Objectives and Activities
| SORP reference | ||
|---|---|---|
| Summary of the purposes of the charity as set out in its governing document |
Para 1.17 | To promote social inclusion for the public benefit of older people, over 50 years of age, by preventing them from becoming socially excluded, relieving the needs of those people and assisting them to integrate into society through the provision of a premises in which they can meet jointly or individually undertake and share creative, physical, social and recreational activities of their choice. |
| Summary of the main activities in relation to those purposes for the public benefit, in particular, the activities, projects or services identified in the accounts. |
Para 1.17 and 1.19 |
The provision of our space allows older people to meet and undertake practical projects and activities which keep their brains active. The social interaction with their peers provides an opportunity for them to engage with others in a familiar and relaxed environment. The group has undertaken specific projects for local groups and organisations. |
| Statement confirming whether the trustees have had regard to the guidance issued by the Charity Commission on public benefit |
Para 1.18 | The Trustees confirm they understand the guidance relating to public benefit. We believe there is a need for our group. The section of society we focus on e.g. primarily older men has been shown in research as less likely to engage in wider social activity. A survey of the population of Stratford upon Avon showed that 25% of the residents were older people. |

Achievements and Performance
SORP reference
| Summary of the main achievements of the charity, identifying the difference the charity’s work has made to the circumstances of its beneficiaries and any wider benefits to society as a whole. Para 1.20 The objectives that support our key purpose are: 1. Promote social inclusion and well being through friendships and social interaction within the group, 2. Provide opportunities for members to share, and learn new skills, 3. Build relationships with groups and individuals in the local community which allow us to achieve our aims 4. Provide a permanent base for Mens Shed. 5. Provide a credible income stream, Achievements against our objectives: 1. As previously stated we provide a premises/ workshop space where older people meet up to five times a week and engage in woodworking and other activities. We undertake small personal projects or other larger projects for local groups and charities. Some of the items are sold to raise funds for the charity. The group has up to 35 members at present some of whom meet three times a week, others less often. Anecdotal evidence we have gathered from within the group shows our members benefit from the social activity and interactions with others. Some members of the group have formed firm friendships and meet outside the times of the formal group 2. A percentage of our membership have been professional trades people, some are experienced in DIY and they share their knowledge and experience with others in the group. 3. We have been particularly successful developing relationships with other charities and groups. We are now established in our new workshop within a community hub operated by the Stratford Town Trust. In return for rent free accommodation we undertake small projects, such as providing shelving, notice boards etc. within the building for the Trust and other charities based in the building. We have in the past, in co-operation with the Shakespeare Lions, constructed a Santa’s sleigh for their Christmas charity collections. We undertake maintenance projects on this Santa’s sleigh. We also participated in the collections. 4. The Mens Shed’s, home in a Charity Hub created by the Stratford Town Trust provides the security which we need for the future. 5. There was no shed activity between March 2020 and the end of the year due to Covid-19 restrictions. This resulted in no income from sale of goods and no other income apart from members’s subscriptions. |
