Annual report for year ending 31[st] August 2023

The Kachin Relief Fund is a charity organization, registered number 1148586, in England and Wales. It was founded in 2011 by a Kachin community in United Kingdom and granted charity status on 16th August 2012. All trustee members constitute Kachin exiles in the UK that have a good local network and can ensure the rapid delivery of humanitarian aids to the right people and locations with a transparent, very efficient and effective way.

The Kachin Relief Fund is very grateful to those individuals and organisations for their support throughout these very hard times.

Objectives

The Kachin relief fund focuses on emergency relief, education development including physical education, health and human right and advocacy. The trustees set a strategy and approach when granting funds or aids base on transparency and accountability, rapid response and target the most needed areas, and no extra burden for local partners.

Background

Burma or Myanmar is known as the longest civil war-torn nation in the world. The Kachins are one of the long-standing resisting ethnic groups since 1961. After three decades of civil war, in 1994 the Kachin Independence Organisation (KIO) signed a ceasefire agreement with the Burma regime that lasted for 17 years. In 2010-2011, tensions between the government and the KIO began to grow and escalated into open conflict on June 9, 2011. The hostility led to putting an end to a 17-year-long cease-fire and causing massive displacement of the local population in Kachin and Northern Shan States. Within months; more than 320 villages have been destroyed and over 120,000 Kachin civilians which made up to 10% of the entire Kachin population became Internally Displace Persons (IDPs) within their territories in over 135 IDPs sites due to violent direct attacks from the Burmese military and its government. The new Kachin generation become victims of unspeakable torture, and witnessing the brutality of war crimes and crimes against

humanity in their lifetime. Some hundreds of elderly people, women and children died during their run in the jungles towards the shelters (IDPs camps), because difficult childbirth or due to preventable diseases living in the crowded campsite. Many are yet to recover from their hush and traumatic experiences without proper treatment.

Over a decade of conflict-affected people experiencing multiple displacements; Kachin IDPs are suffering constant fear and anxiety in their daily life. Leaving behind their land and properties for so many years with lives in the camps has been unbearable with decreases causing humanitarian crisis. Uncertain hope to return to their homeland with dignity and their greatest concern for their children's future become increasingly deemed over the years. And to make it worse the devastating effect of the Covid-19 pandemic and the current nationwide civil war has refuelled and double burden to already suffering civilians all over again following military coup on 1st February 2021. According to the latest report from local Civil Societies Organizations (CSOs) and UN agencies; there are more than two million Internally Displace Persons (IDPs) for the last two years including pre-existing IDPs across the country. Since the coup, Kachins have been accommodating some of the students, activists and other important figures into their liberated area, so does The targeted military attacked has been increased in recent years creating more IDPs in Kachin State and Northern Shan State which make new 186 IDPs sites which is 20 more campsites than previous two years in the Kachin regions alone.

The Kachin conflict has been a neglected crises with some very limited help, the situation of the Kachin IDPs remains unchanged, and the international agencies have not gotten access to most of the IDP camps over the last 12 years. Local NGOs, religious organizations and including Kachin Relief Fund have played a crucial role in providing humanitarian assistance to the IDPs as they have been for many years as providers of humanitarian aids.
