The funding was used to benefit disadvantaged young Londoners at risk of criminal involvement by enabling them to improve their life chances and contribute positively to their communities.

RESERVES POLICY

The Trustees have considered the level of reserves they wish to retain appropriate to the charity’s needs. This is based on the charity’s size and the level of commitments held. The Trustees aim to ensure the charity will be able to continue to fulfil their charitable objectives.

RISK REVIEW

The trustees conduct periodic reviews of the major risks to which the charity is exposed and systems and procedures to manage those risks identified are implemented so as to minimise any potential impact on the charity should any of those risks materialise.

YEAR ENDED 31 JULY 2021

Law applicable to charities in England and Wales requires the trustees to prepare financial statements for each financial year which give a true and fair view of the the year. In preparing those financial statements, the trustees are required to:

a) select suitable accounting policies and apply them consistently;

b) make judgements and estimates that are reasonable and prudent;

c) state whether applicable accounting standards and statements of recommended practice have been followed, subject to any departures disclosed and explained in the financial statements;
d) Prepare the financial statements on the going concern basis unless it is inappropriate to presume that the charity will continue in operation.

The trustees are responsible for keeping accounting records which disclose with reasonable accuracy at any time the financial position of the charity and enable them to ensure that the financial statements comply with the Charities Act . They are also responsible for safeguarding the assets of the charity and hence for taking reasonable steps for the prevention and detection of fraud and other irregularities.

Independent Examiners Report

I report on the accounts of the charity for the period ended 31[st] July 2021 which are set out on pages 15 to 20.

Responsibility of Examiner

The charity’s trustees consider that an audit is not required for this year (under section 144(2) of the Charities Act 2011 and that an independent examination is needed. It is my responsibility to:

Examine accounts carried out under section 145 of the 2011 Act
follow all the applicable Directions given by the Charity Commission under section 145(5)(b) of the Act; and
state whether particular matters have come to my attention.

Since the charity’s gross income exceeded £250,000, I confirm that I, the signed examiner, am qualified to undertake the examination because I am a Chartered Accountant and a member of The Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales, which is one of the listed bodies.

Basis of independent examiner's report

The examination was carried out under section 145 of the 2011 Act and the examination has been conducted in accordance with the Directions given by the Commission.

An examination includes a review of the accounting records kept by the company and a comparison of the accounts presented with those records. It also includes consideration of any unusual items or disclosures in the accounts and seeking explanations from the trustees concerning any such matters. The procedures undertaken do not provide all the evidence that would be required in an audit, and consequently, I do not express an audit opinion on the accounts.

Independent examiner's statement

In connection with my examination, no matter has come to my attention which gives me reasonable cause to believe that in any material respect the trustees have not met the requirements to ensure that:

a. proper accounting records have not been kept in accordance with section 130 of the Charities Act 2011; and
b. the accounts do not accord with the accounting records Or
c. the accounts do not comply with the requirements of the 2008 Regulations regarding the form and content of charity accounts
d. other than any requirement that the accounts give a ‘true and fair’ view which is not a matter considered as part of an independent examination.

1. ACCOUNTING POLICIES

The principal accounting policies adopted in the preparation of the financial statements are as follow:

1.1 Basis of accounting

The financial statements have been prepared under the historical cost convention and in accordance with the Charities SORP 2015 based on FRS102 (effective January 2019).

1.2 Incoming resources

Donations and similar incoming resources are accounted for on receipt by the charity, any pledges of income also gift aid refunds are accrued in the accounting period that they arise.

1.3 Investment income

Investment income consists of interest received from saving and deposit accounts at the bank.

1.4 Resources expended

Resources expended are included in the Statement of Financial Activities on an accruals basis, inclusive of any VAT that cannot be recovered.

1.5 Fund accounting

Funds held by the charity are:

Restricted - these are funds which can only be used in accordance with the charitable specific purpose;
Unrestricted (general funds) - these are funds which can be used in accordance with the charitable objects at the discretion of the trustees.

2. RELATED PARTY TRANSACTIONS

The charity was under the control of the Trustee throughout the current year. No transactions with related parties were undertaken such as that required disclosure.
