ACHIEVEMENT AND PERFORMANCE Charitable activities
Our work is organised in four areas:
The Green, Community Centre
Nunhead's Voice is responsible for managing The Green, Nunhead's community centre. We aim to offer a lively, flexible space that is available to all members of our community. Our intention is that the centre is known by all, used by most and frequented by many. We host a mixed programme of events, classes and groups. The centre seeks to be independent and responsive to the demands and needs of local people in Nunhead with an open access policy, so that local businesses, groups and individuals can make use of the space to run commercial, community and private events and meetings.
Community activities, events and projects
Using grant funding and the income derived from The Green's operation, we deliver a programme of regular activities and events throughout the year, to benefit local people. Most, but not all, of these activities are delivered at The Green.
Increasingly, we are able to use the centre as a base for collaboration with other local individuals and organisations to broaden our reach and increase the vibrancy of life for people in Nunhead.
Community Advocacy
Nunhead's Voice was initially established as a community forum to give local people a voice to shape local services and regeneration investment. We continue to work to identify issues of local concern and advocate on behalf of residents.
Providing information
The internet and social media are increasingly widespread channels for finding out about what is going on locally, but not everyone accesses information in this way. In addition to our centre website and a growing social media presence. The Green also offers a physical community notice board and information on more comprehensive local services and activities and hosting information events by the Council and local NHS services. Staff and volunteers are always on hand to signpost, or carryout internet searches to help members of the community to find the information they need.

ACHIEVEMENT AND PERFORMANCE
Internal and external factors
Following on from a difficult year in 20/21, Covid 19 restrictions continued into this financial year, with the final lockdown ending in June 2021. We have also been operating against the back drop of a cost of living crisis which has increased need for our services.
External
-Manage and maintain The Green to provide an attractive and welcoming hub for the local community and a source of local pride, with the 'Living Room' as a welcoming public space with refreshment available from our own onsite community coffee shop (The Green Cafe.)
-Grow the regular programme of activities on offer, ensuring this caters for a diverse range of ages, interests and financial circumstances, and local residents feel there is 'something for people like me'; -Build upon and expand the existing programme of free activities for older people and increase the centre's funded offer for young people;
-Build revenue through private hires to cross-subsidise community activity.
Internal
-Take forward work on a refresh of the business plan and develop a new fundraising strategy; and -Continue developing the staff team at The Green to support the further expansion of our charitable activities.
-Centre Manager undertook 2 day Safeguarding Training for Designated Lead Persons in March 2022.

ACHIEVEMENT AND PERFORMANCE
The Green re-opened to the general public on the 12th April 2021. Some restrictions were in place with masks being worn inside, social distancing, and washing, sign in / track and trace. Some furloughing of staff continued into this year as we gradually started to increase usage within the Green.
Children's activities returned including baby dance, New Wave tae kwon do, Margarets Music, south London samba, Mother + Baby Yoga, Tots Tennis ,Nausicca piano lessons, tots track (NV) and journey around the world (NV). This developed further from our opening with NV/Green led activities (see below) running 10 sessions per week including five baby/toddler and carer classes, adult meditation, singing, boxing fitness and dance exercise, crochet; chat club and yoga for seniors. We also held a pottery workshop for children during half term.
The Ivy Club
The Ivy Club was started in the summer of 2016 after Nunhead's Voice received an initial grant from Southwark Council. The grant was made in recognition of the lack of activities for older people in Nunhead and our aim was to provide activities that would support the social, physical and mental wellbeing of older residents.
In April 2021 the Nunhead Green Community Centre re-opened following a second period of lockdown and the Ivy Club members were invited to return. During lockdown our chair exercises and meditation sessions were relayed to members via Zoom and, following the reopening, some members returned to take part in the sessions. For those who were not feeling confident to return, the sessions continued using Zoom. Also, for those people, our visits and contact with them continued. Numbers have grown over the course of the year, and only a few now, remain using Zoom.
We know the importance of exercise and social interaction. Our heartfelt thanks to Shakila for continuing her classes through lockdown, so that now the club has opened again people have maintained their support and friendship links. Sadly, Shakila has to leave us at the end of March for personal reasons. We can't express our thanks enough for what she has given to the Ivy Club, and the sadness that everyone feels on her departure. She will be a hard act to follow and will be really missed.
Primarily targeting the over-55s, the club has attracted some younger members, including those with physical and learning disabilities, who having felt lonely and isolated have seen the club as a friendly place to come along and make friends.
One of the highlights of the year was a coach trip to Folkestone on 9th September. The sun shone and our group felt they were having a much-delayed holiday by the sea. I think the people of Folkestone knew they had arrived; the fun and laughter they shared was contagious. In October the Ivy Club participated in the Green's Black History event.
In November the Ivy Club had a Christmas Party and were entertained by Paul Betts singing with his guitar. People sang and danced until they were 'fit to drop' and Santa came to distribute the Secret Santa gifts.
In March 2022 the Ivy Club celebrated International Women's Day.

