Achievements and Performance

SORP reference
Summary of the main
achievements of the charity,
identifying the difference the
charity’s work has made to
the circumstances of its
beneficiaries and any wider
benefits to society as a
whole.
Para 1.20 This year saw the eagerly awaited delivery
of the delayed opening celebration for the
Freedom Skatepark & Youth Centre in Bull
Bay, Kingston, Jamaica – Flipping Youth’s
flagship initiative. The event was
postponed several times due to Covid-19
related restrictions, but we were thankfully
able to come together in October 2022 to
celebrate the achievement of all project
partners in bringing Jamaica’s first
skatepark to fruition.
In the run-up to the event, Flipping Youth
funded some renovations to the skatepark,
including an upgrade to one of the toilets to
make it accessible for wheelchair users,
the commissioning of a local youth artist to
create a ‘Freedom’ mural and paying some
of the existing skatepark staff additional
funds to paint sections of the skatepark,
bringing pops of colour and vibrancy ahead
of the celebration event.
The event was attended by founding
partners, project donors, children and
young people who use the facility, key
community representatives, along with the
Minister of State for Culture, Gender,
Entertainment and Sport. The event
consisted of skateboard demonstrations
from the local riders, live music, dance,
refreshments and some inspirational words
from representatives of the Freedom
Skatepark Foundation. The event allowed
all of the founding partners, including
Flipping Youth, to take stock of what we
had achieved by working together over a 4
year campaign period to make the
Freedom Skatepark a reality.
Whilst in Jamaica, Flipping Youth launched
a new youth entrepreneurship programme
‘Just Dweet’, aimed at helping young
people get their business ideas off the
ground. The programme was aimed at
young people aged 15-30 who live in the
Kingston and St Andrew region and are
users of the Freedom Skatepark. 6 young
people successfully gained a place on the
programme and attended a workshop in
Kingston to learn about the basics of
starting a business, including guidance on
creating a business plan, elevator pitch,
‘SWOT’ analysis and understanding your
‘USP’. The workshop finished by
supporting the participants to register their

businesses online with the Companies Office of Jamaica. The young people’s business ideas ranged from clothing brands, to a social media operated skate shop and an ethical ceramics company.

Financial Review

Financial Review
Review of the charity’s
financial position at the end
of the period
Para 1.21 The financial position of Flipping Youth as
the year closes is sound and sufficient to
carry out our intended activities.
Our remaining funds are restricted towards
funding the ongoing development of
Freedom Skatepark and the associated
‘Just Dweet’ business launch programme.
Statement explaining the
policy for holding reserves
stating why they are held
Para 1.22 Flipping Youth does not currently hold any
reserves.
Amount of reserves held Para 1.22 £0.00
Reasons for holding zero
reserves
Para 1.22 Flipping Youth is operated by a team of
volunteers who work remotely and meet
either online or in free of charge spaces,
meaning that there are no operational
overheads associated with staffing. All staff
have undertaken safeguarding training and
had DBS checks as part of their work with
young people outside of Flipping Youth.
Minor operational expenses are covered by
trustees personally. Trustees provide their
own IT technology to work on Flipping
Youth related activities, so there is no
requirement to purchase laptop computers
for staff.
Details of fund materially in
deficit
Para 1.24 None.
Explanation of any
uncertainties about the
charity continuing as a going
concern
Para 1.23 There are no current uncertainties
regarding Flipping Youth being able to
continue. We plan on maintaining our
current strategy and continuing to support
our primary objective, with no plans to
expand or take on further responsibility.
