Summary of the objects of the charity set out in its governing document
To advance public education in the Arts and to promote knowledge, understanding and appreciation in the Arts (in particular drama, scenography, music, dance, visual and performing Arts) by the production, in collaboration with other artists and venues, of innovative plays and performance work that are both intellectually stimulating and entertaining, and of a national and international standard of excellence.

2022/2023 saw the completion of Brighton Theatre’s INSECT TRILOGY, with the premiere on the Brighton Fringe of COCKY & THE TARDIGRADES. The Artistic and Associate Directors then turned to researching Moscow in 1941 on the eve of the German invasion of the USSR; focusing on the legendary meeting between two rival poets, Anna Akhmatova and Marina Tsvetaeva. The war in Ukraine would provide a contemporary context for this drama of resistance and betrayal, told through the writings of the two poets, and set against the threat of national annihilation.

Summary of the main April 2022: British Actors’ Equity hosted the launch of the new achievements of the charity edition of Richard Crane’s GHOST BOY: A PLAYWRIGHT’S during the year PROGRESS. April/May 2022: Pre-production, rehearsal and performance of COCKY AND THE TARDIGRADES, the final play in Brighton Theatre’s INSECT TRILOGY. - June September 2022: Beginning research into ANNA & MARINA to premiere May 2023. Meetings with Elisabeth Robson, former Head of BBC Ukrainian Service; Orlando Gough, composer with special interest in the works of Tsvetaeva and Akhmatova; and Denis Stolyarov, Producer in Contemporary Art and Cultural Strategist, Pushkin House, London. - September November 2022: Negotiations with Waterloo Press for publication of the three plays of Brighton Theatre’s INSECT TRILOGY. Interviews, reviews, promotions with Latest TV, Fringe Review and the What Next? Network, dedicated to ‘ building unlikely alliances through arts and culture ’. December 2022/January 2023: Writing, fund-raising, casting ANNA & MARINA. Remote attendance on Zoom at International Playwrights’ Forum. Faynia Williams continued to represent Brighton Theatre at meetings with Equity, Arts & Culture Network and the Stephen Joseph Committee. Richard Crane began researching/writing BREAKING GLASS, the sequel to GHOST BOY. February 2023: Artistic and Associate Directors were invited to observe the work of Los Angeles-based CREATIVE ACTS, with both juvenile offenders and the long-term incarcerated. Remote attendance at the International Theatre Institute’s Biennial Congress in Fujairah. Observed and took part in Amazon’s Youth Opportunities Open Day, Culver City, USA. March/April 2023: Preproduction, promotion for ANNA & MARINA. Rehearsals commenced 4th April, towards world premiere on the Brighton Fringe 5th May 2023.

We intend to build up reserves as appropriate to a small grant aided arts charity. Ideally we would like to have sufficient reserves to enable us to invest in innovative productions without over reliance on external grants.