ACHIEVEMENT AND PERFORMANCE
Nobody knows what the challenges for the Ivy Club will be in the months to come. What we do know is that the Ivy Club will continue to thrive. Lasting friendships have been made. Members are there for each other and outside the Green Community Centre they meet up and also use their phones to talk or to text pictures, videos and funny stories.
We thank Shakila, Lorna, Levi, Lyn, Nunhead's Voice and The Green's staff team for their continued care and support and all the members of the Ivy Club for their loyalty and determination to come through a difficult time with hope, optimism and a smile on their faces.
Nunhead's Voice Free Community Program
We were able to secure an extension for the Covid Response Grant of £50K from the London Community Relief Fund (From City Bridge Trust & the National Lottery) to allow us to set up the activities we had planned to help people ease out of lockdown We were also able to secure additional funding from the Peckham Settlement fund to help continue offering the Nature Club and Tots track activities free of charge.
We set up a community cafe and community garden and a program of free activities (that were chosen in discussion with members of the community) to help ease some of the difficulties caused by lockdown. Recruiting had started in Q1 2022 for volunteers to be trained as baristas to run the café. This aligned with our policy to keep the Nunhead Green open at all times for the community to have a safe space to visit.
We source our delicious coffee through another local charity, Change Please. a coffee roaster who support homeless individuals to train in the coffee industry and re-enter the workplace. With the changing demographic of Nunhead and the impact of the pandemic, The Green Cafe is a space where anyone can meet a friend and enjoy a good coffee in nice surroundings or drop-in for a drink and some company, no matter their financial circumstances.
As part of creating a safe space for the community and to provide opportunity for outside activity we completely renovated the Garden. There are raised growing beds, a greenhouse, a herb garden, nature play area, sensory area, wild flower bed, bug hotel and seating area. Members of the community are encouraged to come and get involved and Nature Club (Saturday Mornings) will be continuing free of charge through 2022.
The Tots Track for 2 to 5 year olds activity (Saturday Morning) will also be continuing free of charge through 2022. The crochet & chat club for adults (Tuesday Morning,) has been very successful and the Parent and child playtime (Friday afternoon) provided a supervised play with a discussion group for carers. Quantum Meditation for adults (Friday evenings., Monday and Wednesday afternoons) has also been very well attended.
The Repair Café
The Repair Cafe started on Saturday 29th Jan and runs monthly, With the support of local volunteers and 'local fixers' Martin an electrician, Aaron a carpenter and Sophie, the main organiser who understands all things knitting and how to repair clothing. The Repair café has grown in popularity through 2022.

