children a unique platform to share about their experience of having a parent in the military. Service
children got to share their creative voices in poetry. art and song on some very powerful platforms, raising
awareness and underslanding about service life. The military community as a whole shared how proud

Ukralnlan and Unaccompanled Chlldren Livlng In Ayrshlre:
We were delighted to be part of a f antastic event at Ayr Town Hall. which brought together 110 students
from North, East and SoLrth Ayrshi￿. The young people who took part came from a wide variety of
places, including Ukraine. Af ghanistan, Chad, Turf(iye, Saudi Arabia. Kuwait. Irdq. Syria and Scotland.
Many of them were displaced and thting in a new language. They were guided through the creative
process by NSI prdctitioner Nlk,Perrlng, asked some slmple questions relatlng to food, object,
language, experience and advice. Every participant did a fantastic job at translating their an$¥￿rS into
poetry to celebrate where they are from. they miss and what they have discovered in their new
home. Following the Iwrkshop, students ate lunch together, before presenting their work to an audience
of their pee￿. teacher5. parents, local councillor5. academics and representatives f rom Education

Gensler: We worked with London based architectural f im Gensler on several projects in Ukraine. Th8
Regional Administration of Zaporizhzhla reached out to Gensler and asked for them lo desig n an
'underground school that would keep the children safe during the shelling and allow them to leam in
per50n, fora full day, unintenupted. There are 40.000 students in schools of Zaporizhzhia and only 119 of
the schools have shelters. Most children cannot attend school in per50n, and many are not completing
their educational programmes. Not only does this disrupt their nonnal leaming and groW<h, it limits their
future opportunilies for higher education. This school could be used as a prototype for schools in other
cities and regions across Ukraine that are also under threat of shelling.
Based on Ihe expertise of NSI. Gensler asked NSI to hold a creative y￿rkshOp with children and teachers
from the Cossack Lyceum School to define what a safe school looks Ilke for them: one that allows for
their education to thrive and provides hope for the future. The Y￿rkshoP was run by Nik Perring, an
award4yinning author and'wTiting teacher. Following the workshop, the children also created artwork of

The poem NOTHING IS IMPOSSIBLE. a Collaborative poem by the young people, was an important
artefact of the project and also a key guiding light for the design, ensuring that the voices of pupils and
teachers are heard and represented in the physical space of the underground school. In the f inal concept
design. the poem was featured prominently in the entry of the school and design ideas from the young
people were f eatured throughout the renderings. Following a successf ul partnership, NSI has been invited
to continue worf(ing wlth Gensler on a similar project in the Kharkiv Region, redesigning a destroyed
community. Young people were invited to share whal their ideal neighbo urhood might look like.
Gemiany: NSI Poet In Residence and veteran Cllve Sandern vlslted the town of Helmstedt in LovKr
Saxony, Germany. Over days we ran a series of poetry workshops with young people of various ages
and backgrounds. Participants were answering the question'how does war affect people's lives?, Several
students had personal perspectives to share, while othern looked at historical conflicts. Everyone
approached the topic sensitively and showed great respect for their peer3.
We hosted a poelry shovKase event at the Juleum Novum in Helmstedt - a beautif ul old universlty
building. This was a fantastic success, with the words of the young people having a profound impact on
audience.
