Guiseley Community Foundation Report to Trustees Year Ending 31st May 2021

The year ending 31[st] May 2021 saw the gradual opening up of schools and other institutions as the vaccination programme began to get a grip on the worst aspects of the pandemic. The Premier League Primary Stars programme and the National League Trust projects which had been delayed due to the pandemic had their completion dates extended but attracted no additional funding leading to some cash flow problems. Additional funding was sought and obtained from the Leeds Community Foundation to continue such things as our Healthy Holidays programme that had been such a success the previous year. Their resilience funding was bid for and obtained along with funding for inter-generational and Eco projects that were integrated within the National League project.

It had been recognised, towards the end of 2019, that the admin burden and keeping up with the monitoring and evaluation requirements of the various funders along with making funding applications was becoming an issue for the Development Manager and Chairman. Recruitment to this Admin position was completed in January 2020. The onset of the pandemic and the delays to the continuation of funding meant that this and other positions were placed within the Government Furlough Scheme until restrictions were lifted or eased.

Despite these problems in the early part of the financial year, overall it has been another successful year for the Foundation with the following activities being undertaken:

Schools Delivery:

Two additional partner schools Rufford Park PS and St Oswalds CofE PS were added to the original Guiseley PS, Yeadon Westfield Juniors, Guiseley Primary and Queensway PS to enhance our delivery of the Premier League Primary Stars Programme. It had been hoped that this would allow the Foundation to move from Tier 6 to Tier 5 which would have meant additional funding and the opportunity to recruit someone to oversee this activity. This project continues to provide schools with a member of the Foundation staff to support the delivery of PE within the school, provide teacher support in PE, deliver 1:1 targeted intervention for children who need additional support with PE. Whilst all activity was Covid affected the following continued to a greater or lesser degree:

• Green Meadows Special School - Working alongside school staff we delivered sports/movement sessions to children with Special Educational Needs.

• Lunchtime Provision - We delivered a range of activities at lunchtime – these included, Football skills sessions, Girls only Football sessions, multi-sports. These were delivered at Guiseley Primary and Queensway Primary.

• After School delivery - Working with our Partner schools we delivered After School football sessions to boys and girls ranging from Years 1 to 6 – these were mainly delivered at Guiseley Primary and Queensway. Alongside the Primary school delivered we also provided some After School football training at the two secondary schools – Guiseley High and Benton Park – these sessions were aimed at pupils in Years7/8/9/10.

• Early Years delivery - We delivered a new programme to Early Years children – this programme was designed to teach pre school age children skills such as handeye coordination, Agility, Balance and Co-ordination along with some basic ball skills. This was delivered at St Oswalds Early Years setting and Yeadon Westfield Infants. The plan, going forward, is to roll this programme out to more settings including private nurseries.

• Ellar Carr – (Pupil Referral Unit)- The Foundation continue to run a session at Nethermoor every Tuesday Morning – Students are brought to Nethermoor and given a football training session lasting around one and a half hours – this project is seen as a reward scheme for the students and feedback from school it that it has been a great success.

Sports Leaders

• Adel Beck Secure Children’s Home – delivery of Sports Leaders course within this establishment has been a great success. Courses at all levels have been delivered and are continuing in a Covid safe environment.

• HMP Wetherby YOI - Delivery of a Sports Leaders Level 1 course was started but then had to be suspended due to COVID-19 restrictions regarding access to site. This is yet to restart due to various Covid related incidents on the site.

• Pennington Centre – Delivery of Sports Leaders Level 1 within this specialist Pupil Referral Unit.

• Guiseley High - Delivery of a Level 2 course was started to 10 sixth form students – again this had to be suspended due to COVID-19 and is yet to restart.

• Home Education Delivery - We continued to deliver our Home Education sessions based at Nethermoor – these sessions are for children that are Home Educated – we provide their PE. The sessions are predominantly Football sessions. We have around 15 children attending each week. We then also provided a Rugby training session for these children that runs once a week for an hour.

Community Sessions:

• Over 12’s Football sessions – we run a weekly football session at Nethermoor for boy and girls over the age of 12. This has been set up by one our coaches and has been successful with over 20 young people attending each week.

• Chair Based Exercise – these sessions for older people have continued in conjunction with Memory Lane Day Centre and Wharfedale View Extra Care Housing. This has been developed as part of our inter-generational projects.

• NHS Diversional Activity – The Foundation started a new project involving the delivery of Diversional Activities to patients within the Becklin Centre of the Leeds NHS Trust.

Holiday Provision:

• Holiday Courses - We continued to run our Soccer Camps at Nethermoor – these were delivered throughout the school holidays in the Summer, October and Christmas 2020 and February 2021. All our Soccer Camps were well attended.

• Healthy Holiday - Alongside our Soccer camps, we were granted funding to continue to deliver and develop Healthy Holidays programmes which is targeted at children eligible for a Free School Meal. We provided a range of sports and cultural activities 4 days a week during all the school holidays and half-term breaks. These have been based at a number of our partner Primary Schools. As part of the programme we provided the children attending with breakfast and lunch each day along with take-home food parcels and supermarket vouchers. We consider this project to be a continuing success and one that meets significant local need which we will endeavour to continue in future years.

Events

Both the Golf Day and Beer Festival had to be postponed which had a further impact on the Foundations finances but it is hoped that these can be resumed in the 2021 / 22 financial year.