ACHIEVEMENT AND PERFORMANCE
International Women's Day
In March 2022, we organised an International Women's Day celebration which was very much enjoyed with performances by the Green Singers in The Living Room.
Plastic Free Champions
In March 2022, we also received a Plastic Free Peckham award for our conscious effort in the Green Cafe and around the centre. Minimizing plastics laminate poster, replacing with chalk board signs, selling keep cups, installing a compost etc.
Open Day / Open House
We had a very successful Open day/ Open House at the Green on the 26th June. We showcased all of the hard work that had been done by the Volunteers and the green team. We had lots of course leaders from NV/Green led activities and our regular's hires doing small taster sessions. South London Samba opened the event, we had a drawing workshop in the garden for 'what do you want to see at The Green', mini makers in the garden with arts /crafts and candy floss stand out the front.
Nunhead Cemetery Open Day
Nunhead cemetery Open day was held on the 4th September and was a great success, with an aim of drawing people together, gaining community opinion and creating more awareness for the Nunhead's Voice. This event provided amazing feedback for Nunhead's Voice.
During the Open Day we raffled a hamper full of our garden produce that we have grown throughout this year. This drew attention to opportunities at The Green and raised £110 to support Nature club. The Green did not host any events as part of the Peckham & Nunhead Film Festival in 2021.
However, The Green did support local filmmaker Tianna Banton with a screening of her latest release A Shared Experience on the 3rd September. The Green also started to develop plans to start its own Community Cinema.
Cake and Snack fundraising event
Our Cake and Snack Saturday fundraising event at the end of September was a great success. Raising money to support Nature club and Tots track. We raised £300.
Black History Month October 2022
On 16th October we held a day of celebration, art, education, business, food and music of Black culture locally and globally. This was a really successful day, it was fun and everyone enjoyed the activities and performances. Some service users suggested this should be celebrated through the year not just October and that The Green would be a great place to start. Riverdene Roti were selling hot food on the day and raised £67 for the Volcano disaster suvivors in Dominican Republic. On Sunday 17th October we hosted a book launch event By Maggie Kapah-Milne, a local woman who has written of her experience as part of the windrush generation. She read an extract and lead a discussion.

ACHIEVEMENT AND PERFORMANCE
Halloween Family Fancy Dress Party
On 30th October 2021 this event went down a storm with the local community, who came out in full fancy dress, some children and parents looking very scary indeed, and ready to have fun. We worked with Ashanti's Balloon Boom, who funded and organised the event, to decorate Willow with balloons, cobwebs and smoke machine. There was a DJ and dancing games, raffle and costume competition. A family disco is a very rare occasion especially in these current times. It was enjoyed by children and parents of the community.
New Shed
South London Samba Leader Adam Ouissalant started a conversation because he needed storage for the groups drums, this led to an offer to build an enlarged shed, using recycled materials, which would be able to store the drums, tots track equipment and more. He, his brother Sam and friends have worked on this free of charge and it has been a real addition to The Green.
Christmas Market and Grotto - 27 Nov 2021
To start off the Christmas season we held a Christmas Market and Santa's grotto with a total number of attendees of 247 visitors and 163 children received a gift from Father Christmas.
A Christmas tree for Nunhead!
Members of Nunhead's Voice worked hard to gather support from local business owners and from the Council to have a Christmas tree installed on Nunhead Green. We were determined that after such a hard year it was important for people to come together to close the year.
We were delighted to formally switch on the lights at the annual Carol Singing event organised together with the Salvation Army. Members of the community tied wishes to the tree. Our thanks to John from AG Flowers for providing the tree.
FINANCIAL REVIEW
Financial position
Total income for the year was £107K (2021: £117K), a significant proportion of which was as a result of property hire. Total costs for the year were £146K (2021: £99K). This resulted in net expenditure in the year of £39K (2021: net income £19K). We recognise this has resulted in using our reserves to fund our charitable activities, expenditure on which has increased to £146K, from £99K in 2021.
Investment policy and objectives
The Charity has adopted an ethical investment policy to ensure that its investments do not conflict with its aims and objectives. The charity deposits funds with its bankers to ensure a reasonable return in terms of interest and long-term protection from inflation.

