Report of the Trustees and Financial Statements for Spotlight YOPD (Registered Charity number 1165177)
1 April 2021 to 31 March 2022
Chairman’s Report
I am delighted to be able to present the Annual Report and Accounts for the year April 2021 to March 2022 - outlining significant progress made on several fronts.
This past year has seen us develop a new strategy with a focus on communications in line with the objects of the Charity.
The key audience members divide into:
-
People with YOPD (first and foremost)
-
Family Members and Carers
-
Healthcare Professionals
-
The General Public
-
Policymakers and Corporate sponsors
Our Research Panel, set up at the end of last year, has been put to good use. Charged with assessing the viability and suitability of research projects ahead of advertising them to our audience, the scope and interest has grown. Plans now include an Advisory Board where specialist input is required, particularly in regard to medical matters.
We were let down during the year by a partner we had hoped would provide us with a website and a CRM solution, following considerable trustees input. This was a disappointing set back; only recently have we been in a position to take a website live. We now find ourselves in a stronger position for the next year.
Our thanks go to Yvette Bordley of webyogi for reinstating a working website. On that note, please do visit our “Thank You” page to see all the people and groups who have helped us over the past year.
We are building a global network of advocates and researchers through and beyond our work with the World Parkinson Congress (WPC). We are delighted to have linked up with new YOPD charities and organisations across the globe - based in part on the Spotlight YOPD model. These new charity representatives include advocates from the Netherlands, the USA, Germany, Portugal and Japan.
We have also linked via these advocates with some of the more proactive researchers - and certainly those who understand the value of a positive patient/researcher working dynamic.
Our WPC survey project is under review - by ourselves. We have concerns that there is a risk that skewed information may result through capturing data on medication side-effects (rather than pure symptoms) and misdiagnosis. We are currently investigating more foolproof and creative means of gathering patient information.
Where possible we will always seek to complement the positive work of other advocates and charities. We are very positive about the current state of relations between the UK-based PD charities - and look forward to greater collaboration.
On a more local scale, we sent out a request for some office space for charity use in Rye. Jane Brook of “On tap networks ltd” offered a desk in a co-working space for our CEO and use of the office mailing address. We are looking forward to building on this relationship.
Page of 2 20
We signed up a partnership agreement with Able Label - an accessible clothing company. Spotlight YOPD will receive a small commission on any sales directed from our website. This is a new way of us generating funds - to sit alongside our established routes of Facebook Fundraising and Amazon Smile.
We have signed up for a new fundraising platform - Total Giving - in the wake of Virgin Money Giving, our previous fundraising platform.
I would particularly like to thank the small army of people who have helped us get this far - their ongoing support for the charity is hugely appreciated.
We are in an excellent position to build on our work so far - and have ambitions to present and have a proactive presence at the World Parkinson Congress in Barcelona in Summer 2023.
Mrs Nicola Cole, Chairman
Thank you to all our supporters

Introduction
The trustees present their report with the financial statements of the charity for the period 1 April 2021 to 31 March 2022.
Spotlight YOPD is a Charitable Incorporated Organisation (CIO) that is eligible for gift aid.
OBJECTIVES
The objects of the CIO are:
-
1) To promote health and to relieve those suffering from Young Onset Parkinson's Disease (YOPD) and to provide support both for such persons and their families;
-
2) To advance the education of the public (including scientific education) and raise awareness in all areas relating to Young Onset Parkinson's Disease.
Vision:
Shining a light on better living now with Young Onset Parkinson’s (YOPD) and researching for a brighter future.
Aims:
-
Ensure YOPD is recognised globally as a rare (often genetic) syndrome that requires focussed research.
-
Mobilise genetic testing ensuring YOPD patients have an effective diagnosis leading to better care.
-
Deliver campaigns so YOPD families have access to research, innovative treatments and other emotional, practical and financial support.
-
Have YOPD recognised in guidelines enabling holistic disease management at every stage of life.
