THE ELY MEMORIAL FUND TRUSTEES REPORT
1[ST] AUGUST 2022 – 31[ST] JUY 2023
During this year, the Charity has continued to meet our objectives for the public benefit in terms of offering financial support. The Road Safety campaigning has continued to raise the profile to engage with the young people through the Young Driver’s Experience and partnership working with Dying 2 Drive. However, the Hereford & Worcester Fire Service are discussing changing the name of Dying 2 Drive as well as the delivery of the contents due to young people reacting towards the extrication conducted by all the emergency services. We will continue to support their initiative during this proposed change. Within this fiscal year our services for financial support have supported a family. We extend our thoughts to the family and to offer our support when needed.
Our relations with the Police, local Funeral Directors and Businesses continue to evolve. We have been rebranding our HUGS Funeral Pack for the families, that Hereford Police or Funeral Directors give to bereaved families to receive our financial condolence gift. Character By Design has designed a booklet with two inset sheets for families to pass to the undertaker and keep the booklet to help them with the immediate support for arranging their child’s funeral. The Charity Manager will continue to engage with the Police & Funeral Directors once the booklet has been finalised and printed.
The Charity has considered options of funding opportunities to help to sustain our income. An option was to apply for funding from the National Lottery of £15,000 to make memorial artefacts for our bereaved families. Unfortunately, the Charity was not successful in securing such funding. We therefore made the decision to make a small quantity to see if there was a unique market to sell them. We will remain committed to seek external funding to help with management, running costs and to make our metal feathers.
We are extremely grateful to all the businesses that have supported us and individuals who have challenged themselves to fundraise for ELY. Such support and generosity are overwhelming because we were able to hold our ELY Cycle Event, the ELY Charity Golf Day and the Young Drivers’ Experience for this fiscal year. It was our last ELY Cycle Event since we started in 2015, a sad but proud occasion that has seen many great days seeing our cyclists support ELY. We would like to extend our personal thanks to Steve Jay (Trustee) for all his total commitment organising the event with the wonderful support of Balfour Beatty management and Highway Engineers who loyally volunteered their time prior to, on the day and after the event, to keep our cyclists safe whilst cycling. We could never have held the event without them, again, thank you.
The Charities turnover this year has reduced from end July 2022, this is due to less events and limited donations. Even though we have had reduced income, the Charities Reserved Balance will pay up to thirteen funerals of £3000 each and £13,000 for administration fees for the fiscal year 1[st] August 2023 to 31[st] July 2024.
It is essential that the charity supports families through financial and emotional support, ensure we support our fundraising activities and seek funding through organisations to deliver road safety campaigns and deliver a unique driver learning experience for Herefordshire. Our Trustees will keep focused on delivering the Charitable purpose for the public benefit and strive to reduce the statistics of road traffic collisions amongst the age group 17-25 years within Herefordshire.
Finally, I would like to thank the ELY Board of Management for their time during the last 12 months and to all our supporters and bereaved families who continue along ELY’s journey.
Nigel Wood