FINANCIAL REVIEW
Reserves policy
In the event of a considerable variation of income, we need reserves to ensure continuity of service to our beneficiaries and mitigate the effects of unforeseen financial changes. During 2016/17, the Board agreed to hold reserves equivalent to 3 months running costs, and we remain committed to this currently holding £28k of strategic reserves.
Reserves held
Total reserves as at 31 March 2022 are £26k, all of which are unrestricted (2021: Total reserves £65k ,unrestricted reserves £24k). We have fully spent down our restricted reserves in the year on programmes. Unrestricted reserves held are in line with our policy which requires 3 months of operational spend to be held in reserve.
The reserves and cash flow position will be closely monitored by the Finance Sub Committee of the Board at its regular monthly meetings and monitored by the Centre Manager. The reserves target is reviewed as part of the annual budget setting cycle.
Going concern
The charity trustees have continued to make appropriate enquiries, review the impact of the COVID 19 situation on the charity that there are no implications which may be so severe as to cast doubt upon the charity's financial sustainability, and also review that the charity has adequate resources and sufficient sources of funds available for the foreseeable future, and thus the trustees are confident that the charity will continue in operation for the foreseeable future, at least 12 months from signing, hence, a going concern basis was adopted by the trustees in preparing the accounts for the year ended 31 March 2022.
FUTURE PLANS
For this coming year we will continue to focus on meeting the local community's immediate needs and capitalise on our newly forged local partnerships to keep building on our community service offer in communication with the local community.
We intend to continue to set ambitious but achievable targets to rebuild and increase the centre's regular programmed offer through commercial hires. With a secure hire income base re-established, our priority remains to continue to increase our own programming of free, open access events and activities, driven by a clear understanding of local needs and maximising reach throughout the community through effective marketing. To take this forward, The Voice is coordinating work on an updated strategic plan and new impact monitoring framework to inform our future development.
STRUCTURE, GOVERNANCE AND MANAGEMENT
Governing document
The charity is controlled by its governing document, a deed of trust, and constitutes a limited company, limited by guarantee, as defined by the Companies Act 2006.

Status
The organisation is a charitable company limited by guarantee.
Governing document
The Company was established under a memorandum of association, which established the charitable Company's objects and powers and is governed under its articles of association.
Organisational structure
Organisation
A Board of Trustees governs the charity. The Green Community Centre is run on their behalf by two Centre Co-Managers with a permanent team of nine paid, part-time employees, supported by freelance staff and volunteers in the community centre and professionals giving their time and expertise pro bono.
Governance
Nunhead's Voice appoints trustees based on the skills and experience to bring to the custodianship and management of the charity. Prospective trustees, who are also directors of the Company, are recruited from the local community by public advertisement and are appointed through an open vote at the AGM. STRUCTURE, GOVERNANCE AND MANAGEMENT
Risk management
As identified by the trustees, the major risks to which the charity is exposed have been reviewed as set out below, and systems have been established to mitigate those risks. In particular, Trustees are working to ensure that Nunhead's Voice is financially sound, well-governed and a best practice employer.
-
Health and Safety : As part of our health and safety policy, risk assessments are undertaken for all activities, including any requirements to make us a 'covid-safe' environment. Regular hirers and those providing activities for the public are subject to relevant checks of professional qualifications and confirmation of DBS checks where appropriate. Staff, volunteers and regular centre users receive an induction that includes the health and safety policy, safety procedures and equipment. Policies are in place to cover safeguarding and lone working. Procedures are in place for regular testing of safety equipment and alarms and for legionella. A fire safety audit was undertaken and an action plan completed in the year.
-
Financial sustainability : Our ability to continue to deliver public benefit depends on our financial sustainability. Having established reserve funds, the charity remains resilient against fluctuations in hire income. Our reserves policy is set out above, and financial performance is monitored closely by the Finance Committee.
-Financial control: The organisation has a high level of financial transactions as a result of hire income and activity, including cash payments. Financial Regulations were reviewed and updated in 2018/19. We employ a bookkeeper, which further improves segregation of duties control. The Finance Committee has oversight of financial controls.
- Organisational resilience : During the year, we have been able to keep our full staffing team thanks to the governments Employee Retention Scheme, so can return to our commitment of the centre being open to the public all day. We have expanded our volunteer base, focussing volunteer support on community programming, in particular to support the Cafe and Garden Club, and NV Community Program activities and events.

Taxation
The charity is exempt from corporation tax on its charitable activities.
Fund accounting
Unrestricted funds can be used in accordance with the charitable objectives at the discretion of the trustees.
Restricted funds can only be used for particular restricted purposes within the objects of the charity. Restrictions arise when specified by the donor or when funds are raised for particular restricted purposes.
Further explanation of the nature and purpose of each fund is included in the notes to the financial statements.