-
Accelerate diagnosis and empower patients and families to take control of the condition.
The trustees had due regard to the Charity Commission's guidance on public benefit, ensuring that the Aims and Strategy are aligned with the objectives, reviewed at Board meetings. The risk register also helps to focus the attention of the Board of Trustees.

ACHIEVEMENT AND PERFORMANCE
The pandemic continued into the beginning of our new year - with restrictions finally lifted towards the end. Our CEO, Gaynor Edwards, worked predominantly online and made the most of her global and UK-based networks to get the messages out onto a global stage.
There has been recent recognition that women have been under-represented within the Parkinson's community and their specific challenges poorly understood. This year there has been an effort to redress the balance and this started with Gaynor leading a webinar on hormones for a Young Onset Parkinson's women's group discussion for the Davis Phinney Foundation.
Gaynor was interviewed by Unilad online magazine with a focus on raising awareness of YOPD - to tie in with Parkinson’s Awareness Month in April 2021. This article can still be found at https://www.unilad.co.uk/featured/parkinsons-disease-doesnt-just-affect-the-elderlyyounger-people-can-get-it-too
Parkie Radio (an online station) interviews many people with Parkinsons, researchers and clinicians on matters of the day. Gaynor participated on three occasions, once as a guest presenter on The Two Mikes podcast (USA) and once Gaynor was interviewed by the two Mikes on female challenges with YOPD. On a third occasion Gaynor was interviewed by DJ Jonny in the UK, giving Spotlight YOPD coverage on both sides of the pond.
Gaynor and Dr Jon Stamford were interviewed by Lisa Beaumont who wrote a profile piece on Spotlight YOPD for the Neuro Rehab Times.
Throughout the year, Gaynor maintained her role as Co-Chair of the WPC (World Parkinson Congress) Young Onset working group running regular meetings bringing together global representatives into a single conversation. One of the initiatives in progress is to create a handbook for YOPD women to be launched at WPC 2023, called “In her shoes”. This has been discussed with other executive committee members at the executive meeting and was well received.
Gaynor undertook a number of events and meetings to further knowledge of YOPD. These included:
• Dancing with Parkinsons - a national initiative to encourage movement and dance. It allows people with Parkinson’s to sample different dance styles, get active and improve their mental health.
- Davis Phinney Foundation Women's Group on the topic of relationships and how this changes once one of the partners receives a Young Onset diagnosis.
Page of 6 20
• A meeting in support of Elizabeth Gordon - who is the CEO of one of our alliance charities, Parkinson's Care and Support, with the University of Kent.
-
Spotlight YOPD took a stand at Sport Parkinson's inaugural Try-athalon.
-
Guest speaker for a Parkinson’s group in Oswestry talking about Young Onset diagnosis.
• Made contact with Kerri Evans, the head of disability at Wrexham Football club. Ongoing conversations about walking football (Gaynor introduced Paul Nicholls) and the use of an elephant badge to highlight hidden conditions as a pin badge project.
The relationship with Parkinson's UK (PUK) has improved over the last year, in part due to the new CEO, Caroline Rassell. We have a number of areas where we are actively working together and Caroline involves Spotlight YOPD where we can add value.
We have maintained a relationship with PD Avengers through attendance at their regular meetings. We participate in any projects that are aligned with the aims of Spotlight YOPD and to share our objectives.
A key fundraising partnership was cemented with Able Label who provide accessible clothing, suitable for people with YOPD.
We have an ongoing project to provide help for those diagnosed with YOPD by working with a partner company to provide support in making applications for personal independence payments; educate the government agencies on YOPD; and get a seat at DWP boards and think tanks. We anticipate we can create a relationship of mutual support.

FUTURE PLANS
Our future plans are centred around our Aims, namely:
• Ensure YOPD is recognised globally as a rare (often genetic) syndrome that requires focussed research.
• Mobilise genetic testing ensuring YOPD patients have an effective diagnosis leading to better care.
