THE BAKED BEAN CHARITY
REPORT OF THE TRUSTEES
FOR THE YEAR ENDED 31ST MARCH 2021
SERVICES
The Charity remained focused on delivering two distinct services but implemented adaptations to ensure all learners could access services during lockdown /COVID restrictions.
LIFEWORKS which delivers classes to adults and young people with Learning Disabilities through Life Long learning
INTENSIVE SUPPORT provides intensive one to one packages of education for young people with Special Educational Needs up to the age of 25.
LIFEWORKS
The Baked Bean Charity delivered five distinct learning programmes. These were delivered initially face to face and then virtually.
All courses were designed to support the individual personal development goals of all our students. They were designed to support them to be more independent citizens, developing specific knowledge and skills for their futures, incorporating the development of their English skills for Language and Literature, Numeracy skills for life and Digital skills. All courses gave students the tools, enabling them to progress in areas, that previously were not accessible.
All courses were also designed to be delivered through an engagement and intervention project that was concerned with English language, Communication skills and Numeracy using topics such as Art, Healthy living, and practical ICT.
They were also designed to develop reading skills and prepare learners to approach literary texts with greater confidence. While some courses specifically dealt with literature, many of the languagebased activities overlapped with the literature, ICT and numeracy aims.
All of the courses overall aim was to develop students’ skills and knowledge, giving them the tools to become more independent learners in the modern world. Despite COVID restrictions, which impacted upon face-to-face delivery, students showed an improvement in English and communication skills, Numeracy and ICT knowledge and also demonstrated engagement in areas of interest such as Healthy Eating and British Values.
Last year’s courses were :
GET DIGITAL
This course focused on the acquisition of digital skills. The need for these became particularly apparent during the lockdown period.
WORD POWER
This course delivered an introduction to Literacy but also encouraged teamwork and social inclusion and showed a clear progression throughout three terms of
differentiated but challenging sessions which strongly encourage creativity and self-expression through the written word.
LIFEWORKS
The course was designed to teach learners very basic, highly practical life skills encouraged to develop confidence in basic literacy and numeracy whilst also learning how to navigate their local community.
EXPRESS YOURSELF
The course delivered an introduction to the world of Art History with an emphasis on self-reflection, self-expression (verbal and written), and self-discovery.
HEALTHY GREEN BEANS
The course delivered an introduction to a healthy lifestyle / balanced diet encouraged teamwork and social inclusion demonstrated the link between physical and mental health. It also aimed to establish healthy lifestyle routines.
THE INTENSIVE SUPPORT SERVICE
This service was designed to promote education and social inclusion among children and young people with special, educational, behavioural and emotional needs and disabilities.
The team worked holistically with young people and their family, who had been identified by the local authority as causing concern, at risk of neglect, abuse, exclusion or of becoming Looked After.
The focus was on young people:
-
With emotional and behavioural needs recorded in an EHCP
-
At risk of abuse or neglect and requiring intensive family support
-
With unmet /undiagnosed SEN’s and or learning disabilities.
-
At risk of being placed in care or currently Looked after.
-
At risk of permanent exclusion
-
With challenging / complex behavioural issues
-
Needing curriculum support – from very basic literacy and numeracy up to and including GCSE’s
The Charity delivered intensive 1:1 tuition through a personalised individual learning programme with weekly targets and a same day targeted approach to addressing issues at home.
Throughout COVID lockdowns the charity maintained a full service and continued to work with some of the most disadvantaged young people using task focused education.
Feedback during this period evidenced that, despite virtual learning replacing the intensive one to one face to face support which is the hallmark of the charities model, we continued to improve school attendance, improved behaviour and engagement in education, raised aspirations and selfesteem and improved parental engagement.
