Trustees’ Annual Report for the period

From 01-05-2022 Period start date To 30-04-2023 Period end date Charity name: The Society of Strange and Ancient Instruments

Charity registration number: 1163847

Objectives and Activities

SORP reference
Summary of the purposes of
the charity as set out in its
governing document
Para 1.17 The objects of the SSAI are: to promote the
arts and the education of the public by
providing musical performances, lecture
recitals and workshops, information, a
forum and other facilities in respect of
unusual historical musical instruments,
including the trumpet marine ('TM'), for as
wide an audience aspossible.
Summary of the main
activities in relation to those
purposes for the public
benefit, in particular, the
activities, projects or
services identified in the
accounts.
Para 1.17 and
1.19
Due to the untimely death of SSAI’s Artistic
Director, Clare Salaman in January 2022
the focus for the remaining trustees was on
finding the best way forward for the Trust.
Extensive consultation took place with the
TM ensemble and other stakeholders.
Research was undertaken with various
music colleges including the Royal College
of Music to find the best home for the
storage, development and maintenance,
and ongoing use of the instruments. As a
consequence, no public activities took
place in thisperiod.
Statement confirming
whether the trustees have
had regard to the guidance
issued by the Charity
Commission on public
benefit
Para 1.18 The trustees are aware of the guidance
issued by the Charity Commission on public
benefit and in 2022/23 investigated the
best solution so that the activities of The
Society of Strange and Ancient Instruments
met the criteria set out therein.

Achievements and Performance

SORP
reference
Summary of the main
achievements of the
charity, identifying the
difference the charity’s
work has made to the
circumstances of its
beneficiaries and any
wider benefits to society
as a whole.
Para 1.20 The TM project generates new information,
entertainment and educational events and a
practical resource, which it makes available to a
wide audience. In 2022/23 SSAI focussed on the
consolidation of TM project resources (editing
recordings & research into the future structure
of the trust) to ensure its legacy and
dissemination.
The Society of Strange and Ancient Instruments
(SSAI) confirmed its wish to continue to offer
workshops, public performances of ground-
breaking musical and cross-arts work, and a
public forum for those interested in ‘strange and
ancient’ instruments.
These activities satisfy the objects of the CIO in
promoting the arts and education of the public
by providing performances and workshops,
alongside a forum (website and social media) in
respect of unusual historical instruments. SSAI’s
social media presence continued to reach a
large and diverse audience and a Radio 3
programme dedicated to Clare Salaman and her
work with SSAI on the The Early Music Show on
22 January further maintained SSAI media
presence and was well received.
