Trustees are recruited in respect of the skills and experience they bring and are inducted by using materials from the Charity Commission and NCVO.

Trustees use agreed procedures in all aspects of their work, including risk assessment.

Safeguarding Policies and Procedures are provided to all taking part in the EYSM course and are annually reviewed. All who work with young people, whether paid or voluntary, are required to sign a Relationships of Trust document which gives clear leads on how EYSM expects them to work with young people and this document forms part of their voluntary contract or contract for paid services.

Section C Objectives and activities

Summary of the objects of the
charity set out in its
governing document
Summary of the main
activities undertaken for the
public benefit in relation to
these objects (include within
this section the statutory
declaration that trustees have
had regard to the guidance
issued by the Charity
Commission on public
benefit)
The objects of the charity are:
1. To advance, improve, develop and maintain public education in,
and appreciation of, the art of science and music in all its aspects
by any means the trustees see fit, including through the
presentation of performances and recitals;
2. to further such charitable purpose or purposes as the trustees in
their absolute discretion shall think fit but in particular through the
making of grants and donations.
The EYSM mission is to offer the best possible opportunities to young
people to participate in an orchestral and vocal summer course which
enables them to undertake new musical experiences.
In doing so, EYSM adheres to the following principles:
SafetyAll activities take place in an environment of respect and safety
for all participants with regard to current legislation and taking a lead
from best practice in education.
InclusivityThe chance to take part is offered to any young person
between the ages of 11 and 21 (or 8 and 12 for Juniors) who has the
talent to take part in the work, without any auditioning process. Where
economic background means the course fee is unaffordable, EYSM
endeavours to find sponsorship to support young people to attend.
ExcellenceEYSM supports the highest possible standards and seeks
always to enable participants to experience both artistic and personal
growth.
RangeEYSM seeks to explore a variety of musical works across a
range of genres that extend the repertoire of performers.
Enjoyment and fulfilmentEYSM provides an holistic experience
encompassing a wide range of musical experience in playing, singing
and listening. Ancillary activities are structured around music and sport
and they all support team work.
In carrying out its mission, EYSM keeps in mind Charity Commission
guidance on public benefit and ensures that its activities retain the focus
of its aims and objectives.
EYSM draws on musicians at the height of their profession who work at
reduced rates in order to support the participation of young people with
talent. EYSM also seeks bursary assistance for young people where
needed, with the aim of ensuring that no young person is disadvantaged
due topersonal circumstances.

Additional details of objectives and activities (Optional information)

EYSM is constantly seeking further support for participants who cannot afford to pay the full course fee by approaching grant-making trusts and companies. Particular thanks are due to the John Lewis Partnership Trust, Yamaha and to individual private donors who have given significant support to young people.

You may choose to include further statements, where relevant, about:

EYSM is extremely grateful to the volunteers who organise and run the course from their homes throughout the year, providing guidance for potential applicants, receiving applications, sending and receiving-in essential information from boarders and day students, researching and ordering sheet music and instruments, keeping a full financial record of all income and expenditure, allocating bursary funds to young people and, of course, attending meetings to discuss plans and progress.

EYSM is also grateful to those who set aside their time to help during the EYSM week, receiving only expenses.

All of this enables EYSM to spend its revenue on supporting the young people for whose benefit the charity was formed.

Achievements and performance

Section D

Summary of the main achievements of the charity during the year

EYSM was unable to run a live performance in 2020 due to the Covid Epidemic. Instead, EYSM provided a week of online activities for students from the UK and overseas and also presented selections of past performances online.

During this time, EYSM attracted attention through its internet presence which increased its online presence.

Costs involved in creating the online activity were met by sponsors in order to support the charity remaining in the public eye.

Conductors and tutors gave their time to online workshops, incurring no artistic cost.

In terms of the continuing revisions of risk assessment work, EYSM’s Core Team of volunteer organisers met to ensure online safety was reviewed and set in place.
