Our volunteers have continued to work on digitising, transcribing and promoting the ‘Punjab Registers’, an incredibly significant archive based on original registers created for British colonial authorities in the 1920s that will shed new light on the role of Punjabis in the First World War and help British Punjabis connect to their family histories. Our volunteers showcased the database of records at community events in Gravesend, Cardiff and Birmingham.

Summary of the main activities undertaken for the public benefit in relation to these objects (include within this section the statutory declaration that trustees have had regard to the guidance issued by the Charity Commission on public benefit)

In collaboration with the University of Greenwich, Commonwealth War Graves Commission and the National Army Museum, London, preparations were made to launch two fully funded PhD scholarships to explore the Punjab Registers.

We have continued to keep in mind the Charity Commission's guidance on public benefit and we have undertaken the above activities accordingly.

Additional details of objectives and activities (Optional information)

The charity continues to be supported by volunteers who believe in our work and give their time and effort willingly.

You may choose to include further statements, where relevant, about:

Our active pool of volunteers helps with nearly every aspect of our activities. While undertaking tasks assigned to them, we encourage volunteers to highlight any inefficiencies in our processes. This forms an ongoing discussion with each individual. All effective suggestions are embedded in future work wherever possible.

Section D Achievements and performance

Summary of the main achievements of the charity during the year

Work continued on digitising and transcribing the ‘Punjab Registers’, an incredibly significant archive based on original registers created for British colonial authorities in the 1920s and today held in Lahore Museum, Pakistan. The registers encompass around 320,000 recruitment records of Punjabis who served in the First World War. The registers were compiled on a village-by-village basis, spanning 28 districts of pre-partition Punjab. Almost 1.5 million Indians served with British armies during the First World War. Of these, nearly half a million came from the province of Punjab – which was divided between India and Pakistan in 1947. The aim of our collaborative project is to investigate the role of Punjabis in the First World War and to help British Punjabis connect to their family histories.

During the year, the entire digitised database of the registers was showcased at the Gravesend Dharmic Mela (April), the Cardiff Mela in partnership with the Royal British Legion (June) and in Birmingham at the Sikh Lens Film Festival (June). A team of our volunteers organised free workshops at these events to help families discover their wartime connections.

At an event during South Asian Heritage Month (August), our chair, Amandeep Madra, spoke about Sikh and Punjabi military service in the world wars. Volunteers also interviewed guests who shared stories of South Asian service in the Second World War. Our vice chair, Harbakhsh Grewal, was awarded a British Empire Medal in the King’s New Year’s Honours list (December) for decades of services to Sikh & Punjabi heritage, most recently in connection with the Punjab Registers.

In collaboration with the University of Greenwich, preparations were made to launch two fully funded PhD scholarships to explore the Punjab Registers. This important initiative would allow two postgraduate researchers to work on two funded projects to understand the crucial role of colonial soldiers in the world wars and the effects of colonial service on those who enlisted - as well as why these histories have been neglected and misunderstood: 1) The Commonwealth War Graves Commission Doctoral Scholarship will examine what the Punjab Registers tell us about the commemoration and non-commemoration of South Asian soldiers after the First World War. The project is expected to make a major contribution to addressing historical inequalities in the commemoration of colonial soldiers. 2) The National Army Museum Doctoral Scholarship will investigate the social, cultural and military history of the Indian Army c. 1895-1947. Exploring the Punjab Registers and the museum’s Indian Army collections, the project will provide new perspectives on the men & communities who served on behalf of the British empire in the global wars of the 20th century.
