OSCAR India raises funds in the UK to support the development of sports and education projects in India.

OSCAR India delivers a young leaders' training course, aimed at giving young people aged between 15-25 the skills and confidence to deliver practical sports coaching and educational sessions to other young people from their local communities.

The Trustees and volunteers from the UK regularly visit India to train up and support young people from OSCAR Foundation and other partner organisations to become young leaders and to help them to develop their sports and education programmes. As part of the training programme, coaching equipment and resources are supplied to the young leaders and partner organisations.

Once trained, the young leaders act as role models in their communities and deliver regular sports, life skills and education sessions in their local communities under the guidance of the organisation they are affiliated to.

Additional details of objectives and activities

Summary of the main achievements of the charity during the year 2020/21

Due to Covid 2020 was an exceptional year for everyone and in particular a very tough year for the communities that the projects we fundraise for in

India. It was also a challenging year for fundraising.

We are proud that despite this the UK team and our partner delivery team in India proved resourceful, adaptable and in the UK we were able to ensure that we had our best fundraising year to date.

The UK Board met more regularly and we agreed early on in the Pandemic that we would support the Covid relief work that OSCAR Foundation were undertaking in India which was initially providing basic emergency food rations to those families most in need due to loss of their daily wage earning jobs and the strict lockdown. As lockdown eased our focus moved back to fundraising for a broader range of activities and programmes as outlined below. Travel restrictions have meant that no Trustees or UK volunteers were able to visit India after March 2020 nor were we able to welcome any beneficiaries from India to the UK.

Football and Education programmes and the Impact of COVID

The Covid Pandemic meant that from March 2020 through to the end of January 2021 there were no permitted formal football activities in India and the majority of the Education Centres were closed. The OSCAR India (UK) Board worked in close partnership with the team at OSCAR Foundation on the ground in India to divert existing funds into COVID relief activities and to rapidly fund raise for these. In the period March-July the team raised over £43,000. Initially the programmes were focused on distribution of food and hygiene rations to vulnerable families within the communities usually served by the football programmes. Over the year this moved into working creatively to continue some education and exercise activities using tools like WhatsApp or worksheets distributed by Young Leaders. With Schools closed in India, the focus then shifted to the development and set up of Digital Learning Centres where children and young people with no access to the internet can come to catch up on lessons and also learn digital skills. Through our partnership with Manchester City Football Citizen’s Programme funds raised by the UK team and matched by the Citizen’s Programme on behalf of OSCAR Foundation totalled nearly £200k in 2020.

Child Sponsorship

In 2020 our Child Sponsorship programme continued to grow. This programme is particularly important to our partners at OSCAR Foundation as it allows us to fund the ongoing core programmes in a way that some grant funding does not. We were particularly pleased that during the pandemic sponsors continued their support we achieved a renewal rate of over 70%+ through the hard work of the team in India and UK. We ended the year with over 80 sponsored children.

International Young Leaders Programme

To support fundraising and logistics on the schools tour we have an OSCAR International Young Leaders programme. This provides a forum for young people from the UK schools that the team visits, who want to be more involved in raising funds and developing as a young leader. In 2020, even before COVID there was no planned schools tour to the UK from India, so activities in this area were limited by this and the pandemic. Nevertheless our Young Leaders continued to support fundraising activities carrying out a number of virtual fundraisers and actively promoting the charity on social media.

Fund Raising

Despite the pandemic we were able to raise a record amount of money in 2020. We were fortunate that many of our previous donors and child sponsors were hugely generous and we were supported by previous volunteers, yoga teachers from around the world who held Oscar practice sessions and many others. Of particular note was the continued support from the schools who have hosted as part of the Schools Tours in 2016, 18 and 19, who held non uniform days, sports challenges and more to raise funds for us.

Advice & Skills

UK based Trustees and volunteers use their skills and expertise to help capacity build as part of the programmes in India. In 2020 this included supporting work to review Monitoring and Evaluation (M&E) metrics and the set up of the UpShot M&E system used in India by OSCAR Foundation. A full review of OSCAR Foundation’s safeguarding policy and code of practice was completed by a combined team from India and Nigel Haunch Trustee of OSCAR India. Monthly mentoring sessions were started between a number of OSCAR India UK Trustees and members of the OSCAR Foundation Management team and where appropriate UK Trustees from OSCAR India have advised on or been part of recruitment for key appointments in the Indian Team.

Trustee Team:

No Trustees stood down. Two new trustees were appointed, Cosmo Lush and Crispin Simon.

Looking forward to 2021

In 2020 our aim was to hold a large gala fundraising event, however the pandemic meant that was not possible, we are hoping that we can do this in 2021 around Diwali, however the plans will be continually reviewed based on

government guidance and socially distanced options are being considered as back up. We plan to continue to support the Oscar Foundation in India with their life-skills, football, education programmes encouraging the expansion of their programme around gender equality for girls. We also plan to grow the child sponsor programme.

Brief statement of the charity's policy on reserves:

In 2020 the charity implemented a formal reserves policy and the agreed reserves funds are clearly shown as a separate balance sheet item and require Board approval to be accessed for the specific exceptions outlined in the policy.

Details of any funds materially in deficit: None

The Trustees / Directors declare that they have approved the Trustees' and Directors' Report above. Signed on behalf of the charity's Trustee s/ Directors

Contractual income and This is only included in the SoFA once the charity has provided the related goods or performance related services or met the performance related conditions. grants Donated goods are measured at fair value (the amount for which the asset could be Donated goods exchanged) unless impractical to do so. The cost of any stock of goods donated for distribution to beneficiaries is deemed to be the fair value of those gifts at the time of their receipt and they are recognised on receipt. In the reporting period in which the stocks are distributed, they are recognised as an expense at the carrying amount of the stocks at distribution.

Donated goods for resale are measured at fair value on initial recognition, which is the expected proceeds from sale less the expected costs of sale, and recognised in 'Income from other trading activities' with the corresponding stock recognised in the balance sheet. On its sale the value of stock is charged against 'Income from other trading activities' and the proceeds from sale are also recognised as 'Income from other trading activities'.

Goods donated for on-going use by the charity are recognised as tangible fixed assets and included in the SoFA as incoming resources when receivable.

Gifts in kind for use by the charity are included in the SoFA as income from donations when receivable.

Donated services and Donated services and facilities are included in the SOFA when received at the value of facilities the gift to the charity provided the value of the gift can be measured reliably. Donated services and facilities that are consumed immediately are recognised as income with an equivalent amount recognised as an expense under the appropriate heading in the SOFA.
