The main activities are to fund raise for and organise, through four local sailing schools, the delivery of weekly school sailing lessons during term time for predominantly primary schools. In addition through organising sponsorship we charter a Tall Ship for 10 days in the summer to provide 14 sixteen to eighteen year olds living in Cornwall with the opportunity of a life- changing adventure at sea. We also respond to requests for specific funds from individuals to support their sailing ambitions. |

This is the most cost effective and inclusive way of enabling young people to learn to sail. We select schools in the local area on the basis of indicators of multiple |

Para 1.20 | Since the scheme started the charity has enabled over 1,000 young people from schools to learn to sail. Many of these schools come from some of the most deprived parts of Europe. The children have never even been to the beach let alone dreamed of going sailing. We know from the feedback from teachers and parents that along with the sailing skills the children the children gain confidence from trying a new activity outside their comfort zone, and benefit from self reliance and team work from their sailing. For some it becomes a passion for life and they continue sailing and end up helming racing boats in local regattas. A few having become dinghy instructors or work as professional sailors on boats. We are literally changing their horizons. Those who have been on the Tall Ships trips tell us that it is life-changing. 14 participated this year, with a further 11 |
the year before. One girl summarised it as ‘the best 10 days of my life’. Apart from the sailing and adventure it gives them a close group of friends whose support continues after the trip. For some it gives them an insight into enjoying being at sea so they consider joining the navy or undertaking marine biology. The individuals benefit in that they can take their sailing further than they otherwise could given their financial resources. We are able to sustain the passion. For all, it gives a new experience that develops confidence and water awareness which is of great benefit throughout their lives and to the wider public.

Para 1.21 | We ended the year with a surplus of £48,485 (2021 £70,993). We receive about £16,143 in regular and other donations from individual supporters (£17,688 in 2021), together with £21,132 from charitable trusts, companies and other organisations (£58,067 in 2021). We also plan a repeat of many of our fund raising activities which also raise awareness of our work – such as Percuil and the Tresanton Classics Regattas – brought in a further £6,285 (£1,908 in 2021). The Tall Ships voyage seeks to find sponsors for each of the 14 berths and many of these have become regular returning sponsors. The young people are also encouraged to collectively raise funds to support a young person the subsequent year. Our grants to individuals which comprise a very small amount of our funding totalled £847 (£815 in 2021). |
