Chairman’s Report for the Season 2020-2021

This has been a particularly difficult season for Wetherby RUFC and its people. Notwithstanding the impact that the Covid-19 pandemic has had on all players and volunteers we were all devastated by the untimely and sudden loss of one of our Club stalwarts and friend to so many – Richard Jones. After a brief illness Richard was sadly taken from us in February.

It is at these most painful of times, however, that our rugby community truly shone and displayed all the core characteristics that makes this sport stand out from all others. This community spirit was no more evident than in the herculean effort that was made by all our members, young and old, to raise the significant amount of £55,000 that was needed to complete the internal renovation of our Clubhouse – a project which had been under Richard’s determined leadership. We are now very close to being able to open the doors to a new season with a facility that we hope Richard would have been proud of.

Rugby has also suffered over the last season; COVID-19 has meant that we have struggled to gain any momentum in teams and matches. Being forced to close the Club and suspend outside activities for much of the season has deprived us all our regular social interactions with each other.

However, despite the lack of competitive rugby, we have seen through participation in the RFU’s phased programme ‘Return to Rugby’ just how enthusiastic our membership is to return to the Club. We have been delighted to welcome Evan Woodworth as our Senior Men’s Head Coach, and Lucy Bennett as the Senior Women’s Head Coach.

So much great work has been undertaken during the last 12-months, despite the difficult conditions in which we have had to operate. Whilst there are so many to whom I pay my thanks, I would like to make mention of the following:

Wetherby RUFC is a Registered Charity: 1148868

Wetherby Rugby Union Football Club Grange Park Sports & Social Club Old Boston Road Wetherby West Yorkshire LS22 5NB

Finally, I would like to thank every single member of the Committee, our players, our parents, and our volunteers for making Wetherby Rugby Club the cornerstone of our community and, through doing so, bringing so much benefit to Wetherby and our surrounding region.

Jonathan Hirst Chairman & Trustee Wetherby RUFC
