Diabetes is a highly prevalent condition that
has a major impact on the heath of the
population. A complex network of
professionals and local organisations work
to achieve the best possible outcomes for
patients with diabetes, but the opportunities
for them to meet each other, raise
awareness of their respective roles,
exchange ideas and examples of good
practice are rare.
The charity was founded in October 2015
by a group of consultants and GPs in the
two halves of Hertfordshire (Herts Valleys
and East & North Hertfordshire) which
cover two CCGs, one community trust and
two acute hospital trusts. Members of the
charity include a diverse range of
professionals – consultants, GPs, practice
nurse, diabetes specialist nurses,
dieticians, podiatrists and public health
specialists.
Our aim is to promote high standards of
care among health professional looking
after patients with diabetes and we have
done this through organising an annual
multi- disciplinary diabetes conference. We
believe that this opportunity for education
and networking amongst professionals and
other local organisations working to
promote healthy lifestyles will lead to
improved care and better outcomes for
people with diabetes in Hertfordshire.

Para 1.20 We have not undertaken any educational
activities this year, mainly because of the
uncertainty around funding since the
demise of the CCGs and their replacement
by the Integrated Care Board. We have
had some preliminary discussions and
hope to be able to secure funds for a future
face-to-face conference, and we are
planning another webinar for later in the
year.

to plan the conference and other
educational meetings. We work with a wide
network of organisations in the local
authority that promote healthy activities e.g.

Diabetes UK as well as diverse
professional groups that care for patients
with diabetes such as foot health and the
retinal screening service.

Dr Sonali Dasgupta was appointed as chair in March 22 but was unable to continue in the role so Nicola Cowap was acting chair until the appointment of a new chair, Dr Ben Eliad at the 2023 AGM. Nicola Cowap and Khalid Mirza are not longer trustees and they have been replaced by Ben Eliad and Alan Bellinger.

The address of the charity has changed since the departure of Dr Mirza as a trustee to the place of work of Dr Ben Eliad.