• Deliver campaigns so YOPD families have access to research, innovative treatments and other emotional, practical and financial support.
-
Have YOPD recognised in guidelines enabling holistic disease management at every stage.
-
Accelerate diagnosis and empower patients and families to take control of the condition.
As a small charity we focus our effort through education, communication and engagement through partners and affiliates.
We will continue to accept speaking appointments and invitations to events where we can share information and influence people.
We are working on a training programme to educate medical professionals on the challenges faced by those diagnosed with Young Onset Parkinson’s and how they might help in a constructive way.
We plan to make the most of our website, putting up useful links, articles and information. For example, we are currently working on a Patient Charter which we will use to raise awareness of the needs of those with Young Onset Parkinson’s.
Our CEO, Gaynor Edwards has been working for some years with the World Parkinson Congress and Co-chairs a YOPD working group. It is our ambition for Gaynor to present at the 2023 World Parkinson Congress on the main stage to highlight Young Onset Parkinsons.
We have been working on a project to enable those diagnosed with YOPD to receive a full genome analysis and hope to be able to announce partners by the end of the year to make this project a reality.
Further partnerships for fundraising and to raise our profile and get our message to decision makers.

RISK
Managing our risks is a very important aspect of our work as a charity. Being aware of those areas that may adversely impact on our vision, mission, aims and objectives is not just good governance and good leadership and management, it also allows us to take action and proactively mitigate and improve in our work.
The charity’s risk register has been in place since 2020. Risks are discussed regularly at the Board. The management of risk continues to be a dynamic process. New risks are discussed and added, and existing risks are reviewed with their actions monitored.
During 2021 to 2022 we have seen a shift in risk scores as the charity has developed and continued its work. We have strengthened our strategy and communication management, and we have developed the website which is ready to go live following sign-off by the Board. This risk has therefore reduced from a score of 12 to a score of 3.
As our risk management has matured, we have undertaken risk management training for the Trustees. This has enhanced understanding and improved our ability to identify and manage the risks we face. The three top risks that the charity faces have changed from last year with the website risk score now low, and the volunteer training moving to third position.
The top three risks are:
Finance
There is a risk the charity's finances may deplete resulting in lack of money to undertake our charitable aims. The risk score is 9 – Moderate. To mitigate this risk we have robust financial controls in place with monthly reporting and discussion and actions in place. As we are now spending, our immediate plans are to set a budget and raise funds to support our work.
Sustainability
There is a risk that as we rely exclusively on volunteer support for fundraising, our growth may not be efficient and sustainable. The risk score is 8 – Moderate. We plan to implement a robust fundraising strategy to minimise this risk.
Volunteer Training
There is a risk that volunteers and other officers of Spotlight YOPD have insufficient training in relation to the confidentiality of personal data. The risk score is 6 – Low. We have in place robust induction and training for volunteers we may recruit going forward.
Page of 9 20
STRUCTURE, GOVERNANCE AND MANAGEMENT
Governing document
The charity is controlled by its governing document, a constitution of a Charitable Incorporated Organisation, dated 15 January 2016.
Recruitment and appointment of new trustees
We have recruited three new trustees over the last 12 months, all of whom brought key skills identified during our review of the skills and experience requirements.
-
In looking for new trustees we first looked at the skills mix we required and identified the skills and experience we required.
-
We advertised through two channels, The Chairman’s Network and LinkedIn. We also asked the trustees to tap their own networks.
-
The CEO and Chairman interviewed all those who applied.
FINANCIAL REVIEW AND RESERVES
The trustees have adopted the provisions of Accounting and Reporting by Charities: Statement of Recommended Practice applicable to charities preparing their accounts in accordance with the Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland (FRS 102) (effective 1 January 2015) and also in accordance with the requirements of the Charities Act 2011.
The reserves (all of which are free) at the end of the year were £3989 representing approximately six months budgeted expenditure. The trustees believe that this is the right level for the charity, given the expected increase in activity in the new financial year.
