What started as a Centenary project has expanded to a global movement of young people who are sharing their thoughts not just on past conflicts. but current conflicts as well. We are extremely proud of each young petson WIK) has participated in our programmes over the years. Young people are exposed lo the horrorn of war on a daily basi8 and théy need a place to share their thoughts, feelings and anxieties. Our freelance practitioners vlsited schools across the UK, provldlng tools for young people to creatively express themselves on challenging toplcs. Our Conversations on Conflict programme has allowed for young people to hw4e their voices heard. The Voices of Amied Forces Children programme supported the military community - giving seNice children a unique platform to share about their experience of having a parent in the military. Service children got to share their creative voices in poetry. art and song on some very powerful platforms, raising awareness and underslanding about service life. The military community as a whole shared how proud they were of these young people and many parents sha￿d that their children felt understood and that they ￿Ere not alone in their feelings on having a parent deployed or away frequently. The intemational competition featured fourcategories: Poetry, Art, Speech and Song and was open lo young people aged 9-18. We saw work from over 70 countries. The worf< spoke to such a wide variety of conf licts, both historical and current and spoke of conf licts they had seen in the media or had experienced personally. The judges werE really impressed with the VK)rk of the young people, commenting how dIVe￿e the V￿rk was this year. with a wide variety of medlums. Wlnners from 17 countries joined on Zoom calls to celebrate with one another. It was a special time for them to meet each other, hear congratulatory Messages from the judges and leam f rom others about the diff erent topics they created their pieces on. All participants received a special personalised certif icate of commendation for their work. NSI 10th Anniversary Celebration al Edinburyh Castle We held a special roadshow at Edinburgh Castle as part of our 10th anniversary celebrations. The Governor of Edinburgh Castle. Major General Alastair Bruce of Crionalch. OBE DL VR vdcomed students from across Scotland who had participated in NSI progrdmmes to present their e￿ative pleces to dignitaries including community leadets. members of the amied forces and NSI supporters. The young people ref lected on a wide range of topics., from the centenary of the First World War to more recent conflicts. Military children also shared what it means to be a Chi￿ of a serving parent. tt was a powerful collective of youth voices. our f uture leaders and peacekeepers. R•M•fflbran￿ Dty We vSs5ted all flve MOD schools In CypNs ahead of Remembrance Day to create poètry for local community events. Over 500 chlldren, most of whom have a parent currently sepiing in the Amied Forces, participated in the ￿￿￿ShOpS. Additionally, poetry workshops were held at RAF Leeming to share at the Fesliv81 of Remembrance seriice at Ripon Cathedral, which is viewed online by over 1.000 people. Workshops and Actlvltles We held virtual and in person creative workshops across the UK and around the wortd throughout the year. Our poetry, art. speech and songwriting practitioners visited schools for workshops. roadshows and other special avents in England, Scotland, Wales, Northem Ireland, Cyprus, Germany and Ihe USA. Th• young people leamed how to use the creative arts to share their reflection8 on conflict, gaining crnative writing and public speaking skills. Ukralnlan and Unaccompanled Chlldren Livlng In Ayrshlre: We were delighted to be part of a f antastic event at Ayr Town Hall. which brought together 110 students from North, East and SoLrth Ayrshi￿. The young people who took part came from a wide variety of places, including Ukraine. Af ghanistan, Chad, Turf(iye, Saudi Arabia. Kuwait. Irdq. Syria and Scotland. Many of them were displaced and thting in a new language. They were guided through the creative process by NSI prdctitioner Nlk,Perrlng, asked some slmple questions relatlng to food, object, language, experience and advice. Every participant did a fantastic job at translating their an$¥￿rS into poetry to celebrate where they are from. they miss and what they have discovered in their new home. Following the Iwrkshop, students ate lunch together, before presenting their work to an audience of their pee￿. teacher5. parents, local councillor5. academics and representatives f rom Education Scotland. Gensler: We worked with London based architectural f im Gensler on several projects in Ukraine. Th8 Regional Administration of Zaporizhzhla reached out to Gensler and asked for them lo desig n an 'underground school that would keep the children safe during the shelling and allow them to leam in per50n, fora full day, unintenupted. There are 40.000 students in schools of Zaporizhzhia and only 119 of the schools have shelters. Most children cannot attend school in per50n, and many are not completing their educational programmes. Not only does this disrupt their nonnal leaming and groW<h, it limits their future opportunilies for higher education. This school could be used as a prototype for schools in other cities and regions across Ukraine that are also under threat of shelling. Based on Ihe expertise of NSI. Gensler asked NSI to hold a creative y￿rkshOp with children and teachers from the Cossack Lyceum School to define what a safe school looks Ilke for them: one that allows for their education to thrive and provides hope for the future. The poem NOTHING IS IMPOSSIBLE. a Collaborative poem