Ava Hunt Theatre: Report of the Trustees for the year ending 31[st] March 2022
The Trustees are pleased to present their annual report together with statement of financial accounts for the purposes of the Charities commission.
Purpose and activities
In shaping our objectives for the year and planning our activities, the trustees have considered the Charity Commission’s guidance on public benefit, including the guidance on public benefit and fee charging. AHT’s purpose is to advance education in the arts for the public benefit primarily throughout the East Midlands and nationally by producing educational workshops, theatre performances, and training by creating:
-
New theatre for young people to explore areas of personal, social and health education, citizenship in the school curriculum.
-
Performances, workshops and training to a wide range of users with little or no access to high quality arts experiences due to either rural isolation, social deprivation, or because of being from a marginalised community/group or sector of society i.e. in relation to sexual orientation, disability, class, religion, ethnicity or gender.

2. Secretary’s Report
Ava Hunt reported that 2021/22 had been a good year for the company in respect of projects, workshops and recognition. The ACE funding AHT received for the project in early February 2021 was carried over to fund and support:
Destinies a co-creation piece developed by young people with care experience, and unaccompanied asylum seekers. The project worked closely with Derbyshire County Council Virtual School Creative Mentors, Sinfonia Viva and Orchestra Live. Despite still being affected and impacted by Covid restrictions, the company was able to spend three developmental days on Destinies during April further integrating animation into the production style, to produce a final draft of the script by Lin Coghlan. A further two days were used in May to work with the young people develop further songs and recorded material with Sinfonia Viva. We then went into a week-long filming period in July.

There was some last minute casting due to Covid, and that for some young people who had moved from the area. Destinies was originally started in October 2019, therefore for some young people circumstances changed dramatically over the Covid period. A screen of Destinies was hosted by Derby Theatre when we were invited to the Culture Cares Conference with many of the young people able to attend. AHT also delivered workshops on co-creation approaches disseminating best practice to practitioners, charities and teaching bodies. On April 6[th] 2022 Destinies won its second award, receiving Derby Mainframe Creativity for Good. This was an incredible achievement for the company.
Some of the young people and foster families were in attendance at QUAD to receive the award.
The confidence and contribution from young people across the project not only informed but directed the project in directions that I could not have possibly anticipated when we first started the project.
The judges highly commended Destinies for the impact on young people’s lives.

Workshops – Values and Citizenship workshops were delivered across Derbyshire to young people aged 16-18 years old at six Adult Education Centres and the Eco Centre in Wirksworth for young people with care experience. These workshops were devised and delivered by a team of four actors/freelances. Comments from young people and teaching staff from Derbyshire Adult Education Children’s Services were very positive and we are hoping that this relationship continues to develop.
Real for Me – scripts were created from verbatim accounts of young people’s thoughts, opinions and feelings about Relationships and Sex Education which were originally developed back in 2019. Real for Me was filmed and is available to schools to support teachers delivering schemes of work that explore consent, and social media. The project was launched on 24[th] June 2021 which is National RSE Day.
3. Governance:
Ava Hunt Theatre is a Charitable Incorporated Company and registered charity. It is governed by a constitution, which was passed on March 2016.
Trustees meet regularly throughout the year and due to continuing Covid restrictions meetings are held on zoom.
In March 2022 we received Rafia Hussain’s resignation from the Trustees. The company and board expressed gratitude and appreciation to Rafia for her contribution to the company and wished her every success for the future. AHT will undertake to recruit new Trustees that continue to reflect the diverse work that the company undertakes.
Finance Officer Pat Mee is able to attend all meetings and provide a full and accurate breakdown of project budgets, and projected cash flows etc. Pat and Ava manage day to day payments invoice payments on-line together.

Policies
The company continued to work closely with Trustees to ensure that all policies are reviewed regularly. Funded by ACE New Inspirations an EDI policy was ratified and has been operational since September 2021. The Safeguarding is currently under review.
Volunteers
As part of the companies continued membership of NCVO (National Council Volunteers) AHT continues to receive valuable support from volunteers. Due to the scaled down nature of the company’s work throughout 2021, this has been a reduced number. Many of the volunteers are either Undergraduates or MA students from University of Derby who are studying applied theatre and applied drama. Students value the learning opportunities to work alongside professional artists, and the company ensures that all compliances with DBS and Safeguarding training are fully met. Opportunities for volunteers to reflect on their experiences and learning on the projects is also important.
4. Financial Report
The ACE council grant: New Inspirations received last year (2021), was in advance with artistic work not being fully completed until November at the Culture Cares Conference. At the end of last year this created a £14,000 surplus which was carried forward. However, due to some small reserves, the year ending March 2022 will show a balance on the bank accounts of approximately: £4,695.
Trustees recognise how difficult it is for the company at this time as Arts Council grant processes have changed dramatically, and two applications for funding have not generated income.
Finance Officer, Pat Mee has worked closely with Ava Hunt to establish projected company costs anticipating overheads for the year ahead. A full review of these costs will be necessary to reduce expenditure to a minimum to ensure that the company does not incur bank charges or go overdrawn. The company is project funded and therefore, time will need to be spent investing in new projects, funding applications and future planning/programming.
The year ahead will be challenging, but new opportunities for work and funding will be sought. The company’s reputation, the hard work of company members, freelancers, volunteers and the Trustees will all contribute to ensuring that company’s valuable work with young people is maintained and sustained through these difficult times.