by the young people, was an important artefact of the project and also a key guiding light for the design, ensuring that the voices of pupils and teachers are heard and represented in the physical space of the underground school. In the f inal concept design. the poem was featured prominently in the entry of the school and design ideas from the young people were f eatured throughout the renderings. Following a successf ul partnership, NSI has been invited to continue worf(ing wlth Gensler on a similar project in the Kharkiv Region, redesigning a destroyed community. Young people were invited to share whal their ideal neighbo urhood might look like. Gemiany: NSI Poet In Residence and veteran Cllve Sandern vlslted the town of Helmstedt in LovKr Saxony, Germany. Over days we ran a series of poetry workshops with young people of various ages and backgrounds. Participants were answering the question'how does war affect people's lives?, Several students had personal perspectives to share, while othern looked at historical conflicts. Everyone approached the topic sensitively and showed great respect for their peer3. We hosted a poelry shovKase event at the Juleum Novum in Helmstedt - a beautif ul old universlty building. This was a fantastic success, with the words of the young people having a profound impact on audience. Royal Society of Arts 10th Annlversary Exhlbltlon: The work featured In thls exhibition was a collection of over 30 thought provoking pieces entered into our competitions over the past 10 years. The art reflecls on conf licts bolh past and present. local and global. li was exhibited In the Vaults at the Royal Soclety of Arts from 1-5 July 2024. AS part of this 10th anniversary celebration, several of the artists ¥￿th work on dlsplay travelled to London, to take part in a speGlal guided tour. Q&A and drinks reception. Arnong other speclal guests. the reception was attended by NSI'S President, Vice Admiral Sir Tirn Laurence KCVO CB ADC(P) and actor Charles Dance OBE, who kindly read a selection of poems from NSI wnners. NSI Young Ambassador John EV￿luga then presented a poem that he had wrFtten for the evenl. marking the charity's 10th birthday. The NSI Alumni Group has young people from over 20 different countries and meets every other month. Annually, we ask the young peopl8 a series of questions, to Captu￿ the impact of Involvement in the exhibltion. CPS Book.. NSI was invited to contrfbute to a book titled: 'Children. Peace & Security: Centring Children and Young People's Critical PeTSP8Ctives'. This book is co4dited by Dr. Katherine Baillie Abidi from Mount Saint Vincenl Unlversity. Dr. Kate Swanson and Tanha Tanjila f rom Dalhousie University and Achaleke Leke f rom Local Youth Comer Cameroon. It is urKler contract Nlryth McGill -Queens Univernity Press, Canada. While many books have explored the causes and consequences of amied conflict. f ew have analysed these issues from the perspectives of children and youth. Our book will bridge this gap to cenlre children and young people's perceptions of war, peace and security using art. poetry and critical analysls. The book will include over 50 key concepts in children, peace and security, organised alphabetically. Each concept will feature carefulty curated children's art, poetry orvffiting, chosen from the thousands of pieces hich make up the NSI archive. These pieces will be accompanied by crilical analysis and reflection, WTilten by renowned scholars and practitioners in the field. Voi¢es of Amed Forces Chlldren Programrne The Voices of Arnied Forces Children, programme which welcomes serlice children. 6-18 years old, lo use creative arts to share what the Royal Navy. Amiy or RAF means to them. The project asks military children to reflect on the challenges and opportunities of having a parenus in the military. The project has been an engaging way for families to speak about d rfferent topics and challenges faced by seNice families. They WTOte a song for each specific seNice. highlighting some of the unique characteristics of the Army, RAF and Royd Navy. Additionally. they created a stop animation video for the song Dandelions and came up with choreography to go with the song. mernbe￿ of the choir visited the D-Day 80 celebrations in Portsmouth and wrote a song in sponse. The choir has not only been a source of creativity for the young people, but also a consistent group for them to see their f riends and build relationships, something that can othepise be challenging in rn￿1tary communities. Worf(shops and Activities: Throughout the year, we held workshops across the UK, allowing for seNice children to have their voices heard. As part of the Festival of Frlends in Oxf ordshlre, over 100 seNice chIld￿n participated in a poetry w0￿shop. We y￿rked alongside PSHE provider Jigsaw to raise the awafeness of the experience of military children. Additionally, days for service children were held in Wales arKI our Songwriting practitioner worked with the children to wiite songs. Month of the Military Chlld (Motmc) 2024: In April, we held activities for Molmc. a time to reflect on the sacrifices made by seDiice children and recognise the Important role they play in the military family. We vlsited schools across the UK, delivering poetry and art workshops. The workshops opened up dialogue on service life, bringing peer to peer understanding between both service and civilian children. Key locations include Moray. Helensburgh. Comwall and Wiltshire, ￿ere we held a community roadshow at Tidworth Barracks. Teachers and service pupil leads were very impressed by the responses that the children shared, noting that il pmvided valuable insight into pastoral care needs of their students.
